Advantages: Easy to find reliable instant coffee.
Disadvantages: Does powder more than it should at the price.
I am a coffee addict. I am also a complete coffee floozy, who is willing to try whatever instant is on offer at my local supermarket. My local supermarket is also a not inexpensive Sainsbury's Local with Waitrose and Marks and Spencers as the other two within grocery carrying distance. So when Gold Blend goes on offer at £5.00 for the 200g jar rather than the usual £6.38, I grab it.
A 200g jar is bit large for the small kitchen cupboard where my hot drinks live but does make refilling it with the 150g refill pack - available at £2.99 for a 150g pouch - a doddle. It is definitely easier than trying to cram it into the £3.34 100g usual size without spilling coffee granules all over the kitchen table.
The glass jar is both recyclable and refillable and the newer sleeker jars than the one shown here are also modern and attractive, if perhaps a little less easily gripped than the old style for those with hand problems.
The coffee itself is the gold standard of standard instant coffees. It is a rich but bright blend that gives plenty of coffee taste and a great aroma. The granules do not mix as well with with either the steaming water or milk as some other quality instants and I find that the resulting does need stirring with a teaspoon when others do not, which is annoying as it adds to the washing up.
I also find this instant's granules do tend to powder more than competing blends. This is not a massive factor, as most of the granules do go intact into the mug, but it does tend to leave my coffee mugs with irritating rings at the coffee-line which distorts the taste and adds to the need to scrub them to get them properly clean.
Because of this, I think this is a great coffee to use in making coffee cake, as the blending process removes the powdering problem and the aroma and taste will make a really great cake.
It is a tasty instant for those not looking for stronger or darker brews. This is very much a mass market quality instant and is blended to provide a tasty, consistent middle of the road not bitter brew which will appeal to the bulk of coffee drinkers - something it does achieve very well.
Because it is so widely available at even smaller local supermarkets let alone the big ones and online, it is an easy to find choice for the shopping basket and the resulting mug. It will make you and yours a tasty caffeine and coffee fix at a not unreasonable price.
But there are better instants available from both Nescafe and the other coffee brands and some cost less and also give better quality and taste.
