Nescafe Original 3 in 1
Advantages: Easy to use - Reasonable price - Highly convenient..
Disadvantages: Not the nicest cuppa I've ever had..
Thankfully, the perfect solution to my caffeine-consuming ritual was found rather easily in a local branch of Poundland some 12 months ago. The apparent perfect companion to my miniature-sized (and much loved) travel kettle presented itself among other foodstuff items available in-store at the time.
Packaged in a brown plastic wrapper with the familiar "Nescafe" branding and logo, the "3-in-1" sachets appeared to be just what I needed! The package contained 7 individual 'pouches' of 'ready-mixed' powdered drink which is a combination of Coffee, sugar and creamer and thus, the 3-in-1 claim of the product and its name is easily fulfilled.
The package contains 7 individual pouches as I mentioned, and so, for my £1 in Poundland I have purchased enough coffee for seven individual cuppas, each pouch providing enough contents to make one cup of coffee. I tend to purchase a couple of the packages for each holiday or trip as my husband will often partake in a hot cuppa too, and these packages always last well for the duration of our holiday. I feel that £1 for 7 sachets of coffee is a reasonable price and offers good value for money, although I think it is worth noting that a similar "3 in 1" pre-mixed coffee drink was recently available from a rival brand (Namely, Maxwell House) alongside it's Nescafe alternative in a local (independent) Pound Shop recently, where TEN sachets were contained in the bag. We actually purchased both, and found very little difference between the two products.... Possibly worth bearing in mind.
The seven pouches each have a little cut in the side that allows the top of the pouch to be ripped off quite easily. I've never experienced any problem with doing this, even though I suffer from limited mobility and weakness in my hands at times. Additionally, I have never really noticed that the powdered contents from the small sachets escapes easily or causes any sort of spill which would no doubt have me complaining about the packaging for the product being inadequate and rather poor.
The powdered contents of each sachet is rather unremarkable in its appearance, I must admit. Comprising of a sort of grey powder with chocolate brown coloured 'flecks' throughout, the powder appears rather dull. A sweet smell is evident as the powder is decanted into a cup or mug, and the aroma of coffee is present too of course, as you would expect.
Adding hot water from the kettle allows the light powder to be completely absorbed very quickly, and stirring the powder into the water is quick and easy to undertake. I find it really only takes a few moments to complete the preparation process and there is nothing overly fussy about it either.. This makes the Nescafe 3-in-1 sachets absolutely ideal for use first thing in the morning when I am not at my brightest, it has to be said. I have found too that stirring the powder for a moment allows for it to be completely dissolved, and I don't recall ever finding clumped remnants of powder lingering at the bottom of my cup after consumption... Rather surprising, if my experience of drinking powdered hot chocolate products is to be compared.
The end result is a hot, steaming mug (or cup) of hot coffee, of course. The 'milk' or creamer added in the product is just enough to allow the Nescafe drink to meet my own requirements, in that it makes the coffee 'white' enough to remove the familiar bitterness that black coffee carries in its body. It has to be said that I do miss the 'cooling' effect achieved when cold milk or cream is added to boiling hot coffee because of course this is not present with the use of the Nescafe powder. I find that leaving my hot cuppa to 'rest' for a few minutes before drinking really goes a long way in terms of finding the drink most suited to my own tastes in terms of the drink's temperature.
The sugar or sweetener element of the product is quite strong in my opinion, and certainly I do not find it necessary to add any additional sugar or sweetener to my drink, even though I would normally add two teaspoons of sugar to a fresh cup of coffee. I do think that if you usually take one or less sugars in your coffee then the Nescafe 3-In-1 may prove to be overly sweet for your palate, but this is down to personal choice of course and it may just be a case of you needing to get used to the taste of the product.
Overall, I find the Nescafe 3-In-1 coffee sachets offer a quick, easy and fuss-free solution to my coffee-drinking habits whilst holidaying abroad. It would not be true to say that the sachets produce the most delicious cup of coffee that I have ever tasted, but it would be unfair, I think, to expect this of such a small sachet of powder and they do their job extremely well in my opinion. The product's strongest selling point is no doubt its convenience and I really think the sachets would be ideal for camping trips as well as days away to the seaside (all you really need is a flask of hot water to make your hot cuppa, remember!) as well as, of course, holidays and trips where no tea or coffee making facilities are provided in your hotel room.
For the reasons outlined in this review, I feel the Nescafe 3-In-1 deserves full marks in the product rating score and they come with my full recommendation. They are a regular addition to my holiday shopping list, being the ideal companion for my trusty Travel Kettle.... Excellent!
