Starbucks Aztlan Mocha Latte
Advantages: delicious, drink on the go or take home and they are versatile
Disadvantages: may be too chocolately and rich for some people
I'm a HUGE Starbucks fan, and I do spend an awful lot in there. I do also try and replicate the drinks at home, because as much as I love Starbucks drinks, I do think that they are overpriced. I quite often buy these Starbucks Discoveries Chocolate Mocha pots if I see them on offer in the supermarket. These are quite small pots, at just 220ml, but I guess that the price does reflect this, they vary between £1.00 - £1.50 depending upon the supermarket and any special offers on at the time.
These are basically just a Starbucks cold chocolate mocha drink, and they say that they are made with Starbucks fairtrade certified espresso roast just like the drinks in the stores. The chocolate mocha is a blend of premium chocolate, bold espresso roast coffee and milk. They do say that they are ultra heat treated which to me is uht milk, I hate uht milk but these do not taste of uht milk at all, so I guess that they are not. You do have to keep these little cartons refrigerated so I guess that they must contain fresh milk. The carton states that they contain semi skimmed milk.
If you want to just have these as a cold chocolate mocha drink to go, then just give the carton a good shake and then use the little straw which it comes with to puncture the foil on the top of the carton and it's ready to drink. They are not too bad as a cold chocolate mocha drink, but personally I find them a little bit too rich and creamy tasting like this. I much prefer to take them home and then pour the carton of chocolate mocha over a glass full of ice, adding about another 100ml of ice cold skimmed milk as well, effectively making an iced chocolate mocha. This way you get a much bigger drink, and I find that they taste much better when diluted with the addition of some ice cold skimmed milk - much less rich and creamy. To be honest when I've diluted these over lots of ice, and added the extra skimmed milk then I think that they taste just like an iced skinny chocolate mocha that you'd actually buy from Starbucks itself.
I also occasionally make these into home made chocolate mocha frappuccinos. To do this I pour the pot of cold chocolate mocha into my blender, along with about another 100ml of skimmed milk, then I add double the quantity of liquid in ice into the blender. Then I blend until the mixture resembles the consistency of a frappuccino. Pour the icey, slushy mix into a glass, top with a generous squirt of whipped cream and a generous drizzle of chocolate syrup, insert a straw, and voila, a homemade chocolate mocha frappuccino. Delicious and a fraction of the price of going to Starbucks and buying yourself one.
There are three different flavoured pots in the Starbucks Discoveries range; this one the Chocolate Mocha, a Caramel Macchiato, and a regular latte. The Chocolate Mocha is definitely my favourite flavour of the three. It's very rich and chocolatey, but not too rich that it's sickly - especially if you add the extra skimmed milk as I do. It doesn't have a sweet chocolate taste, it has a rich chocolate taste, and it tastes like an indulgent treat. I would say that the chocolate taste does overpower the coffee taste somewhat, but I'm a massive chocolate fiend so that's not a problem for me. However if you only wanted a hint of a chocolate taste then these probably wouldn't be for you.
