Tesco Value Coffee
Disadvantages: Weak and bitter
I got over excited last night in Tesco and bought 'Everyday Value' tea and coffee. The 47p price tag for 100g of coffee enticed me. The label said it'd been blended and roasted by experts and I believed them.
The picture above is outdated, the shape is the same but label has the new 'Everyday' cream label with orange and brown tea and coffee things pictured on it. It tells me that it's 'Everyday Value Coffee Granules' and is medium roast strength three- three being out of five. The jar is glass and hasn't got any shape to it, the lid is brown and easy to unscrew. The quality of it all is alright.
Well having opening it and removing the stay fresh foil I gave it a good sniff- I thought to myself this smells nice. I was impressed with it's dark brown granules (uneven in size but still granules rather than powder). I heaped my usual tea-spoon of coffee into a mug, poured on boiling water and added milk to taste, it dissolved quickly. The coffee is dark brown, but watery looking and smells weak. The jar says to add one or two tea-spoons of coffee but to be honest I wouldn't want to add two (ones bad enough).
What it's like:
Taking a first sip didn't taste like anything except hot water but as you swallow it down it leaves a horrible bitter taste in the back of your mouth and throat. I found the need to add sugar, which I never have just to hide the bitterness- it did improve it but not much. I managed the whole mug because it's not quite bad enough to pour away, but I didn't enjoy it. I've just tried some out on my sister she drank it but really didn't like it, she said it was horrible and wouldn't drink it again. No matter how much milk is added it tastes like black coffee to me, it's like coffee essence rather than coffee. You can definitely tell the difference between this and branded coffee.
Would I recommend it- not really. I could probably get used to it and am determined to finish the jar, but won't buy it again. I can't expect anything more for less than 50p.
2 Stars but only because of the price and it's drinkable - just
Summary: This coffee is just about drinkable but weak with a horrible after taste
