The main difference between a written book and a comic/graphic novel is the artwork. The combination of author and artists is essential as the power of the tale comes just as much from the art as from the writing. Batman comics and graphic novels traditionally have excellent combos, such as Year One, where the subtle visual elements are what makes it such as powerful tale. I saw The Bat and The Beast in my local library and the stark black and white cover grabbed my attention.
