Black Orchid is a collaboration between the writer Neil Gaiman, and the artist Dave McKean. This three issue limited series was written prior to the pairs work on the Sandman series. This is one of the most beautiful books I have ever read. McKean's photorealistic pencil work gives the book a truly beautiful image, exploited by the storyline. A simple story, using as it's basis the original Black Orchid, and featuring most of the botanic members of the DC universe, as well as Batman and Lex Luthor, this has, as it's highlights, the blowing away of normal narrative. There is no apocalyptic fight scene, when the villain says that he will kill the captured heroine, he does just that. This is not the greatest story ever, but it is a good read, elevated by beautiful artwork.
