by Jake Speed - written on 13/04/10 (Very useful, 83 readings)
Rating:
The Black Island is the seventh book in the series of Tintin adventures by Belgian writer and illustrator Hergé. The story was first published in the newspaper supplement Le Petit Vingtième in the 1930s and later appeared in a slightly different form in 1943. In the sixties Hergé dispatched his assistant Bob de Moor to Britain - where The Black Island is set for the most part - to take some photographs and provide research and drawings to make the book much more accurate. After de Moor travelled everywhere from Sussex to the Highlands of Scotland and returned with a sketch book, pictures and much research, Hergé updated the artwork and included new details. The sunken wreck of Unicorn is assumed to contain the treasure and priceless diamonds of Red Rackham, a notorious pirate who took over the ship before Sir Francis escaped and sank it with the help of some dynamite. Captain Haddock hires a ship called the Sirius ...

The book begins with accident prone detectives Thomson and Thompson investigating a surge of pick pocket activity in the city - a development that will play a recurring role in the story. The pair bump into Tintin at the Old Street Market and soon discover they've had their wallets stolen too. After the detectives leave to report the latest theft, Tintin does a little browsing and chances upon a model of an old galliard ship that he decides to buy as a present for Captain Haddock. After he buys the model ship though, Tintin is suddenly ...
