BlackIce Defender is a software firewall to help protect your PC from hacking attempts.

It works by watching your connection and monitors any suspisious attempts at gaining entry into your PC.

There are four levels of security ranging from TRUSTING to PARONOID. You can keep logs - which can be used as evidence and you can selectively block the intruders.

The best feature is the AdvIce button. After there has been an attempt of someone hacking or running a probe scanner, you highligh the attack and press the button. You are then taken to the Network ICe website which then gives specific information concerning that particular attack. Not only that it gives advice on what damage could have been done and other tips.

Another good feature is the History window which shows the IP address of the attacker - and nearly all the time the person isp details.
I installed the demo version of BlackIce Defende from http://www.networkice.com about a week ago.

Since installing it I have been notified of about seven hacking attempts on my pc each day.

As my ISP account is dial-up i assumed I was safe from any problems. I took care in disabling file and print sharing and kept a virus program running in background.
As I dial up my isp allocates a new ip number each time - how could a hacker get into my pc in this short time.

THis program is needed for dial up as well as permenant connection.
