I cannot imagine that many people use KaZaA in this day and age, for given the increased use of torrents, and services like Rapidshare and Megaupload, there's just little reason to use a service that is notorious for being rife with viruses and fake files when the alternatives are so much better. Still, it's fair to give the platform context, and back in its time it was a decent service, but in 2010 I can't find a single reason to use it, and frankly you couldn't pay me too.
KaZaA is a very similar sharing protocol to Limewire, and came about after the huge success of MP3 sharing application Napster. KaZaA however allows you to share lots of other files, such as videos, applications, and even small files like Word cocuments, and while this is a good idea, but the platform suffers from poor moderation, and it is absolutely rife with dummy files, viruses, and "fakes."
I won't get into the debate about the legality of file sharing because it has become quite passe by now, but whatever you're using KaZaA to download, it is quite a slog to get a high-quality version. When searching for a popular song, you'll be greeted with hundreds of versions, and if you sort by "most shared", you're more likely to come across a fake that people have failed to delete from their hard drive. Often you'll open the file and it will either be a different song/video, or it will play the song for a few seconds before going all distorted. What's more, for the less-savvy computer users, it may mean that malicious viruses (with the .exe extension) will be re-labelled as MP3s in an attempt to trick the computer illiterate, who when have their computer spoofed, perhaps resulting in important information being stolen.
It shows that you get what you pay for: I pay for a Megaupload subscription and have NEVER had a fake file. KaZaA is a wasteland of dodgy files, meaning you have to sift through the mess to find the real deal. Avoid at all costs, I say.
I was fooled into thinking that use of the Kazaa website might give me access to films that never made it to general release, and to be able to save them. My advisor said it was no problem, and attributed the slow speed of his computer to the fact that he was sharing his files with others. The cd he gave me of the key files needed was rejected by my copy of Macafee, and so I went to the website to download the original file sharing software. It was immediately obvious that things were not as they should be during and after the download. Be warned that Kazaa will hijack your system. Amongst the things it changed were my default internet browser, the list of favourites, the desktop, settings on IE6, attempts to choose its own antivirus software over macafee. settings within Zone Alarm, and that was before I had even run the software. Using the software once was enough for me. After one use, Spybot search and detect indicated that 21 pieces of spyware/adware had been installed on my machine, and I decided to delete the whole shooting match. Even so, I am still left with orphan programmes, and can only assume that as I have been running Macafee the whole time, that no more viruses crept onto the system. Reading other reviews indicates that this is the general nature of things, and that Kazaa makes its money by allowing others to access your computer for things other than you want. Once can only guess that some of the individuals who have reported having their dial up connections hijacked by premium telephone lines may be related to the use of kazaa or similar peer to peer sharing software. I know that it is expensive to buy original copyright material, but at the end of the day, the creators of these copyright materials deserve to be rewarded in some way for their efforts. Anomalously, the creator of Spybot search and destroy seems to be not so concerned, but he/she has created one of the best bits of freely available software that helps
the non-techy user, and I think that anyone who uses the Internet, especially on a broadband connection should have on their machine: an up to date virus pack(some of the good ones are still free) Zone Alarm (free) SpyBot (free but donations accepted) a non-microsoft web browser such as Opera.
If I EVER met a Kazaa developer in person, I CANNOT be held responsible for my reaction!!!!! The amount of spyware Kazaa installs is UNBELIEVABLE!! I am a professional computer programmer/user and it has taken me over a week to get most of the spyware off my system. Some still lingers, and has to be manually removed even after running adaware, McAfee, AND AOL spyware removal. When running Kazaa, I caught new Trojan Horses almost daily, even going to sites like Google. My system found so many search page hijackers, browser modifiers, and adware programmers on my machine, it was UNBELIEVABLE. Not to mention, installation is all but reversable. When you install Kazaa, it puts roughly 20 spyware/adware objects on your machine, and on uninstallation it does not remove any of them! I could understand back in the day when Kazaa would pop up one or two windows every few minutes. That was acceptable. NOW, when I open an internet explorer window, I get 7 or 8 pop ups and pop undersat a time!!!! When I Alt+F4 to quickly close them, more pop up. Periodically, Internet Explorer just stops working altogether until I reboot. PLUS, if you think you can run an adware remover in conjunction with Kazaa, you are mistaken. If Kazaa detects that any of its devious components have been deleted or even quarantined, Kazaa will not open and will prompt you to re-install. My brand new system also has to be rebooted multiple times each day now. My mouse randomly stops working and with all the browser objects it installed, two or three internet explorer windows will eat up most of my system resources. Explorer crashes completely on a frequent basis. YOU WILL ABSOLUTELY REGRET INSTALLING THIS SOFTWARE!!! There are other file sharing apps in the world. MAY HARM BEFALL KAZAA AND ALL OF IT'S DEVELOPERS.
hi kazaa is full of spywere it useing a program call SAVE.EXE and kazaa is just a gatway to hackers its easy for the hackers to get into your pc and that and its full off virus and that they is kazaa lite that does not have spywere but still easy for hackers to get . the best program to download on is BitTorrent just search for that i would give u the website to get it but dont know if i can do that on dooyoo
I will give some brief details of what Kazaa has to offer, but if its an in depth opinion of this program then I am sorry you will have to read other reviews. This is more a case of my personal experience and hopefully a warning to others. Firstly Kazaa is a file-sharing program that enables any two computers that are using this program to share all files on their computers. In other words they can swap anything, software, music (MP3 etc), video, pictures. So if you want something and it is on another PC you can download it. On an average day their are upwards of 2.5 million users online at any given moment. With that in mind the chances of finding what you want is more than a probability. With Kazaa you also get bullguard, which is an anti virus program. I decided to download the free version of Kazaa, I did briefly read all the notices and was aware that I would get pop ups, well I have got used to a certain amount of those. All I wanted was a software program, in fact it was an old freeware program, so using Kazaa seemed the ideal tool to use. Having downloaded the program I searched for the program, to my surprise I never did find it. Still now I have got it I might as well have a look around and see what it can do. Well yes it can and does download from other users, I tried a music file, a picture and a funny video, and they all downloaded and were perfectly ok. With so many users certain adult content type videos can be downloaded, but Kazaa does have a filter and can be password protected to stop children from accessing such things. With Kazaa you also have the choice of what if any files you wish to share with the outside world. So if Kazaa is your type of program so far so good. Now I am one of those people who clutter up their computers with all sorts of stuff
. If I am honest I cannot remember what a lot of the things do. Having said that I do try and keep my pc running as smoothly as possible. Yes I do have anti virus stuff and yes I use it and keep it updated. Having had Kazaa for a few days I noticed that Kazaa itself was not too stable and would often do an illegal activity and shut down (I don’t know what it did, but it kept on doing it and shutting down). Then I was finding my PC would totally freeze on me. I would not be able to connect to the Internet without restarting the PC. A lot of this I blamed on my poor PC housekeeping. That was until I tried to do an Internet search and found I was being given strange results, for instance I wanted some train times and got places where I could buy toy trains. If I was a new user then I would have thought it was the search engine, but I do know a little better than that. A closer look and I realised although I was using the MSN search bar on Internet explorer the results were coming back from a search engine called my shopping. That was not down to me. I tried to reset my settings on the PC, but still I would find my searches hijacked. Things got worse I was soon finding strange programs trying to access the Internet. Pages were taking longer and longer to load although my hard drive seemed to be working its socks off. Now if I had broadband I might not have noticed the slow down, but having a dial up connection that is slow at the best of times I really did notice. Then Internet Explorer became more or less unusable. At this point I started to put two and two together and realised that it must have something to do with Kazaa. In fact the problem is not Kazaa itself, its all the other prog
rams that are bundled with the free version. Add to that the fact that downloading from other computers can also mean you download spyware programs and other programs that are called thiefware. My solution was not that easy to achieve, it involved firstly deleting Kazaa, then downloading a program (I will write an opinion on the program I used) to help me trace all the programs that should not be on my PC, getting rid of them and finally resetting and downloading updates to try and get my PC working as it did prior to my flirtation with Kazaa. So for any of you thinking of using this program do be aware there is no such thing as a free lunch. Kazaa do offer another version without the add on programs, but you have to pay for this. I personally have had too bad a time to consider using it, so I cannot tell you what it is like.
Who doesn?t like free stuff? Every one likes free stuff. I came to know about KAZAA Media Desktop from a friend almost a year ago. This is the best file sharing application you can find on internet. You can download almost everything from songs, porn (just kidding), movies, software almost everything you just name it and you can find it on KAZAA. Where To Get It And How To Install It Basically you can find it from two sources. The first one is download.com. Another very good website for different softwares. Some of these softwares are free and for some you have to pay. The second source to find KAZAA is to go at the website of KAZAA, which is kazaa.com. After you find it the step of installing comes. KAZAA is a bit slow to download the reason for slow installation is that like other installation it is not directly from the website. KAZAA is a peer-to-peer sharing application. That means you share files with other people and other people share their files with you. So that installation process can be fast or slow depending on the person you are sharing file from. But once it gets the file on your computer the normal process starts just follow the instructions click on next again and again and after a few minutes you are done. How To Use KAZAA The very first thing is that you set up a username and password for yourself. And after that it just signs you in. now you are already to use the application. On the top there are different tabs all having different features. You will be using these three tabs: Search, Theater, and Traffic. If you click on the search tab, it will take you to a new page where you can type in what you are looking for and it will find you that. You can select different type of files like if you are looking for an audio song you better click on audio, and if you are something in video click on video, by doing this it targets the search to the desired results. It saves time. In the theater tab, you can play t
he files and in the Traffic tab you can see the progress of the download. Some people say that this application is a spy ware, but you can avoid that too. You can limit the access of other users to your computer. You can limit their access to a particular folder or you can simply stop other users from downloading files from you but you can still download files from other users. What You Should Watch For Once you start using KAZAA, you will find out that there are many idiots who try to mess with you. First of all, check the file name before downloading it. Don?t check the title. People change title. If you don?t check file names you might up with a movie that you didn?t want at first place. Like some search must have a title ?THE HULK? but the file name might be ?spiderman.avi.? You might be looking for The Hulk but when the download completes you are stuck with Spiderman, though a good movie. There is another thing that you look for. Sometime people put viruses in the files just to corrupt your computer. For that you should have a good antivirus. I use Norton antivirus. It automatically detects viruses; of course you have to configure it to check files automatically. Once you have a good antivirus and you check file names before downloading, believe me you will love all the free stuff that you can get from KAZAA.
I have had Kazaa for some time now and recently, my computer was updated and I downloaded KazaaLite. For those of you who know nothing about this program, let me start from the beginning. Kazaa is a peer to peer downloading system. In other words, you have the ability with this software to download onto your own computer any files that are being shared by anyone else that is online at the same time as you. It really is very clever. To start on the download process, you need to go to Kazaa.com and download their desktop, which is a very simple procedure. You have a choice of different kinds, and I chose the KazaaLite because you do not get the same amount of adverts popping up. It is much more stable and I have had a lot less problems with it than the original Kazaa Desktop. When you have downloaded the desktop, you have a screen that shows you the options that you have. There is a search facility and when you press this, you can either enter the name of an artiste that you want to find, or the name of a piece of software you are looking for, even photographs. Say for example you want a good photograph of a forest, type in the word forest and then tick the box for photographs and you will see what is online. When you find what you want right click it and press download and it starts to look for the file you want. In the section market traffic, you can keep track of the things that you are downloading and see what progress they are making. Downloading is notoriously slow on a standard 56K connection like I have, but even so, I can still download a whole album of music in a day whilst I am doing my housework. I like Kazaa very much because I can sample peoples work before I spend money on CDs. I remember when we could go into a record shop and listen to a record before buying it. These days this is not always possible. Maybe in big towns, but certainly not in a small community like I live in, and Kazaa allows me to
listen to a piece of music at my leisure and make up my mind whether I want to buy the album or not. The other advantage that Kazaa has is that I find music I would otherwise never find. I simply type in something obscure like "Indian" music, or "scandinavian music", and Kazaa comes up with the goods, and I can experience artistes that I would never have otherwise heard of. Another advantage with Kazaa is that I can look up music that has shaped my past, records from the sixties, the odd song that reminds me of a time in my life, and 99 per cent of the time, the song is there waiting for me to download it. There are downsides to a site like this. There is little control over downloading viruses and I think that anyone using the site should make their own arrangements for virus protection. I am protected by the latest technology and trust it at the moment, whilst being aware that viruses are getting more and more sophisticated (if that is the right word). I have found images on Kazaa that I use for backgrounds for CD covers, and altogether I am very happy with this program. When you find a person that has the kind of music that you like, you can right click on the track in question on the traffic page and ask to see all the music that this particular user has as well as being able to message him/her. I find this useful and very user friendly. My Kazaalite button shows you all the files that you are sharing and the control is with you. You share what you want to share. There are easy to follow instructions in the tools section and I have found the whole Kazaa experience to be an enriching one. I have just typed in a request to see something that would worry me as a parent, whether things are available to download that would be unwise for children, and I was surprised. There is a section at the top of the download desk called options, and here it would be very wise for parents to set up
the type of files and nature of files that they do not want their children downloading. I was unaware of this until I looked, but thought that many of you out there may want to protect your children. The words I typed into the search just to see what came up was child porn and I was disgusted that there are files available. On the filter section of the options, you can set up a protection against this kind of smut. I just did it and it works thank heavens. You can also set up a protection that is password protected so that your children cannot download offensive things. I use this program for music, although there are people that use it for downloading film on faster connections than mine. Altogether my opinion of Kazaa is positive, although I do understand the artistes that feel they are being cheated by downloaders. I would be perfectly happy to pay a fee if asked to do so, in order that artistes get a share from downloaders, although so far I have not been asked to. Of all the downloading programs that I have tried, I stick with Kazaa because I find it the most user friendly, and the variety of music is amazing, from pop, international, classics, and obscure. It is all there. Good luck and try it out. Rachel
Kazaa is pretty much universal - no one thinks twice about downloading copyright material these days, the RIAA might be hunting down every 12 year old in the States for a slice of their pocket money, but we won't let that stop us right? They can't sue us all! After all, everyone downloads music these days, jump on the band wagon, last one to download the Darkness album is a big pussy. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for ripping off the music industry - they've been doing it to us for years, turn about is fair play - they need to evolve or die. My problem with Kazaa runs a little deeper. You see we all know that Kazaa isn't just about tunes. You can pinch all sorts of stuff over Kazaa; movies, games, porn - you name it you can half-inch it. The trouble is that this kind of nefarious network will always have a darker side. While you're using Kazaa to download that Half Man Half Biscuit album you want on CD, or to sneak a peek at the Jackass movie pre-release someone else is using the same network and the privacy and anonimity it offers for all the wrong reasons. As a result, Kazaa is swimming in child porn. Now my first instinct is to blame Kazaa. They've created this network, they should responsible for policing it right? I read a statement from the head of Sharmann, the company which owns Kazaa the other day to the effect that child porn isn't a peer-to-peer problem, it's an internat problem. He has a point. Kazaa aren't actually responsible for what is done with their software. They have created a program which allows you to take a nose around a limited area of someone else's computer and download anything you like the look of. What you find on someone else's computer has nothing to do with the network you are using to find it. We can't blame Kazaa for child porn on their network any more than we can blame BT if a child is groomed for abuse via text message or telep
hone. Now the fact that this sort of stuff exists on the Kazaa network is bad enough, but more often than not these files are not labelled in any way that would imply their contents. In fact, files are frequently tagged with 'child-friendly' key words, so a child searching Kazaa for Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera is exposed to the risk of seeing these sorts of images. Lets face it, no self respecting paedophile is going to name a file containing child porn ?Kiddie Porn 101?, so when you see a file name while searching for a download it doesn?t necessarily correspond to what that file might contain. Now, as I said, I can't blame Kazaa for this, in the same way that 'Gun's don't kill people, people kill people' they are not responsible, they have simply made the job easier. This is why I've stopped using Kazaa. I can't blame anyone for the child porn on the network but the perverts who have placed it there, but I can distance myself from the process. I appreciate that this is an extreme, knee jerk reaction, but I can't help but feel that ignoring this problem in some ways justifies it. If we all stopped using Kazaa tomorrow there wouldn't be an ever changing network and plenty of background traffic to hide this stuff in. Deleting Kazaa from my PC might not solve the problem, or even make me part of the solution, but at least I'm not ignoring the problem anymore. P.S. If you think you have found child porn on Kazaa report it to the IWF at www.iwf.org.uk or contact the police.
Well I have already written a comment on a previous version of Kazaa but I now feel I am more experienced on the program and update you with some more facts on the latest Kazaa Program. The version I am currently using is called Kazaa Lite K++ version 2.4.2 which is the latest one available. For those who are unfamiliar with Kazaa it is a peer to peer program which makes sharing files easy amongst many users. You can share anything from text documents to Mpeg(movie) files for example and the best part is it doesn't cost you a penny. I have been able to download some really new movies that are still out at the cinema's, for example I have just download Pirates of the Carribean and the image is so clear its like watching a DVD. You can find these movies under the "web" tab once you have downloaded the program from Kazaa's website. Once you have clicked the web tab simply click on kazaalite.host.sk and the files are listed alphabetically. Kazaa lite also has a speedup program which can re-activate paused or files which may not be downloading, this allows you to automatically tell the program to resume downloading all or even pause all if you do so wish. Also on Kazaa is a chat function which allows you to liase with other users of the net from all over the world, you can also turn this feature off to prevent you from recieving any unwanted messages. The search facility on the program is really good, this relies on users inputing keywords for songs or files, for example: say you are looking for Braveheart the movie, all you may have to type in is Mel Gibson, or Scotland, or even just Braveheart itself. This will bring up a list of files people have associated with the film which may have some relevance. Also on the search facility there is pornographic material and some files which may contain virus', you are able to block these by setting up the options located on the menu bar in the progra
m. For anybody who wishes to use this program I would strongly recommend having a virus checker installed, I use Nortons Antivirus which I update daily (when available) and I have not had any problems thankfully. One common virus on Kazaa is a VBS trojan, this deletes ALL MP3(music files) files from your system and will rename them *song title*.VBS the VBS is a program associated with Visual Basic and the MP3's infected are now destroyed beyond repair so if you do notice any VBS files I advise you stay well clear!, if you find any on your system located in the "my shared folder" (this is where Kazaa designates your downloads into) I strongly advise virus checking your system as the virus' is very infectious. Another bit of useful information for anybody who is saying "I dont have an MP3 player..." well that is of no relevance, you can download a program from kazaa lite called MP3 to Wav convertor, you are able to play WAV files on most home stereo systems and even on car stereo systems, some users will have WAV files available but they take up more hard drive space so MP3's are the easiest option. If you are an MP3 user I can recommend using Roxio Easy CD Creator as this will allow you to have over 100 tracks in MP3 format onto a 70 minute CD. If you feel you do not wish to submit any files for sharing you are able to disable this feature located in the options menubar but some users do not appreciate free-loaders so do try and share files when possible, if you wish to see the progress on your files you have for downloading simply click on the "traffic" tab and check the progress. If you are unsatisfied with their progress you can try and resume them by right clicking the mouse on one of the tracks and selecting "resume all" I hope this information is of some use to anybody interested in using Kazaa Lite or any peer to peer program. I also have one quick comment which is
slightly relevent to kazaa, I recently bought myself a car MP3 player and the quality of the tracks I have downloaded are very good. If you are a serious free loader then I can recommend MP3 as the way forward.
Recently thier has been massive pressure over the likes of napster to stop the illeagel spread of music and vedios for free. Such issues are related to liscence and copyright issues. These types of software are under increasing pressure also now to meet to theese levels of strictness and p2p software is under threat. If thier is one piece i dont wnat to see shutdown it is Kazaa. However p2p brings people together in a cybucultre manner. Kazaa is the best p2p file sharing program i have ever seen in my oppinion. With its fantastic online virus scanners, millions of users and high compatibity. If i had to make any crisisam it would be about the spyware involved. Anyway getting back to the posotive it is a fantastic place for sharing leagel freeware / shareware and i hope people dont abuse this beacuse i would hate to see the likes of Kazza go!
When my other half took me to the magical world of kazaa I could hardly contain my excitement. Free records, completely free, and all for me? I had to download something special, something moving, something that meant something to me just to mkae sure it was real. I haven't stopped listening to 'Footloose' by Kenny Loggins for the last two weeks. Kazaa is a fantastic tool and as yet I feel no guilt for failing to buy these cd's. As my other half remarked, it's a good way of hearing a few tracks and deciding whether I like a cd enough to then go and buy it. Or, as I say, it's a good way to make playlists called things like 'eighties great tunes to dance to part one' and 'Now that's what I call music too embarrassing to buy from HMV but brilliant to download in the privacy of my own bedroom' (that title would NEVER fit on the cd cover mind. Easy to do, easy to get addicted to, the only downside is the (lack of ) quality downloads in some cases and regression back to your youth for nights on end. Just remember, the neighbours might not have loved Bros as much as you and do no therefore wish to hear the same track played repeatedly in the early hours of the morning.
KaZaA is a package which you install on to your computer and from this, you can download anything you want from it's sharers-other people who have downloaded it and share files on it. I have had KaZaA for quite a while now and have found it very useful when downloading songs and videos from the it off the internet. Kazaa is completely free! I found this astonishing and amazing, and it is also free to download all files on it. There have been many dodgy roumers about it which i am not sure weather they are true or not, but really I don't care because it has never done anything wrong on my computer and it probably won't. Kazaa itself doesn't take long to download onto your PC unless you have a slow connection, when it still shouldn't take that much longer. It doesn't take up very much space on your PC drive either which is another good thing. There is a wide selection of content to download and a few different options to search under, like all, artist or title when you are looking for a song or a video or anything which is good, and also when you click the traffic button at the top, you will be shown the progress of the files you are downloading and the files people are downloading off your kazaa. I personally find KaZaA really useful because I can download songs from bands I have not heard very much from and consider weather I want to purchase any of their released material. I also like it because I can view videos of pretty much anything! Sometimes it does not have something I want to download when I search for it: this is either because sharers don't have it or it didn't come up in the search results, meaning you can try searching for it again by searching for the artist or finding a song from the same CD and clicking find more from same artist. Kazaa can be used to listen or view the files you have on it when you are offline which I liked and the sound quality of the majority of songs is really
great. At times, files say more sources needed or queued which is rather annoying but they should download later if you leave it for a while. The more items downloading, the longer they take to complete I think, but when they are done, they are almost instantly added to your 'my kazaa' folder so you can use them when ever you want. It is possible to download some games through this programme aswell, though they may use up quite a bit of space on your drive, and you can search the internet by clicking the 'web' icon at the top. 'Theatre' is where you can view videos you have downloaded- some are better quality that others. I don't think there is a limit to the amount of files you can download from sharers so you can keep going until your drive runs out of space if you want! I plan to keep KaZaA for quite a while if I can and ignore any roumers unless they are proved 100% correct because I think it's amazing. Thanks for reading my review and I would recomend to you who don't have this to download it now. Go to www.kazaa.com and find download KaZaA media desktop.
I first saw Kazaa at a friends an instantly knew I had to download it. The first version (v1.72) I downloaded was from the Kazaa official site. I installed it and swept the C drive for adware, as I do for any piece of software. I was shocked at the number of pieces of spyware it had just placed onto the C drive. So I uninstalled the software and searched for a spyware free version. It only took a few mins. Kazaa Lite. Totally adware free and much quicker than the other one. I'm currently running the Kazaa Lite v2.02. Web The first button in Kazaa is for browsing the web. I have never used it, as generally when downloading anything I do not surf the net or run anything else in the background. The new version of Kazaa has cut the annoying loading of the Kazaa homepage out of the web area. This used to slow down the time it took for the program to connect to the net. My Kazaa Lite. This is where all the files downloaded can be accessed from within the application. As the files come in they are divided into categories. All, Audio, Document, Image, Other, Software, Other. These sections can become reather heavy on the ram of the pc. I found that when Kazaa was handling 5gb of files the program became sluggish and resource hungry as it tried to manage all the files. There is also a playlist section to create playlists from the audio and video. The new feature in Kazaa v2 allows these playlists to be shared as files. Once the program has connected to the net, Theater, Search and Traffic become available. Theater Theater is where you can watch mpeg's that are partially downloaded or video files from the hard drive. I would recommend downloading divx 5 from the net though as many of the codec's used by the video's are not common ones that are easily availabe. The theater tends to use up hd space though when viewing a partially downloaded mpeg. The Temporary internet hidden files
can reach gigabits in days if not cleared out. Search Search connects you to the p2p network and finds as many people as possible that have the file you are searching for. I always check the extension of the file I am downloading as there are viruses related to the exe files in kazaa. If quality of a file is important then arrange the searched file by quality and select the highest. But also select a file that has more than one person who has it, as it can take days or months to get a file that only one person has. Kazaa has an average of around 160kbps on audio which is rather poor but its size of file versus quality. I frequently download tv programs of file size 400mb+ and when one of those is unwatchable its a real pain. Often every episode of a series is available on kazaa. For example, friends or charmed. Only a few episodes of each are not available. If you have ever missed an episode of a program this is one of the best places to find it. Traffic Traffic is where you can watch all the downloads you have selected. It can be slow and tedious watching a 400mb file come in on a 56k connection. Kazaa allows you to pause the download and continue when you like. You can also use options to find files like the one selected, or more files from the user you are downloading. Overall the software is brilliant. There is a plentiful supply of files to download from the users of p2p. Most files are good quality. I'd definitely recommend if you have broadband. And if you have dialup, just persevere with the terrible speeds.
I was first introduced to downloadable music, and software necessary, as many were through the Napster website. Sadly (and if you don’t already know where the hell have you been) Napster was obliterated by lawsuits from several of the groups and artists featured on the website. The problem with Napster??? They had all the music files on their own web page, which meant that they were breaking copyright laws, or so the suing artists believed. So what now?? Napster down and millions of songs still to be downloaded. A friend from university firstly introduced me to Grokster, but several attempts at a download were wasted due to the fact that they had problems with their software. But by this point I was on a mission to find new software to download music. Kazaa I found Kazaa through accident, searching for music download software, the links appeared and Kazaa was “free”, I like free stuff!!!! So I took a gander at their homepage. Upon reading their information I found that, unlike Napster’s methods, they used a peer-to-peer network (P2P). This P2P network meant that none of the files were actually online, and they were actually peoples private collections of music, saved to their hard drives on their PC’s, and ‘made’ available to the Internet through the software. So Kazaa had worked around the reasons behind Napsters demise and are in pole position. So I downloaded the software, which didn’t take very long – which also made me happy, and got down to playing with the program to see what it could do. (I first downloaded V1, now it is V2, so I will explain V2) When you open the program, it automatically starts you at their web page (internet connection needed obviously) if you aren’t connected to the internet then u get the default, “the page you are……..” Down the left hand side of the program window are the different sections of the pr
ogram: My Kazaa – My Kazaa holds all of your downloaded and self – added tracks, arrange able by date, name, size etc. Within My Kazaa on the left hand side you have another box with folders: All Files, Music, Software etc. A new part added to the V2 edition is the play list. Underneath the folder sub-section is the play lists area. In this area you can create play lists from the files you have added to your music files, and the files that you have downloaded into the all files folder (automatic). This option is so awesome, as the V1 edition didn’t have it. Almost all my music files have been placed into at least 1 play list, with some of them being included in more than one, i.e. Favorites, Dance, Hip Hop etc. and each of these play lists are found on the left hand side of the My Kazaa screen. Search – The search feature allows you to search the current, online members of Kazaa shared folders, the folders which contain the files that they are willing to share with people, and therefore are available for you to download. You can do a simple search, by simply typing in a word, and any files that contain that word will be pulled up for you in the section of the screen to the right of the search section. To narrow down your search, first click music, then choose from ALL, TITLE and ARTIST, then type the word, your choice obviously depends on what the word directly relates too. If you are still getting too many results click on ‘more search options’ a new box will appear with a variety of different search filters. When looking for songs I usually us the album filter, simply type in the name of the album you would like to view, and then go back to the original search box, and re-type the song or artist title. This is especially handy when searching for artists as some searches will return more than one artist if the name is similar, i.e. Nelly / Nelly Furtardo. Then when you find the music tracks that yo
u would like to download, simply double click them in the search results section, a little green downward pointing arrow will appear and this will tell you that that file is being downloaded. There are no limits to how many songs you can download at any one time, but after you have 3 songs simultaneously downloading, any songs after this are automatically paused, so the 1st three are faster, and automatically begin to download as each previous song is completed. Traffic – The traffic screen shows you which songs you are downloading, and which songs other people are uploading from you. This screen is really handy to see which files have been paused and which files are active downloads, so you can pause and activate them as you like, if you want a song completed before another one, simply pause the one that is downloading, and resume the one that is paused or queued. New Features Other new features include an instant messaging service to other users, for your personal pleasure!!! A participation rating is also included, although I don’t know exactly what it is for, I can make an educated guess. When I am not downloading files, and people are uploading my files, the rating rises, when I am downloading and uploading the rating falls, so my educated guess is ‘the rating serves as a guide to other users at how often people are using your files, the higher the rating, the more or more popular files you have, and more likely the faster upload speed you have’ so there it is, if anyone knows the truth please comment on my opinion so I can change my opinion to contain pure truth!!!
P2P software, I?m sure that the vast majority of you have heard of this before now. Just as likely is the fact that you have used some sort of P2P software, be it Napster, Audiogalaxy or one of the many other variants. In this review I am concentrating on what I believe to be one of the best for downloading Audio, as well as Movies. ABOUT KAZAA ============= Kazaa, or Kazaa Media Desktop to give it its full name is the creation of Sharman Networks. Sharman Networks are a company that is commited to creating P2P software applications. Kazaa is a legitimate application that is often used for illigitimate reasons, it has been blamed by many for allowing people to download pirated material. What is there to download on Kazaa? ========================== Basically anything you care to think of will be shared on the Kazaa network. However, just because the file is shared doesn?t mean you will be able to access and download it. This is due to factors that I will explain further later on in this review. The majority of files on the network are of the dubious legality variety. These include the latest games and applications as well as the latest MP3s and Movies hot off the reels. So this program is just about people pirating products instead of buying them? ======================================================== Well it would be churlish of me to say that the majority of users use this for anything other than illegal means, but there are legitimate reasons. Kazaa can be used as a platform for distributing legal material such as: Shareware, Freeware, Open sourced products and Music by unsigned bands Further to my above explanation, it would seem that Microsoft themselves used Kazaa as a distribution platform according the the official Kazaa site, here is a quote from a Microsoft representative: ?"We're really interested in how peer-to-peer networ
ks can be used for the legitimate distribution of content," said Jonathan Usher, director of Microsoft's Windows Media division. A key question, Usher said, is whether Kazaa users will download an authorized, copy? Precautions to take when using Kazaa =========================== Better to be safe than sorry, so you?ll be needing to get yourself a decent virus checker. Try downloading AVG from www.grisoft.com, this is so that you can check the downloads ? as unfortunately Kazaa is well targetted by viruses. Do not be tempted under any circumstances to download Full version Virus software from Kazaa, as these can quite often be themselves infected (if you think about it, they are prime targets). Oh, and you may wish to take advantage of the filtering capabilities to block out Adult or objectionable content. Myself personally I have no problems with Adult content, however the times I have searched for something totally innocent and non porn related and been confronted with objectionable search results have been many. As a result I have made myself a nice list of filters (these can be applied via a menu in Kazaa). These filters incorporate stuff which I never want to see listed in the search results Window. More about the application =================== Kazaa can come in several different variaties from the bog standard version available from Kazaa.com, to the Kazaa Lite version available from a number of places. I would recommend that users choose Kazaa lite, as not only is it identical in most regards to the version from Kazaa.com, but it also has no spyware. The original Kazaa is well known to be a hotbed of Spyware, the latter versions to their credit have been cleaned up a lot, but I would still steer clear from recommending to you the original version. Kazaa also comes with a fully integrated Virus hecker called Bullguard Lite, I would advise that when you are using
Kazaa that you disable this and instead use your normal Virus checker. This is because I have noticed that Bullguard Lite tends to find Viruses that don?t actually exist.... I am not saying it makes them up, but there seems to be a lot of false positives, make of that what you will. Kazaa lite not only has less dubious content than the original Kazaa, but this modification also comes with a number of useful utilities such as: Sig2Dat ? this can be used to create links to files that someone can click to get a verified correct file, you can find websites full of Sig2Dat links that you simply click and then download should start as soon as the file becomes available AviPreview ? this can be used to discern whether a movie file you are downloading is legitimate or a fake (more on this later) Speedup ? this can be used to automatically search for other versions of the same file at a user set time frame, thereby hopefully ensuring you download speedily all of the time. Kazaalite is not considered 100% legal as such I will not provide the link to it in this review, needless to say a quick Google search often yields wonders. About fakes ========= Guaranteed if you are going to go onto Kazaa and download several files such as a new movie, a new game and a new application the chances are that at least 2 of those will be a fake file. Fake files are usually just other files that have been named differently to trick users to download them. Fake files can be quite sophisticated for example sometimes they will appear to be legitimate until you try watching them, in the case of a Music file you may find that instead of the track playing properly it is just a series of loops of the beginning of the song. It is for this reason it is best to seek out verified Sig2Dats, thus assuring you that you are downloading a legit file. This isn?t foolproof, as certain versions of Sig2Dat have shown to ha
ve a problem whereby links created with a different version of the software cause it to try to download a different file altogether. If you must download an unverified file you can use the preview function of Kazaa to test some of them out ? here are ways to help yourself: If you are downloading unverified software, then consider downloading a few megabytes and then trying to open the file with something like Winrar, or CDMage. If you are lucky you will glimpse some of the individual files for the program, thus giving you an idea of what it is you?re actually downloading. If you are downloading unverified audio, try using the Kazaa preview function to listen to the song as it is downloading ? also keep a sharp ear out for any hisses or clicks that may have been added deliberately or not to the song. If you are downloading unverified video then try using the Kazaa preview function to watch some of the file as it is downloading, you could also use AviPreview which is often able to preview files (.AVI only at the moment) that Kazaa itself can?t. So how does Kazaa work? =================== Kazaa works by allowing people to download the client and then once you have connected you are assigned to a Super Node ? this Node is a server that has many many users present on it. If a Node is down you are simply assigned another Node to go on. This has its problems. By their nature Super Nodes can be shutdown by such groups as the RIAA ? this has not happened yet, but in the near future it looks like it could well do. Other problems with this approach are wide and varied, the most troublesome for the normal user is the fact that 10 people may have the file you are after ? but if all 10 of those people are on different Nodes you will not be able to find the file, nevermind download it. What can be done about this? ===================== There are programs available that help you to change Node
s on Kazaa, Diet Kazaa is one such program. Another thing you can do to change Node is to simply disconnect, and then reconnect (thus hopefully being assigned a different Super Node). For the technical amongst us, you could also block the IP address of the Node you are on using your Firewall ? this will force Kazaa to renogotiate the Node hence placing you onto a non blocked one. Download speeds ============= Download speeds are obviously dependent upon several factors, including the speed of your connection, and how common/rare the file is. If a file seems rare it is often a good idea to start the download and then use the find more sources for file option (right click over the file name in the transfer window) to well, find more sources. Download speed is also dependent on something called the Participation level, the participation level is a good idea in theory (rewarding those who share by giving them priority for downloads). The PL can be raised by uploading more data than you download, however this has been proven time and time again to be easy to hack. As such you could share all day and not download anything, only to be bypassed in the race for a download space by someone who has just cheated themselves the status of Supreme being (1000 PL Max). Sharing files ========= Sharing files is easy, just go to Tools>Find Media to share. It is advised to only share full files, and not any installed files. Also do not share your Windows directory, or the My Documents directory (unless you want people to look and download your personal documents and files). Advantages of Kazaa over other P2P applications =================================== Kazaa seems to have some of the fastest speeds maxing out download capacity regularly Kazaa has a lot of files shared, mainly in the music and video catagories Kazaa is easy to use and supports resumable downloads Disadvantages =
========= The main disadvantages with Kazaa are as follows, corruption and fakes: Corruption is common on downloads from Kazaa. For a movie or audio file this will manifest itself as perhaps a very slight visual or audio defect, but for the vast majority of cases the actual file itself will still be usable. It is a different story however if you are downloading a piece of software, this is because in most cases if something corrupts with a software download then the whole thing will usually become useless. There are ways to repair some corrupted software downloads, for example if it is a CD Image (Bin or ISO for example) then a program called CDMage will scan for, and hopefully fix corrupted sectors, this is not perfect though and in a lot of cases the corruption is too much to fix. Corruption can be made more likely by someone sharing a corrupt file, or by pausing/resuming/disconnecting/reconnecting Kazaa. Fake sharing as touched on earlier is also a big problem with certain companies and film studios being known to pro-actively flood the network with fakes, knowing full too well that there are plenty of gullible people out there that will share these files. Alternatives to Kazaa =============== I would recommend that people seek out Emule/Edonkey2000-Overnet Hybrid as an alternative for Kazaa. On the Edonkey/Overnet network it is often the case that files have increased availability over Kazaa, there also seems to be less fakes (because of a community that is able to spot them easier). The big selling people of the Edonkey network however is that it will spot any corruptions in files and instead of that download being useless, it will simply redownload that small segment from another user ? thus saving you a lot of time redownloading. Emule is simply a modification of Edonkey that amongst other things can compress a download as you are obtaining it ? some files are shared uncomp
ressed and can weigh in at for example 700 megabytes. When compressed these files can sometimes half in size, so it?s a very nice feature. The Edonkey network also has another Advantage over Kazaa, this being the fact that it is extremely hard for people to cheat when using it ? thus ensuring that only those who share will get the rewards over those who don?t. Get Edonkey/Overnet hybrid from here: http://www.edonkey2000.com/ Or Emule from here: http://www.emule-project.net/ If you need download sources for these programs or serverlists then feel free to send me an email asking. I'd be interested to read your comments or questions regarding this review, if I have omitted anything then let me know and I'll do my best to rectify things.
