I decided to use Gravity despite using Outlook Express for near on 3 years. However just because I've used OE for that long doesn't mean I've not tried others I've used the likes of Free Agent and I had tried Gravity before when it was in version 2.3 along with that I had also used Pineapple which is a newsreader available for BeOS. I downloaded the free version of Gravity now available (version 2.5) and installed it without any problems. I was introduced to Gravity with a pop up box which wanted to know my details, SMTP and the news server I wanted to connect to. No problems there and once I had entered the details the program automatically connected to the server. The actual layout of Gravity is not something I really like. The icons looked old and dated and the actual way things were placed on the screen needed changing so I set about it. I found using the icons the options menu and then I was greeted with a very large set of tabs which i had to click on to find everything I needed. This looked very ugly and was not easy to navigate or find everything I wanted. I changed the layout to that I was used to using OE and then tried to change the headers at the top so that the subject title was the first thing I saw. I went back into options to find that it was actually already meant to be set up that way but it just would not move. This meant I was stuck with peoples names instead of the titles which I didn't want. Of course it may have been possible another way but from using other newsreaders in the past surly it should be easier. A quick search of the help files showed me how to get mulitple news servers which was just a case of pressing certain short cut keys. I ended up removing Gravity 1 week after using it simply because it seems to try and make things as confused as possible. I did not enjoy using it and tried hard to avoid actually using the program. Yes it uses standards for
example ,no HTML posting (an option anyway), wraps text correctly and it uses proper .sig seperator, and auto .sig snipping but OE stands in in so many ways more and I could get the usability of OE and the standards of Gravity using Pineapple news. It seems to me people are using this program as they don't like Microsoft not because this is a better product. This really has a lot of work needed before I will move away from OE to use it.

It's just another Newsreader, right? Well, yes, but it's a damned good one. Agent, Free Agent, Outlook Express 5 just don't cut it compared to this - it's got all the features you'd ever need and more. Killfiling, Filtering, Message Scoring, and the level of customisation possible is amazing. It's quick, easy to use, and can be downloaded as a trial from http://www.microplanet.com/ , although this is only a 30-day evaluation copy. The way it handles multiple news servers is good, although it may take a while to get used to, as with the rest of the interface. Product support is excellent as well - the MicroPlanet website has a great FAQ and Customer Support, as well as links to Third-Party support sites. Even if you just try the evaluation copy, I'd still recommend trying it....
