Advantages: Easy to use, free

Disadvantages: Not so good for VOIP calls or webcam chatting.

Where to start really. The instant messaging software has become one of the most used pieces of software around. It is taken for granted by so many and used by people of all ages. From children learning how to use the internet, to grand parents keeping in touch with grand children.

It is easy to use and takes very little getting used to and is free to use to anywhere in the world.

Over its many reincarnations over the years it has evolved and now includes many features that allow you to share files, write on a shared whiteboard or invite many people into one conversation.

There is also the facility for internet calls although there are other packages out there that are better suited to such task such as Skype.

All that is needed to start using it is a valid e-mail address. If you don't have one (it doesn't have to be with hotmail or msn) you can get one for free while registering.

The newest version in my opinion is not as aesthetic as some of the older ones but that may just be me.

Overall, a useful program that does what it intends to do well, and does other stuff adequately.

Summary: Very good at what it does.
