Advantages: Updated regularly, 100's of add-ons & themes. Fast and reliable.
Disadvantages: None.
I have to share on this one! I have been a fan of FF for years now and have followed its development with interest.
A web browser can become one of the defining pieces of software that effects your whole computing experience. I spend a great deal of time on the web so I need a browser that I can configure to do what I want it to do. I need a browser that is stable and fast, in my opinion FF does all this and more.
Despite the release of Internet Explorer 8 and newer versions of Opera, I still find that nothing can compete with FF. You can configure FF in a myriad of different ways, change its appearance with different themes or change how your 'tabs' are managed, for example.
The trick with FF is to download the latest version:
http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/firefox/
and then just play with it.
Surf the web as you normally do and see what add-ons and Extensions you need. Find your Add-ons here:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/
There are numerous plug-ins that you will need to view web content like flash videos (.flv files) and Mpeg / Quicktime files but FF will tell you it needs a plug-in and you just download it from a link it will provide. PDF's are viewed by the Adobe plug-in, it's all sorted.
Downloads can be managed easily because you can specify a specific folder/ location for your downloads.
Certain Add-ons/ Extensions are a must in my opinion. Read the user reviews and the info provided on the add-on and download it and install. Add-ons are easily removed under the 'Tools' tab in your browser window.
So here is my list of some of the top add-ons and why:
Adblock Plus: Stops annoying adds appearing, a must in my book.
British Dictionary: Spell checking! It's spell-checking this review as a type away! Thanks FF!
Download Status Bar: Tells you when that download will arrive, nifty little tool.
Tab Mix Plus: This is an absolute must. It allows you to set up new tabs how you want them to appear. E.g. you can specify anew tab opens at your home page every time.
Tab Scope: allows you to see what is under each tab, by dragging your cursor over the tab.
Torrent Finder Toolbar: IF you use Torrents, this bad boy searches numerous torrent sites from a single search location in your toolbar. Great stuff!
Xmarks: This is another absolute must, Xmarks backs up your Bookmarks to an external server. If you loose or accidentally delete your bookmarks you can log in to get them back. One of the best FF Extensions you will use.
FasterFox: Sppeds up FF. This needs to be treated with a little care, as FF is updated newer versions of these add-ons have to be made and some are released as 'beta's' for testing. So, read the reviews first.
Plug-ins:
Citrix ICA Client - For logging in to external Citrix based accounts.
Shockwave Flash - All your Flash web content needs sorted.
Java - Required for viewing Java based scripts.
Quicktime - View quicktime files.....
I could go on but these are some of my favourites, I'm sure you will find your own. FF is great fun, change it, muck around with it, its a great browser.
Summary: Did I ask, WHY ARE YOU STILL USING IE???

- 26/11/09 Great review. I use Firefox over IE, purely because it's easy to use, simply to understand and everything is laid out where I like it. |
