Sorry guys but here's my opinion about Morpheus 2.0 (after having used KaZaA Lite) INTERFACE + BEFORE YOU PRESS THE ?SEARCH? BUTTON It?s got the looks; yes it?s true. No advanced searches i.e. by artist +keyword or title +album +quality status e.t.a. No file's integrity indicator. No sound quality indicator. AFTER YOU?VE PRESSED THE ?SEARCH? BUTTON: Results with a few files unless you go for the tops-of-the-pops songs or artists. Rarities, older songs, older artists? FORGEDABOUDID! Messy list of results because the files are shown as filenames. It?s very hard to track down what you?re looking for. DOWNLOADING: TOO Looong! "More sources needed" most of the time. ?Illegal operations caused and Morpheus will shut down? while downloading process happens very often. Then you restart Morpheus but "More sources needed". IN GENERAL: Other applications may start / block out of the blue. If you have an Internet Security program, it will go nuts. May block you I.E. Spyware + Adware that?s hard to get rid of. I recommend you get KaZaA Lite.
Use kazaa.com instead - Advantages: the original was very useful file sharing application, easy to try out, lots of users meaning that their is a good chance of finding what you want - Disadvantages: the new version is not much use, kazaa uses the same system to better effect
Morpheus PETM is the new Preview Edition that was released in March 2002. As of writing, Music City (the people behind Morpheus) have announced the imminent release of Morpheus 2.0, but if this version is anything to go by, don't bother! I'm a big fan of Morpheus and have enjoyed using it ever since Napster passed away <sob>. However, the Preview Edition leaves a lot to be desired. OK, the good points first... a) It looks nicer than the old one. b) More search results. Now the bad points... a) It's a lot slower (the transfer rates) than the old version. b) The file transfers break down more often. c) Can't search for specific files (haven't found out how yet, so if anyone knows, please get in touch!). d) It's quite a messy installation procedure, in that it gets rid of your previous version but then hides itself away. I couldn't find it in the Start menu at all. e) Takes longer to connect to the network. There are other, smaller, things that don't quite go in its favour. Overall, I wouldn't recommend that you download Morpheus PETM but wait for version 2.0 instead. Hopefully, a lot of the inconsistencies have been remedied, which will put it back on top of the pile yet again. Fingers crossed!
Morpheus Vs WinMS Is Napster finished are these programs the future. Well before i found out about morpheus, i was using napster to download music from the internet. this was until napster went offline due to its legal problems. Anyway i found out about morpheus through a friend and decided to download it. It was great similar to Napster it had a large selection of Audio files. Plus it has the added facility of being able to exchange software, image, video and document files. It allows you to download as many fils as you look (but the more you download at a time the slower they download) it also allows you to pause your download so that you can go offline and then finish off the download when you go back online again. WinMX is similar to Morpheus, but in my mind it is not as good, i prefer to use morpheus all ways round. I feel that the layout of WinMX's download programe is not of the same quality of that of morpheus and as morpheus have more members than that of WinMX the file selection is better. the main advantage that Morpheus has over WinMX is that it gathers together all the identical files that you are downloading from all the people currently online who have this file in their 'shared file' folder. This means that the more people who have the file you want to download the faster the file actually downloads. This makes popular files fairly quick to download. Any way i recommend either of these Programs to you but, Morpheus wins it for me!
So far, I have read a lot of opinions about Morpheus, just to see what people have said, and most or all have compared it to Napster. At one point I did have Napster, and at the time, it was the best, it ruled, there was no better, but when it was taken away, I had to look for alternatives. I immediately found Aimster and I suddenly noticed how crap Napster was, but when I got rid of Aimster, I came across a little known program called Morpheus, and it was the best ever! I think it is nothing like Napster and should not be compared to it! It downloads MP3's, so people think it's similar to Napster but it's not, it's much better. When I first downloaded Morpheus I looked at it and to tell you the truth, it didn't look that special, but when I started searching and downloading, I saw what the hype was all about. So far, everything I've looked for has been there (unlike Napster!), they download quick and easily, and the best thing is, if you get disconnected, as I do every two hours as I have NTL (but it's free so who cares!) when you reconnect and open Morpheus, it just starts downloading again where it left off. When I had Aimster, you could not listen or watch anything until it had downloaded, another benefit with Morpheus is that you can listen to or watch as much as you've downloaded! The actual file to download is a bit smaller than Aimster and easy to get hold of, unlike Aimster, which, now that it is called Mudster, is impossible to get hold of as it is not free anymore from the official website! Personally I love Morpheus and now that I have a CD ReWriter, will be using it constantly to create loads of albums. I think it is a must have if you regularly download songs as it is one of, or is, the best out there (for free!).
If you do nothing else, download Morpheus free today. I don't know how much I can praise this program. What can I say? Morpheus is the latest peer to peer sharing program that allows users to share files over the internet but by no stretch of the imagination does it stop their. Morpheus also has a built in audio player and movie playing capabilities. You may be wondering why it hasn't been closed down like Napster, basically this is because it is in a country where the laws that disabled Napster are not activate which means that it is great for the consumer. Morpheus has been around for a long time and has already established itself as the king of peer-to-peer programs. Recently it has just gone under new management, but this should not worry you but instead, it should be very exciting news because they have brought a lot of fresh and new ideas to the board. Anyone that previously had an account with Morpheus will now have to agree with the new user agreement in order to use the service, but do not worry, this is just simply a small statement identical to the one you agreed to when you first signed up, it has only been re-established for legal reasons and the new management that has arrived. The new management has already injected funds into the upkeep of Morpheus to keep its position as the consumers' number one stop for everything that they need ranging from audio to movies. Do not misunderstand Morpheus has got fierce competition but each one just falls short of gaining the crown that Morpheus fashions so stylishly. Kazaa is a similar peer-to-peer program and is second only to Morpheus and is also a very useful tool to use if you for some reason can't find something on Morpheus (A very rare occurrence I can assure you). Audio Galaxy has also been up and running for a long time and contains a lot of user. Here you will be able to find practically any song that has ever been made, but this is why it doesn't match up
to Morpheus, because it only specialises in audio, mp3 and wav files but Morpheus specialises in everything. Here at Morpheus you will be able to find anything in the formats below: Images Documents Mp3 - Wav Movie Files Programs Software Games Now this is the important part to remember - The files that you download here are not cheap imitations like some sites have such as songs from unknown bands but instead are mp3 files from real artists albums, big names such as 2Pac ranging to Britney Spears. Everything, the software to is not cheap imitations or things that aren't up to scratch like some of the files available for download at Download CNET but instead are licensed software. For instance it is possible to download Windows XP or 2000, Norton AntiVirus, and remember these are full programs and the range is breath taking. I know, it sounds to good to be true but it is absolutely true, real and amazing. Download the new Championship Manager game for free its as simple as that. Morpheus personally has changed my life completely, and for the best. The design of the program is very neat and efficient, black is the prominent colour, but don't be discouraged, believe it's the most welcoming black you will ever see. Morpheus is only around 5mb and is downloadable for free at their website. When you have downloaded and installed the program simply start it up and then choose what you want to download from the range of millions of things. The speed at which you download things depends entirely on your connection speed to the internet, I mean if you have a 46 k modem which most people have then downloading the average music file will take around 4-5 minutes tops. Of course the higher the users bandwidth or the faster your connection the faster the files will be retrieved. Morpheus also features a pause function in which you can choose to download your pro
duct the next day and stop it now. With this pause function, you do no loose and information but instead just gain convenience and peace of mind. This is just one of the ways that Morpheus is so customize able. At Morpheus there is a real sense of community thus the name for the program - peer to peer. People all over the world are constantly sharing product with each other. It is even possible to send a short message through the program to the user that you are about to download the program from, asking them what the product, file of image is about. In saying this, it is clearly noted when you select a product for download what it is so this feature is only necessary for extra and additional information. The surprising thing is how fats people reply and how fast the message is returned to you despite the millions of people using the program at the same time as you. If someone were to ask what the best thing was on the Internet, then I would definitely have to say that it was Morpheus. I am sorry but I cannot find any faults with it and I hope that this doesn't sound like an advert too much but its true and the greatest thing is that it is absolutely free, so download it today and enjoy saving hundreds and getting whatever you want with Morpheus.
So you've read my MP3 vs MD op and want to download MP3s (like misslook), but you're not sure how, or what the heck you're doing. I'm going to lay out a pretty simple op, not a techie one. What is Morpheus? ----------------- Much of what we download from the internet is based in one of two forms (FTP & HTTP). If you click on a link from a page that you see before you, then it tends to bring a little box asking you if you want to save the file. Surely you must have come across this, if not. I'll guide you through downloading something in a sec. Morpheus is different to the conventional way of downloading something. It's a "File Sharing Program". It's basically a program, which you download, and then run when you're connected to the internet. Once running and connected, you have the option of sharing files with others. Once you've chosen the folders (aka directories) you want to share, you're away. The next step is to download whatever anyone else chooses to share. How do I get a copy of Morpheus? -------------------------------- Point your browser towards: http://streamcast.downloadtech.net/morpheus/Morpheus-b3d-v2.exe Or just head on over to www.download.com and do a search for "Morpheus" annd "Musiccity", you should be able to find it. Found it? Follow the links for downloading. You may need to register with www.download.com, but I've found you can get around this on a 56K modem, simply by dialing in again. It then thinks you're someone else, see? When it asks you where you want to save your file, I usually opt for the Desktop. That way you'll never lose it. If you choose somewhere else, make sure you remember where you saved it! Wait, why can't I get MP3s like this? ------------------------------------- You've now completed the easy way of downloading stuff. Unfortunately,
you can't go downloading MP3s like this, well you could, but sites with stuff that you want tend to bounce up and down like a yoyo. My brother had managed to get some episodes of McGyver, and Friends this way, but the sites were erratically up. In fact, I doubt if they are there anymore. Illegal, see? Installing Morpheus ------------------- Pretty straightforward really. Double click on the file that you just saved, and it will start to prompt you where you want to install it. If you're not fussy, then the default should be OK. There will be a screen where you have the choice of loading Morpheus automatically whenever you start your computer. It's advisable to say no at this juncture by leaving the box unticked. I can't remember when exactly you choose a username and password, but you can make anything up. I think it did ask you your email address, I made this up too. Hope there's nobody with email address firstname.lastname@example.org who's getting junk mail galore! Starting Morpheus ----------------- This should have happened automatically for now, but for next time, you'll see a new icon in your Start Menu. The Program ----------- This divides quite nicely into 5 sections, which consist of buttons (tabs) just below the menus. 1) Start - Well obviously this is where you start. It's basically a browser that calls up the Morpheus Homepage, just to keep you posted on what's happening in the Morpheus world. - Use this page to start (duh!) to search for stuff you want. Type what you're looking for (eg Metallica) and then change the next box from "Everything" to "Audio". You could leave it on the "Everything" option, but then you'd get a list of pictures... videos... and music. Hit enter and... | | | | ---- \../ .\/ 4) Search - This gives you a grand choice of what you c
ould download. There'll be details of the files too; the track length the size the estimated time of download... etc - Flick down the list and choose what you want to download, and hit Download. That simple. When it's done downloading, look in your My Documents folder, the file should be there. - Try and choose files that have a little + sign next to them. This merely tells you that more than one person has the same file. This increases your likelihood of getting the complete file. - Say that person were to stop being on the internet, or shut down their Morpheus, or delete the file. You'd no longer have access to it would you? Hence incomplete file. The early days of P2P (What the heck is P2P? - patience, it's coming) sharing were like this, very annoying. Which then jumps to... | | | | ---- \../ .\/ 5) Traffic - Here you monitor your downloads. If you don't know what you're doing, you can leave all alone. If you're on a slow connection (56K), I'd advise just not bothering to watch this at all. If you're on a fast connection, I'd advise the same as you'll probably get the files before you know it. You can also see what other people are uploading from you. - Things you can do on this screen include controlling which files you want to download over other files. You could have thought of 5 songs and plugged them all in, only to watch them all queue up in the Traffic Screen. There's a "Hold" button to put a halt to downloading and a "Resume" button for the obvious reason. You can cancel the downloads too, if you see that you're not getting the files you want. Wait, what about buttons 2 and 3? 2) My Media - Here you can control what you share and what you don't. By default I think Morpheus goes nosing around your "My Documents" folder and finds everything that it t
hinks is worth sharing. Probably worth Unsharing your senstive stuff. Porn, Top Secret files, naked pictures of yourself... that sort of thing. Oh, and any personal financial or similar documents you might have. - You can also rate files, much the way you do in DooYoo. These ratings then show up on the "Search" screen. Completely optional. I choose not to do, and probably do many others. I can see it's uses though. 3) Theater - Well, it's not really one. MP3s and some other types of video files are what's known sa "streamable". All this means is that you can download a bit, then see what it's like. So if you choose an MP3 and you play it, it gives you a chance to see if it's worth downloading the rest of it. Or if it is the song that you've been hunting out forever. Just right click on the file whilst it's downloading in "Traffic", and select the "Preview" option. What else is in the Menus? -------------------------- You get a chance to play around with the options, choose a username and do all sorts of other things, that you don't necessarily need to go poking around. After all, bet you can't use 10% of Word's functions. What is useful is to control the Traffic option: Tools -> Options -> Traffic Control the number of things you download and other people upload, if at all off of you. 56K users should make the total number of files downloading at once 1-2 and the same for uploads. Broadband users can probably plug in numbers 10x this. Some Techie Bits ---------------- --- Firewalls? --- Don't use one myself, but if you've got one you'll need to configure it in: Tools -> Options -> Firewall --- Security Risk? --- Many people are probably yelling and screaming at this point. These programs ain't safe they say. I can see their point. By logging ont
o the Morpheus network you're allowing people to look at what files you have. Upside is it's only the files that you choose, but they then know your computer address and can start doing funny things (of which I know not). All I'd say is, if you're interested, go do some homework. It's never been a problem for me as all I use it for is the occassional download of songs that I may purchase in the future. --- P2P? --- Point to point sharing. The likes of Napster quickly shut down because all users logged onto a a central server, which held a database of who had what file. Shut down the central server, and you've shut down the whole network. Napster (2 people connected) A <---> Server <---> B What Morpheus does is to cut out the middle man: A <-----------> B Course the picture is much more complicated than this, but people are essentially connected to each other, making this a very difficult network to shut down. --- Morpheus is Clever --- In more than one sense. You remember I told you that you should choose files are shared by more than one user? If you're downloading from someone, and they log off. Morpheus goes and finds another identical copy to download from. Saviour! Days and days of watching WinMX not complete the file you always wanted because some evil person cuts you off at the last second. What it also does is, if there are plenty of copies out there, it will choose the fastest link automatically. AND... it also uses multiple people to get the file you want at the same time, connection speed permitting of course. Clever huh? Lastly, My Impression --------------------- Overall, Morpheus seems pretty easy to use, almost foolproof. It gets files with little hassle, but can clog up your browsing speed if running in the background whilst you surf the net. It may not find those obscure MP3s
that you want, but is reliable at least. It doesn't get the files in the absolute fastest way as it uses some of your connection speed to get the fastest download speed, search for other copies, etc. Which can slow the whole thing down, but it's reliable. Phew, thought I'd never be done! Any questions? Thanks for reading.
Before I review the software, I'd like to say that I have used both Napster and Imesh (www.imesh.com) extensively and I feel that Morpheus does little to add to what Imesh has already had for many many months before Morpheus was even written. However, Morpheus has a larger following so consequently becomes (in the same way as the Betamax/VHS war went) the market leader. Imesh allowed you to download from multiple users...Morpheus does too. Imesh allowed you to search for MP3s, videos, programs, pictures and documents...Morpheus does too. Imesh had a crappy front end link to a website...Morpheus does too. Imesh had an advert displayed all the time...Morpheus does too. I don't like starting reviews on a downer, but this is one which I feel is important to point out. If you have a GPF or other similar crash and a file was downloading you *may* lose that file completely. Similarly, if your computer is turned off or reboots/restarts while a file is downloading, you've *definitely* lost that file completely. Backing up the downloads is also a difficult process but *can* be done with a little practice. Morpheus has many good sides, ignoring the negative one I just described. File searches are fast and always yield results for popular stuff. The advanced search (search options) are also useful but I've never felt a need to use it yet. The messaging part of the service is okay but one thing sorely missed in Morpheus which is in Imesh and was in napster is the buddy lists...ICQ does okay in that respect though, so if I want to chat with a buddy I'll message 'em :-) To recap, Morpheus is Napster and Imesh combined, with a few glitches added and the buddy lists taken away...but with so many users and no central server, I think Morpheus will be the one for me...and everyone else in the know!
Morpheus is a music community, a replacement of Napster but even better I think. Once Napster started going down I didn't have a clue on where to get all the latest and best music from again so I asked a friend and she told me to go onto www.musiccity.com and download this 'Morpheus'. In a short time it was finished and then I opened the set up file and registered onto the community. The list of songs I had on Napster I downloaded but I then realised that it wasn't ust audio files which were able to be downloaded but other things to. Films can be downloaded which is great search and choose the video option type in the film title and then you start downloading the films which are usually done in 2 parts. The only disappointment is if you dont have a fast speed internet connection then you can't download because a 56k modem would take days to download a film. The quality of film is usually really good and it's nice to see all the films free. On videos you can also see exclusive music videos, interviews concerts and things of your favourite artists. Image files can be done on morpheus too. Search for anything celebrities, rainbow pictures anything, dolphins whatever you want and you should find something. The pictures are really small files only something like 30kb some. Software this is where things like samples can be taken from. Once I got this graphics thing from here it was quite good to be able to download. There are little trial things, and windows things, not all work. You can get games from this to but they might not work. Documents are just text files mostly. Audio files, this is great you can hear full albums from this and all the newest songs are here. Not all copies are under the right title but the majority are. The sound is great and every artist old or new has a file on there. If a song doesnt come up by searching the title or artist just say all. For example click all and then type &
#39;Alicia Keys Fallin' and then you would definitely get a file for being specific. The download for morpheus is easy when you find the file you want you click on it and click on traffic along the top then the downloads progress shows up. This is good and it tells the speed, if you restart the computer the download will carry on so it is better than every other thing. Morpheus is definitely great and I recommend anyone that wants music files to get them from here it's quick and also the files will always stay on the computer.
** I NOW BEGIN THIS OPINION WITH A WARNING TO PARENTS! ** ** THIS SITE IS FAST BECOMING NOTHING MORE THAN A MEANS FOR PORNOGRAPHERS TO PEDAL THEIR WARES** ** As a responsible parent, I certainly do not want my children downloading from this site. Too often, seemingly innocent movie titles are nothing more than porn films ** ** You have been warned ** ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Get something for nothing and put someone out of business!! A bold and wild statement, or fact? You decide. No doubt this will be a controversial opinion, there will be those who agree and those who disagree, those who support the principals behind file sharing and those opposed to it. Whatever your stance, approach or outlook sites like Morpheus are here, they have been around for a while and will no doubt be here to stay. As one site is taken down, often after bitter legal battles, another one rises up from the ashes like the Phoenix. Morpheus is another one of the many sites from which you can download virtually anything, movies, music, software, pictures and much more. It is a network of users who are prepared to share files on their computers with others throughout the world. They are also breaking the law too. Quite simply it is theft, pure and simple. A lot of money is invested into the production of movies, music and software and people’s livelihoods depend on it. How do you feel when someone STEALS your opinion from CIOA!, maybe the investment is not the same, but it is your work, yours to distribute, yours to share if you want, for others to use it as they wish certainly puts me into a state of heightened annoyance and sometimes even anger. Many fellow CIAOers feel the same way. Morpheus started life as a gateway for people to share news items, the real truth about what was happening in the world. People were encouraged to share their own vide
o pictures and news reports of current events so often censored by the 'Real Media' or governments. This was the peoples chance to tell the true events as they saw them and to share footage of current affairs and topical issues. Very admirable. Take this quote from their website:- “Have you realized that most of the world's Visual News is filtered, and provided from only a few sources? Many important pictorial as well as audio and video news events are never allowed to reach television or print media. With Morpheus, you can create and share the REAL news as you see it around the world. Never before in history have individuals had an opportunity to record video, audio, and images and then report the news and create stories that relate to world news events... Now not only is this possible, it is happening across the Morpheus User Network. As part of the Morpheus News Network, you can Be the Media and be able to publish your news and stories to a worldwide audience.” For a while it worked, and to an extent it still does; but now it has fast become an outlet for those willing to risk copyright infringement and to pedal pornography as I have warned earlier. Now you can download virtually any movie, music track or piece of software. What is more disturbing is the fact that you can download some pretty vile and disgusting pornography too. It has become another outlet for people too cheap to spend money to obtain goods. You can get just about anything from Morpheus if you are prepared to spend the time downloading it. Seen the latest Harry Potter Movie? No, why not, it's just come out at the cinema. Oh, you don't want to pay to see it, or later buy the video or DVD. Okay, just spend a few hours downloading it from this site and it's yours, free of charge. The same applies to that software program you always wanted but could never afford. It is here for the taking. Again
FREE of charge to you. Some say that the movie and software companies make enough money as it is, so what is it to them if a few people ‘Pirate’ their work. Take this fact about The Harry Potter film. "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone," grossed $31.3 million in its debut night, the highest single-day take ever, according to distributor Warner Bros. -- a sister AOL Time Warner company to CNN.” So what is a few extra bucks, pounds or whatever to them? A loss of revenue, that’s what, revenue = jobs, it effects future production and it does effect the overall economy within the industry itself. Piracy in any shape or form has been around for centuries, and it will be around I would suspect, for evermore. Yes I have used Morpheus, I was intrigued by what it offered, or claimed to offer, yes I have seen movies downloaded from it, call me a hypocrite, I’ve been called worse. I have often managed to find some of my old favourite TV Episodes; that, perhaps is no different to taping off your own TV. But sit back as I did and think what you are doing. Think of the consequences of being prosecuted for copyright infringement. Sure it can be a difficult thing to prove, but the penalties are high. What is more, and far worse though, are those who are profiting through this by the onward sale of pirated products on CD to others. They are the real leaches, making money from someone else’s hard work. We have all, I am sure, at some time or another been guilty of these crimes, the Internet makes it easy. I have thought twice about this now and see it from another perspective to the one I did before. Morpheus’ Policy is that they do not condone piracy; they even give details on how to report it, yet they themselves do nothing to prevent it. Neither, it seems do they do anything to protect our children from the hidden dangers of porn. Ultimately the choice is yours.
Let your conscience be your guide. Just remember this, if you had a product of your own, would you want to lose revenue through its illegal use or for someone else to profit from your hard work. Or, how would you feel if your child downloaded a seemingly innocent film only to view it and find it was nothing more than a graphic and violent SEX FILM !!
Before Napster was shut down I had just joined the world that is file transfering. It was great! I could download any song I wanted and it was free. But soon I descovered it was harder and harder to find particular songs because they had to remove artists who were being stingy. So I got rid of Napster as soon as it went down, like I'm gonna pay for subscription. So I was looking for the next file transfering service. There are many out there but the one that shines out above the rest is clearly Morpheus. The reason I wanted the most popular was because that would mean that it has more members so in turn there would be more chance of finding a particular song. What I love about it is that it doesn't matter what kind of music you're into, it caters for all you could say. At the moment I can't get enough of Matchbox 20 and there is plenty of their songs. What is also good is that there are not only songs that are on their albums but there are also live songs or acoustic versions. This give a wide variety of songs to chose from. One of the few problems is that if you are looking for a song that is by a not very popular artist. This is because not many people like them if they aren't popular so there will be less chance of finding them. Still Morpeus is well worth downlaoding. However if you don't have flat rate internet you may not appresiate the true value of Morpheus as it does take a long time to download each song and if you download several songs at a time it takes longer. But if you do have flat rate this shouldn't be a problem for you. Another advantege of Morpheus is that unlike many file transfer services you don't have to just download music. You can download software, games, vidios, images and documents. So as you see I am in great favour of Morpheus and I beieve that it is good for everyone.
With Napster obsolete (but allegedly on a legal comeback trail - which I doubt will make them as popular again as they were), there has been a numerous amount of file trading applications trying to be the popular, and over time it's Mussicity's Morpheus that has become the premier new player. First of all, unlike Napster (and like a number of other competitors), you're not limited to just trading MP3's and WMA's. You can trade and obtain audio, video, images, documents and software (so pretty much anything). And resultantly porn and illegal software are available too which makes Morpheus either a more prime target for law suits, or less of one as it doesn't particularly hone in or endorse any type of file trading. And they do have a disclaimer on illegal trading which no one takes any notice of. Like Napster, the user interface is simple. There is a web page front end (which does sometimes get irritating when message boxes popup to tell you an ad has loaded to fail - as this is ad supported free software), a built in media player (well, it utilises Windows Media Player 6.4+, so you'll need that installed) and there's an array of menus, windows and buttons. Morpheus is a 2mb download (as of v1.3.3), after which you run the executable to install the software and setup a username and password (which Morpheus will remember). After this you can setup various options, such as uploading and downloading folder paths, parental options and a few other things you can find amongst the menus, and then you're set to go. The software is fast and stable (it'd work on any PC from the last 5yrs - sorry Mac folks), and the only trouble I've had is 1 crash. But it was one hell of a weird one! Like Napster there is a chat facility and you can message fellow traders. The greatest thing about Morpheus though is it's intelligent downloading system. Simply search for a file in
the search box, like a search engine and right click on a available required file to download it. Now, if the other user disconnects or their connection goes slow or whatever, you'll be re-directed to another available version of the file (Morpheus scans matching file properties) from another user and it simply resumes! So you do get your file, there's no cursing at lost downloads and that means you can even download large files in portions! You can also see what files are being offered by one particular user. You can also rate the quality of files to help form a kind of voluntary quality control. The traffic window monitors and maintains uploads and downloads, the My Media window catalogues all Morpheus visible collected files and folders, and the theater window is there to play images and video internally. The bottom right hand corner of Morpheus houses standard player controls for audio and video. There's also features like creation of a playlist. The user interface is sparse, simple, to the point and colourful. Easy to navigate and practical. I have mild irritation with the 'Start' page, but it looks nice despite the web page murder integration. All in all Morpheus is both an apt piece of good software and as the most popular file trading network now you can't really bypass it if you want a higher chance of finding files on the internet - and not just music! Morhpeus has what you want, and it wants what you have! So complete the connection if you haven't already. Internet file trading starts and ends here!
Morpheus uses a peer 2 peer interface to share files with more users than any other file sharing program at this time. A big advantage with morpheus that i have found is that not only mp3's are shared but all different types of software and videos etc. If you have used imesh before you will know that the two are very similar but morpheus is the better for me, not just because of the amount of users but also because of its simplicity and efficiency as well. Like all programs there are faults the main one in this case you can't get everything you want. I long for the days when everyone used the same file sharing program and basically everything was there to download (napster!!). I will continue to use morpheus unless there is a program that becomes more popular because really that is the most important thing. In this case choice of program you use is not a good thing for me. Feel free to write back and argue or support my opinion.

Many programs have been called ‘the new Napster’, but how many of them actually deserve the title? Well I think that this time I really have found one that can live up to the title, truly this one is up to the name. It goes by the name of Morpheus, and I can say that, since Napster that this is up to all the calls and comparisons. Basically, like Napster Morpheus is a file sharing program, that allows you to download files from other people on the network, and others can upload your files to their computers. All the computers act as servers and files can be moved across the network very quickly. To get Morpheus go to the website at www.musiccity.com. The file takes about 5 to 10 minutes download. The installation is very simple, it will do it all by itself once downloaded. The file extracts itself, and creates a shortcut onto the desktop. It also creates a special folder to store all the files you want to share in. Very simple overall. The layout of Morpheus is pretty similar to Napster. There are five links at the top of the page, each going to the different parts. The only three I use are ‘search’, ‘traffic’ and ‘start’, though there are ‘my media’ and ‘theater’ options. Start is a news system, with general updates, and stuff. Search is pretty self explanatory, there are several ways to narrow down the search. You type in a keyword that relates to the files. Every file has a set of keywords. For example a music file may come up for the song title, artist or album title. You can also choose what type of file you wish to search for. Unlike Napster you can share lots of different types of files, including picture, video and text files. Traffic cover all the downloads and uploads that your computer is currently involved in, including the time remaining, file size, user name and so on. My Media is a summary of all the downloads you have completed, and Theater can
view the music and video files you have downloaded. There are several advantages and good points about Morpheus. The file transfer speed is fast, though obviously it will depend on the other computer speed, but generally it is quick. The option to transfer lots of other types of files is nice, though not unique. Morpheus is also built with a continue feature that allows you to log off and resume a download whenever you feel like. You do not need to have to original user you started to download off, you can resume your download off anyone if they have the same file. The selection is great, there are lots of users, and I have never failed to find a file that I wanted to. There are often lots of choices to download from, so you can pick the users to download from. There are also a huge range of software to download off Morpheus. I am not sure how legitimate this is, but if another user has it, you can download it. Full games can be transferred, these are between 100-200 megabytes, but can be downloaded by resuming. It is a pretty good option, I have never actually downloaded a whole game, though I know those that have, and they have no complaints. On the downside there is not a lot to say here. The search could be improved, it is often slow and does not always come back with a totally accurate set of results. There is also the chance that the computer you are trying to connect with has a very slow speed, so your overall speed will suffer. Overall thought there is not a huge amount to say against Morpheus. I say this about just anything on the Internet, but there are risks of using this type of program where files are moved across computers. There are over 500,000 users sharing over 400,000 gigabytes of files. The files are not checked for viruses, so all it takes is one little bad file to screw up your whole computer. If you are to use this, then make sure you have the proper defense, or face the risk. Also there are some sick people out t
here, and some of the content of the files can be less than good family viewing. Some of the files can have disguised keywords, so watch if youngsters are to use this. Overall this is a very good program, and I can fully recommend this. There are going to be many challengers to Napster, but this one I believe is worthy of taking the true title. Hopefully this will not go under with copy write red tape. Until then it is a great source for all those people who are too cheap to buy things!
