The trouble with Netscape and Microsoft browsers is that they are so BORING. Yes, they keep updating them, and the current ones do look better than ever, bit it's still just a slightly different take on the same old template. Tried adding a skin to Microsoft IE? Hideous result! Thank god for Neoplanet from Lycos, a totally different browsing experience altogether. Neoplanet is quick to download and easy to install (address at end of op). Neoplanet offers a choice of 'skins' - i.e. browser designs - and there are literally thousands to choose from, ranging from the pretty standard to the truly beautiful to the downright bizarre. You can import as many skins onto your hard drive as you like, and you can set Neoplanet to run your favourite or to choose a random skin each time it opens. So every time you surf, you can do it through a completely different looking screen. Some of them make great noises too when they're alerting you to e-mail arrivals or saying goodbye when you close them down. Try 'Dark Haunting' - it's really eerie and a clown laughs very sinisterly to grab your attention. I also particularly like 'neobabyclub', a very cute baby who makes very strange noises indeed, and 'tiger tiger' which roars at you to say hello, goodbye, and alert you to incoming emails. The NeoPlanet Browser features a powerful e-mail program that can automatically import your e-mail settings from a variety of other e-mail programs. You have a preview pane for e-mail, customizable filtering, an address book, spell check and more. A great feature is e-mail notification, in which an animated presentation appears in the lower, right-hand corner Infobox. And unlike IE, neoplanet automatically checks all the email addresses you've told it to without trying to dial up other connections. But what of its capabilities? Well, it's as good as IE and Netscape at managing your connectio
n, your e-mail accounts (setting up to import mail from other accounts couldn't be simpler)and your favourites. You can also have special Neoplanet channels down a sidebar which you choose yourself and you can go to with just one click. And there is an integrates search facility along the top of the browser which means that you no longer need to have half your screen taken up with IEs sidebar if you're doing a lot of searching. The only drawabck I've encountered is that the 'skins' act as a barrier to automatic form-fillers such as Gator, so you have to fill in your forms manually. However, Neoplanet tell me they're working on this. I've been using neo planet for almost 2 years now and it has given me no problems system-wise at all. Whenever I'm using a PC with only IE or Netscape, I really miss the bright funkiness and the seamless email of NP. Tech Info: The NeoPlanet Browser is less than 4.0 MB and is fully compatible with Windows 95/98/NT and IE4.0. It is also compatible with Windows 2000/ME and IE 5.5+. It works with all existing Internet connections available from any Internet Service Provider. Download from: http://www.neoplanet.com/site/products/browser/browser_download.html Give it a try and you'll never look back!
Neoplanet - What a cool name! I was pleased to find this so called browser, which in fact is actually a whole new interface for Internet Explorer. (You must have IE installed to use Neoplanet). The reason I was so pleased is for that very reason. I have tried Netscape 4.7, Netscape 6, Opera, and of course Internet Explorer. I like a reliable and functional system (Oh Where did I put my Amiga?)... No browser is perfect, They are all in-compatible with some web pages (Bar Internet Explorer), and when I go online I don't want to be restricted in what sites and pages I visit at all. So, the most compatible browser (and currently most reliable) is Internet Explorer 5.5. Neoplanet simply gives Internet Explorer a new interface, that can use SKINS! And low and behold, it sounds like a new piece of MP3 Software. Neoplanet is good, Stable, has built in email client (simple though), built in Messenger (No, It's another interface for Lycos Chat Messenger), and can be made to look, and sound, very nice indeed. It also has a Channel Bar System, to make your favorities all fancy! But I didn't like this channel Bar as it seemed to slow down and complicate the whole process of working with Favorites. However, It's still Internet Explorer you are browsing the net with... No Better... No Worse. The Choice is yours! I would recommend it over all other alternative browsers I have mentioned above, but that's only because I prefer Internet Explorer. But if you think Internet Explorer is boring and you want a fancy new browser without losing any compatibility, then I recommend whole-heartedly that you use Neoplanet. If, however, you prefer the "Don't fix what aint broke" approach to your system, as do I, then there is no real reason to get Neoplanet at all. Overall, Nice Software... But a bit like a full body kit for a Morris Minor, It looks great but do you really need it?
I actually came accross this browser by accident, as a result of some bug which messed up the settings on my Internet Explorer - I needed a new browser, and, having tried Netscape Communicator which kept crashing, I decided to chance it and install this unheard-of NeoPlanet browser. Well, it has now completely changed my idea of a browser - before I saw it as just something necessary for the internet to function, a rather boring looking gery frame to whatever page I was looking at. But now, with all the skins - and there are litteraly thousands - I am spending more time looking at the browser than the loading pages!! The skins remind me of mp3 players suchn as WinAmp and Sonique - you can set it on random and every time you start your browser a new skin will load (thought if you have multiple windows open then they all have to be the same skin - a shame). So far it has only crashed once, which is good. I am a bit confused as to how it can function while my IE is faulty, as in the specifications it said you had to have IE installed; also I was pleased to see that, unlike with Netscape, all my favourites from IE had been copied into NeoPlanet. Well, here's to celebrating modern technology with wacky skins!
Neoplanet is a web browser supposedly. What is actually appears to be is a method for skinning Internet Explorer 4 (and higher) – although it does not run on non-Windows versions of this software. Now on version 5.2, it has improved slightly over previous versions. It does “add” to the features of IE though with integrated email, messenger service and download manager, although I cannot be sure, they seem to be “skinned” versions of Microsoft software. Skins are downloadable from the Neoplanet site, and tend to be around a few hundred K, so would be quite quick downloads (unless you’re using tin cans and string) The download manager allows you to organise your downloads by type, resume interrupted downloads or even schedule downloads while you’re not at your computer. It’s easy to use and boasts some powerful features. The in built e-mail client looks and feels like a skinned Outlook Express, and as such has all the advantages and disadvantages of that particular piece of software. Neoplanet also has it’s own profile manager so that different people who use it can have their own preferences loaded automatically when they launch the program by simply selecting their own profile. All of the different aspect and options dealing with Neoplanet are dealt with through its’ own Control Panel. Like the windows control panel, this enables you to customise Neoplanet to your tastes and needs. For those users who still have Windows 95, Neoplanet has a modem booster (not needed with Win98 which automatically sets the optimal internet settings) which supposedly speeds up your browsing experience by interpreting the information you download more efficiently than normal, although I have to say that on my computer (before I upgraded to Win98), I never noticed any speed increase, and in fact, made the system more unstable. Installation was, as with most modern so
ftware, painless. Like the newer Netscape 6.0 – you first download a “small” file (about 3.5MB for version 5.2) and then you can select to download the various extra parts if you wish. I found Neoplanet to be quite useful, although with the advent of Internet Explorer 5.5 (which Neoplanet is compatible with) I do prefer to use the bog standard browser, and my e-mail client of choice (Outlook 2000).
I've only been using it in the last couple of days, but Neoplanet's totally free web browser downloads are exceptional. Not only can you download any of the several hundred existing skins to give your existing browser a totally new look, feel, and sound, but you can also design your own using Neoplanet's on-line/downloadable manual, and pre-set elements to slot straight into Photoshop. I don't know much about that myself and am not a photoshop user...but I know people who live for that sort of thing so there must be more of you out there! The download skins are only a few hundred K each so they are pretty quick to capture even with a slowish modem speed. Perhaps the best thing though, is a noticeable increase in the speed that pages load, especially through the favourites menu. You only have to click one button to import all your existing favourites to the new browser, but there are many pre-set pages under all the usual categories as well. Oh, and there are also options which allow you to disable those annoying pop-up ads that plague many pages on the web these days...a Godsend!
The Hotbot browser offered by Neoplanet is a free and easy download (www.hotbot.com for details) and offers superb browsing speed, reliability, and one of the nicest features is the ability to download 'skins' to change the appearance of your browser on just about any theme!!! I find this browser is one of the best available, and has just as many features as Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator....with the added bonus of being faster!! It comes with all the usual features you would expect including facility to import email, various search engines, a selection of channels, Flyswat...and much more! Get this one today, you will not be disappointed!!!
