Advantages: Looks good, slick

Disadvantages: eats up memory on older machines

Netscape 6 is a greedy creature and it will eat up your memory in huge chunks. It's not quite as bad as Netscape 4.7 was,( or so I thought.)

I have previously tried Netscape 4.7 and decided to give this new version a try. It was included on a cover disc so I had nothing to lose.

If you need to download it though it is a small download and it installs files directly through your modem. Once installed this looks really slick and modern.

I was quite impressed until I actually started to use the new version. The differences are minimal and most of them seem to be cosmetic.

Then the problems started, everytime I asked my browser to do anything it crashed on me. The whole pc slowed right down and was taking ages to open web pages. I concluded from this that although Netscape 6 took less memory to download it uses more than version 4.7 while it runs.

If you have an older pc you will probably have the same problem. This version is made to be used with win98 and above and you need lots of memory available. My system runs on win95a and has two gigabytes of memory. There isn't much installed on the hard drive but it still can't cope with Netscape 6. (I recently upgraded to win98 but still can't run Netscape 6.)

If you have an older pc and limited memory don't bother trying this out. If you install it you will find it very hard to go back from that installation to a previous one (Netscape doesn't seem to allow you to install an older version over the top). Removing every single file from the new version so that you can go back is really hard as there are files all over the place.

If you don't have an up-to-date pc think twice about installing this beast.
