A brief look at the dooyoo Community and Member functions

Community & Members overview

1. What is an 'About Me' text? How do I create one?

The 'About Me' text allows a member to write a brief text so other members can learn a bit about them. To display an 'About Me' text, go to 'My Account' and select 'My Details' from the menu on the left of the screen and fill out the 'About Me' field. Once you have written your text, tick the 'Display' checkbox to the right of the text box and click the 'Save' button at the bottom of the page. There may be a delay in your text appearing on the site.

2. What is my Circle of Friends? How do I add and remove people from it?

dooyoo members can add other members to their Circle of Friends to show who they trust. You need to be logged in to use this member's only feature.

To add a member to your Circle of Friends, go to their profile (you can find a member using Member Search or by clicking on their username or picture when reading a review) and click on the "Add to my Circle of Friends" link in the left hand column under their member picture. The member will be immediately added to your Circle of Friends and the link will then update to "Remove from my Circle of Friends" so you can remove them if desired.

You can view all members in your Circle of Friends by going to 'My Account' and selecting 'Circle of Friends' from the left hand menu.

3. How do I get to the Community Area? Why is it worth checking out?

You can access the Community Area by clicking on the 'Community' link at the top right of the site in the navigation menu, or via the link that appears under the dooyoo member logo in (at the right of the screen) your account.

The Community Area contains all information about the dooyoo Community and keeps both members and non-members up-to-date with everything dooyoo. dooyoo recommends you check the Community Area every time you login so you are always aware of...

  • What we are working on - ideas, updates, technical problems etc.
  • Competitions - announcements and winners
  • New members to welcome onboard
  • Top Writers and Reviews
  • New Reviews
  • Community Guides
  • dooyooMagazine

Welcome New Members

Previously at dooyoo a new member had to write a review to appear on the site. Now with Welcome New Members you can see the newest members in a list format. If the new member has filled in the About Me text in the 'My Details' section of their account, you will be able to see this along with their member picture and joining date.

Writers and Reviews

Ever wondered which member has written the most reviews on dooyoo or who has received the most Crowns? The Writers and Reviews section is a collection of lists that rank members' contributions. Each list contains at least 25 members to a page and can be sorted by category and/or date by selecting a preference from the drop-down menu. When there are more than 25 members listed, you can navigate through multiple pages by clicking on the page numbers (top right of the list).

Newest Reviews

This is, predictably, a list of the most recent reviews posted on dooyoo; you can sort by the last 30, 60 or 90 days and in all categories. This feature is particularly helpful if you are interested in viewing new reviews in a specific category. The list contains 50 reviews to a page. When there are more than 50 reviews listed, you can navigate through multiple pages by clicking on the page numbers at the top right of the list.

4. Who are the dooyoo Guides? What do they do?

dooyoo Guides are skilled reviewers who are involved in all aspects of the dooyoo community. They are experts in their categories and provide advice to new members, helping them to understand how dooyoo works and how to write the most helpful reviews possible.

What do the dooyoo Guides do?

Their experience means they understand the structure of dooyoo and help us to monitor the site and to shape it by making suggestions. They read reviews, recommend Crowns and alert dooyoo to potential abuse/fraud.

How do I find out who the dooyoo Guides are?

You can view a list of dooyoo Guides in the Community Area - Your Community Guides. They are friendly folk - why not drop them a line?

How do I become a dooyoo Guide?

To be a good dooyoo Guide you will need to:

  • show that you rate reviews fairly and consistently
  • have a passion for helping others
  • understand how dooyoo works
  • try to read all the reviews in your chosen category
  • be prepared to volunteer your time and energy
  • have written a good number of reviews with many awarded Crowns.

If you are interested in being considered as a dooyoo Guide and believe you have the time and enthusiasm necessary, contact the dooyooTeam. Tell us why you would like to be a Guide and which categories you would be best suited to - we're always happy to hear from you.

6. How do I subscribe to the monthly dooyooMagazine?

dooyooMagazine is our in-house email publication that is free to all members. Read about the latest dooyoo news, reviews and products. We will keep you up to date on outstanding reviews, interesting members and new products. Inform yourself about the monthly competition and get to know which review has been chosen 'Review of the Month.

To subscribe, go to 'My Account' and under 'My Details' you will see the section at the bottom of the page called 'dooyooMagazine Options'. Select your preferred format - HTML or Text and hit the 'Save' button at the bottom at the bottom right of the screen.

7. What are Email Alerts? How do I set one up?

This handy, customisable function allows you (if you're a dooyoo member) to set up an 'Email Alert' that will be emailed to your designated email address to remind you when another member:

  • rates one of your reviews.
  • comments on one of your reviews.
  • adds you to their Circle of Friends.
  • sends you a message, or
  • writes a new review.

You can choose which of the above you would like to be alerted for, and even which reviewers you're interested in. Email Alerts are sent once a day so you will not end up being bombarded with emails.

To customise your Email Alerts, make sure you are logged in and go to your account page by clicking the 'My Account' link at the top right of the screen. Select the 'Email Alerts' option from the menu on the left of your 'My dooyoo' page. You can activate or deactivate alerts by clicking the appropriate option next to the Email Alert category and hitting the 'Save' button at the bottom of the page when you are finished.

If there's a reviewer that you particularly enjoy reading, you can set an Email Alert to let you know whenever that member posts a new review. To add a reviewer to your list just visit the reviewer's profile page (you can use the member search feature in the top right navigation bar or simply click on their image while reading a review) and click the 'Alert me when member submits a review' link. You'll notice the message then updates to 'Do not alert me...', so that you can remove them from your list at any time. Then in the 'Email Alerts' section of your 'My dooyoo' page you can select for which reviewers on your list you would like to be alerted.

8. I need to find a member on dooyoo. How do I use the Member Search?

Need to find a member on dooyoo? You can do so by visiting the Community Area and selecting the Member Search menu option from the left hand menu: fill in the 'Who are you looking for' field and click the 'search' button. A list of the closest matches will be displayed. If a member has filled out the 'About Me' text in the 'My Details' section of their account you will be able to view this also. It's never been easier to find who you're looking for!

9. How do I add a picture to my profile? What is my 'dooyoo Gallery'?

Adding a profile picture is a great way to attract people to your reviews. It makes you easily identifiable on the site.

To upload a member picture so other members can identify you, go to the 'My Details' section of your account page - you can access this by clicking the 'My Account' link at the top right of the screen. In the right hand column of your 'My Details' page you will find step-by-step instructions on how to upload or delete a member picture and how to add more pictures to your 'dooyoo Gallery'. Your 'dooyoo Gallery' allows you to store images that are visible when another member views your profile.

There are also plenty of online photo editing sites to ensure you have the best member picture possible - http://snipshot.com/ is easy to use. Making your member 90px x 120px will ensure that there is no grey edge showing.

10. How do I send a private message to another member?

To send a message to another member, go to their profile (you can do this be either searching the member using the 'Member Search' function, or simply clicking on their name or picture when reading a review) and click on the "Send message to member" link in the left hand column under their member picture. A pop-up window will appear with a text box for you to write your message in. These messages are private and cannot be viewed by other members.

You can view messages sent to you by other dooyoo members via the 'Messaging' link in your account or by clicking on the 'Messages' icon in the navigation menu.

You can reply or delete messages in your Inbox the same as with your regular email account. Clicking on the Outbox tab will allow you to see messages that you have sent.

If there is a member who you don't want to receive messages from, you can opt to 'block' them. Blocking a member means that their messages are deleted from your Inbox and that you will not receive further messages from them unless you decide to 'unblock' them. Unblocking a member will not return deleted messages to your inbox. To block a member, click the red "block" icon next to the message they sent you. To unblock a member, go to the 'View Blocked' tab on the right side of your messaging page and click the corresponding 'unblock' link.

11. Can I refer my friends to dooyoo?

Yes, please do!

My Invitations is a member feature that allows you to easily and quickly send invitations to join the dooyooCommunity to all your friends. We work on the principle of 'the more the merrier', so we're happy to offer you dooyooMiles rewards when your friends become members of dooyoo through your invitation.

It's very simple to use. Just go to your My Invitations page in your account (you need to be logged in to use this feature), fill in your friends' email addresses and send. You can also change the pre-populated text in the message if you like. Your friends will then receive an invitation by email containing a link that they must click on in order for us to track their registration back to you and give you your rewards.

You enjoy being a part of dooyoo so why not share that with your friends? Bringing your friends onto the site also means that there are more opportunities for social interaction - making the site even more enjoyable for you. What else is in it for you? We want to reward you for telling your friends about dooyoo, so we'll give you a bonus 500 dooyooMiles every time someone you invited to the site joins and writes at least one Premium Review. They must join by clicking on the link in the invitation email for us to be able to track their registration. Quality is always rewarded on dooyoo, so we'll also give you an additional 500 dooyooMiles if your friend writes a Crowned Review!

For us to be able to pay you your bonus dooyooMiles, your friend must register by clicking on the link in the invitation email within 14 days from when you sent the invitation, and then write their first Premium Review within 14 days of the date that they register. There is no time limit for the bonus you'll receive when your friend writes a Crowned Review though.
