“ Tasty Ketchup. Full of flavour. „
I am a big fan of tomato ketchup. In my opinion it is THE best sauce, but occasionaly, I do branch out and try something different for a change. My second favourite sauce is BBQ.
BBQ sauce has to be just right, hitting that contrast between sweetness and smokiness at just the right point. It needs to compliment the food without overpowering it, but at the smae time needs to stand up on its own. That's what I need in a good BBQ sauce.
Asda do an own brand BBQ ketchup for a mere £1 for a 360g bottle. The sauce comes in a clear plastic bottle and you can see the sauce inside, which is a chocolate brown colour. The flip lid is on the bottom of the bottle, making the sauce easier to squirt. There is a picture on the front of the bottle of a piece of meat cooking in the flames of a barbecue. There is a bright green box stating that the product contains no artificial colours, flavours or hydrogenated fat, and that the product is suitable for vegetarians. The sauce is described as "sweet and smoky".
The sauce is easy to squeeze out of the bottle and the cap is not messy and does not clog, like many ketchup bottles. It is easy to dispense the right amount onto your food. The sauce looks a lot lighter in colour when it comes out of the bottle, and is a paler reddish brown.
The first flavour that hits you when you taste the sauce is tomato. It is the main base flavour, and one of the main ingredients in the sauce is tomato puree. For a second, it tastes like regular tomato ketchup, but then your mouth is flooded with secondary flavours, firstly sweetness, then a mild spiciness, before finishing off on a smoky note. The sauce is a nice consistency, not too thick or thin, similar to regular ketchup.
The product must be refrigerated once opened and consumed within a month. There is an allergy warning on the bottle that the product may contain traces of nuts and seeds. I am not going to drone on about the nutritional information, as the bottle only states the values per 100g, and who put 100g of sauce on their burger???
The product does contain the dreaded Glucose-Fructose syrup, but the amout you consume will only be small, hopefully. The flavout in the sauce comes from tomatoes, molasses, red wine vinegar and apricot puree, which sounds odd but actually tastes really nice.
Asda BBQ ketchup is a great accompaniment for meaty dishes, especially a nice mixed grill. I also love dipping my chips into it. While it won't replace tomato ketchup on the top of my sauce chart, it does rate a respectable second place!
I do like the odd dollop of Condiment with my Chips, Burgers etc, and came across this the other day while up the Sauce Aisle. Since I tend to buy larger bottles of Sauce and i'm the only one in the house that eat the stuff, then it normally lasts a while, so I kind of don't notice certain Sauces that quick!
I used to say that if it was Tomato Ketchup, then it had to be Heinz, if it was brown sauce it had to be Daddies and if it was Mayo it had to be Hellmans, but I never had a yardstick for BBQ sauce, and I have to say this Asda brand one is pretty good.
This is in a plastic bottle, which is always more practical than a glass bottle. It is a 360g bottle and cost me 76p. The label on this is a label stuck on the front, which has a picture of a large drop of this sauce on a nice looking Burger and it states this is Sweet and Smokey. On the back it has how to use this, and the nutritional information.
There is a lovely Sweet BBQ scent comes out when you squirt this onto your item. It is quite thick the sauce, but not too thick that you would think this is really sickly. The colour is a dark brown and just smells great. The taste is good as well. You do get the Smokey taste of BBQ and I think this tastes like a lot stronger taste then BBQ Pringles. It is rich, slightly malty, has a tangy tomato undertone and all the flavours just work well together.
I know some people think that Sauces should just be Red or Brown sauce, but you should try this. It gives a nice twist to a Burger if nothing else and is at a decent price.
I am a really saucy bird! I buy lots of different sauces and litter my foods with them but my very favourite sauce is BBQ. I get through a couple of bottles a week and because of this occasionally when my Mother does the family shop she tries to buy cheaper versions of my usual Colmans or Reggae Reggae sauce! Usually it's a disaster as I don't think anything competes with leading brands, but the price. However this one came into my home last week and of course being the curious type I tried it!
Clear plastic bottle with a black flip top lid to the bottom of it concealing a small hole. On the front label there is a photograph of what appears to be a steak on a grill and I'm told in black, brown and white writing that it's Asda BBQ Ketchup 'Sweet & smoky' and that it contains no artificial colours, flavours or hydrogenated fat, the size is stated (360g) and I'm told it is suitable for Vegetarians. On the back label I'm told it is a sweet and smoky flavour tomato sauce, ingredients are listed as is allergy advice, nutritional information is given as is storage advice, contact details for Asda are given and finally there is bar-code on there. It's s nice, simple to use bottle.
The Sauce Itself....
Excellent! I really like it and will definitely buy it (or be bought it again lol). It's a dark, shiny, glossy brown in colour with a rich smell of tomatoes to it and it squeezes out of the bottle really easily. It is wet of course but it isn't watery and what is good about this is that it doesn't melt as such when near or on hot foods!
Slightly sticky, this to me has a sharp, sour and fresh taste of tomatoes to it that is really smoked and very naturally sweet! It's sharp tasting but thoroughly delicious and totally smooth! You can of course use this any way you choose to , me I simply use this as a dip for my food but you could I'm sure use this as a marinade too! This is great value, tastes great and natural and is just an all round brilliant saucy delight!
