Postman Pat Deluxe Pencaster Playset
by Mama-Q So as my title suggests I got this play set for part of my son's Christmas. He is 2, going on 3, and is quite obsessed with Postman Pat - he'll even say, 'hiya Postman Pat!' whenever we collect parcels from the postman at our door. So when B&M had a 10% off sale very close to Christmas and I spotted this play set I knew I had to get ... it :). It was priced at £10 in B&M which is very reasonable given that Amazon are asking £26.48 for it. With the 10% off it cost me £9 so even more of a bargain. I'm glad I bought it when I did as I can't imagine paying almost 30 quid for this! I was further disappointed to learn the set didn't include Postman Pat's trademark red van :(. The packaging was very misleading as to this and it wasn't 100% clear that it didn't include the van - which costs £15+ alone! It does come with a parking space for the van, which is odd, but it's obviously a ploy to get you to buy all the add-ons ;). I think there is a helicopter add-on, too, but I will not be buying this if I'm going to fork out £15 for the blooming van! The no-van issue aside this is a great play set that my son loves. There are also quite a decent amount of accessories that come along with the set; Postman Pat, Mrs Goggins (the Scottish postmistress of Greendale) and Ben Taylor (General Manager of the Pencaster Sorting Office), three plastic parcels, a parcel trolley, computer desk, two red chairs and a sorting desk. The play set is split into three separate scenes and this is where the '3-in-1' description comes from. There is the Greendale Post Office where Mrs Goggins works, the SDS Sorting Office where the parcels are sorted - and can be moved along on a conveyor belt, which is operated by twisting a - for want of a better word - knob on the back of the set. I've read varied opinions on using this but so far so good with us, it runs smoothly and is easy to twist and operate. My son can also use it quite easily :). The '3' part of the set is the Pencaster Square where Postman Pat's van is parked and ready to deliver parcels. My son mixes and matches different characters and scenes so I'm not sure the 3-in-1 thing works for him quite yet ;). The highlights of the set are the sorting desk where Mrs Goggins is posed beside on the box as the scales 'work' (though they don't measure or weigh the parcels) for the sake of pretend play and the conveyor belt that works - with the parcels sliding down the sorting slides and into the sorting trolley. Overall I'd give the set a 4/5 because of the missing van - and the cost of a van. It's a great set but not worth nearly £30, it would be worth trying to pick one up second hand on eBay or looking out for sales where you might be able to buy it as the varying accessories you can buy for this set are expensive (the van is about £15 and the helicopter probably isn't too far behind on price) and I just don't feel it's worth paying almost £30 for when there are superior Postman Pat toys on the market that would be worth forking out for. Practically I like being able to fold up the set as it looks less messy in my living room and it means it can be carried from room to room if my son wanted it in his room to play with. I'm happy with the money I've spent on the set and my son plays with it a lot so its thumbs up all round, just bear the other things I've said. Read the complete review |

Fun Years Tool Case
by xmum2threex **The set ** My son is at the stage where he wants to copy anything we do, so when he saw his dad putting together some furniture he decided he wanted some tools of his own. In this set you receive a number of tool related items all in the perfect size for little one to hold. They are a great size for any toddlers and you can ... see it is aimed at the younger children with bright colours. Included in the set is a hammer, screw driver, socket wrench, saw, spanner and some screws. The pieces come in a lovely see through case which can be used as storage for all the different bits. This is very handy for making sure the set stays together, but my children also like playing with this separately. I was really happy with the quality of the items. I did think because they cost less than £10 they may not be all that great. On opening them I found they were actually really solid toys. They are made of plastic which is very thick and durable. They have lasted well without any problems at all, with each piece of the set receiving a fair amount of play. They resemble real tools very well so they can be used in the same way just without the danger. There is a great selection of choice with all the main well known tools included, and we find it works well with my sons handy many bench. **In use** These tools are perfect for role play and imagination. Although they are very simple toys this was actually one of my sons favourite birthday presents. As there are a number of pieces all resembling adult tools very well there is lots of choice for little one. The wrench has a movable part on it but other than that they are just moulded pieces of plastic. The box the toys come in is not just used to store this set once they have finished playing. My children use it as a toy itself, as it opens very easily they like to collect just about anything inside. It closes very easily too, and as it has a see through front my children love looking to see what is inside. Sometimes they will pull the tools out of the box without playing with them, and spend hours playing with the case. The tools themselves are great; they are perfect for small hands to hold perfectly. Although they are made from thick plastic they are extremely light meaning they can be carried around very easily. The handles all have small grips on them so they can be held easily. They are surprisingly sturdy, of course as they are tools they get bashed a lot against anything my son is trying to fix. They have lasted extremely well, and everything in the set is still used apart from the screws. The screws are just too small and so they end up at the bottom of the toy box even with a case to store them in. My son likes to try to find anything to fix even if it is not broken. He walks around the house randomly tapping things with his hammer just to make sure it is all stable. He uses the spanner to try and tighten chairs, tables or anything that may need a little adjustment. He really does love his tool set, and carries them around in his backpack just in case anything needs fixing. If anything breaks he runs straight over to his tools to offer to help me, and he also uses them to copy bob the builder when he is watching that. We find them to be a great help at distracting our son while my husband was trying to put his presents together. Rather than trying to steal his daddy's tools he was very happy to sit next to him using his own tools so it was a great distraction. All of my children play with this set, and although the age recommendation is three years plus we just removed the screws. They were the only small part in the set so my two year old son was able to play with the rest without any problem. **Summary** We paid around £8 from this set on eBay which I think was a fair price for the amount of play we have received for them. I was a little worried that the cheap price would mean they were flimsy, but we found them to actually be fantastic quality. My son absolutely loves his set, and he does use it every single day. All of my children love using it, not just my youngest son so it can be used for a wide age range. This is a great product and a great price so I would highly recommend them. Bob The Builder Deluxe Surf Shack Playset with Road Track
by xmum2threex While shopping for my youngest son's birthday in May we came across this set in Tesco for £2. My son is not a huge bob the builder fan, but as my eldest son already had a lot of the accessories which he enjoyed playing with we thought it was worth a shot at that price. We are now very pleased with our purchase, and it has certainly ... earned its money's worth in the last few months. **The set** In the box you receive a number of pieces Surf Shack, Road track, 3 figures Bob, Brad & Wendy, Surf Board, 2x Cement Bags and 1x Boulder. There is also a medium sized scoop toy included with this pack. This all fits together to build a medium sized play set, and only takes minutes to put together. Inside the shack are stickers which detail a number of things from surf boards, to flippers and a clock. It has a door that opens and closes for characters to pass through. We did find it was a little bit of a tight squeeze for the characters to move through the doorway, but as the back is open this provides a larger space for little one to play with. This set is fantastic for forming a base of play where little one can use their imagination to make up different situations. Although my children mainly use this set with bob the builder accessories my sons also like to use their cars to drive over the roadway so it can be used with other ranges of toys too. My children like to use this set with all their other bob the builder accessories, however it could very easily be used by itself. The surf shack is bright in colour, mixing a number of different colours together nicely. According to my children it looks just like the one of the program. The characters are also well detailed resembling the characters from the show well. The movable parts mean little one can use them a little more than those without any. Scoop is another favourite in this set it is identical to the one we purchased separately for £6! **In play** The set comes in one piece all apart from the road which needs to be put together in an oval shape. Then the shack sits on side of this, the scoop toy can be used on or off the road, and the surf shack has two windows that need to be put into place along with a roof panel. My children did not care for building the surf shack up at all which is a shame. We found they were just too difficult for them to do, and once they had added them once they became bored with it. When they fell out again they gave up as we found this difficult to do the first time they were not interested. They are now sitting at the bottom of a toy box somewhere along with the other smaller pieces we received in this set. There is also a panel from the roof missing, this was another piece to be added to the set for little one to use, but as it kept falling back out it sits at the bottom of our toy box. The characters are great they are posable with moving arms and legs. You have bob and Wendy who are very well known to any bob the builder fan, but it also includes Brad Rad who is the owner of the surf shack. In all honesty I did not have a clue who he was, but my children recognised him straight away so he must have been featured in the TV show too. What my children liked is that he had a surf board attached to his hand they found this fun and quirky so it was definitely good for this character to be included. We found that the road fits together fairly easily, the first time it was a little tricky, but now even my two year old son knows how to place it all together. The road was probably the most loved part of this set for us. It is nice and wide meaning that all the bob accessories we own from other sets can be used with it not just scoop. Also my sons found it great for racing their Disney cars around. The road is nice and large both in width and length meaning it gives a great area for play. We find most of our sons cars fit on this track with ease apart from the larger shake and go Disney cars they are too large for it. While in use it does not fall apart or move unless you pick the road up. It is nice and stable yet comes a part into pieces to provide easy storage. The cement bags and boulder were great at first my children loved using scoop to pick them up and make deliveries. They also like to pretend Roley is flattening the road for them along with many other stories with other characters we own from previous sets. Scoop is a great the perfect size for little hands to hold while still being large enough to be interesting. His wheels move both on the road and on other surfaces as it has fully movable wheels. He also has a moving scoop at the front so he can pick the pieces up from the set easily. There are many different ways my children like playing with this bob the builder set. You can use the characters to relax in the surf shack, or get them to fix it back together. The open back design means they have plenty of space to play or they can use it for just decoration purposes. Scoop can be driven along the road making deliveries along the way. The rest of the set is really well made mostly made out of durable plastic. The main body of the surf shack, the road and the characters are the last pieces remaining of this set that actually get used. The smaller pieces get lost too easily but are forgettable anyway. My children do get a lot of use out of this set, but only for short periods at a time. It is recommended from three years plus which I think is correct because of the smaller pieces in this set, although my two year old son does also use the main body without any problems at all. **Summary** We paid £2 for our set which for the size of toy you receive is fantastic. We were lucky enough to find it in the Tesco sale for this price but looking on line I see that it is now £8. It is also available at Amazon for around £10 which I still think is a fantastic price considering scoop can cost £6 alone never mind the other products you receive in this set. My children do love this set, I find that all three of my children enjoy playing with it. They are five three and two so it does cover a fair age range. Most of the set is durable, and the pieces that are too small meaning they get lost are forgettable anyway. Every piece in this set can be used individually or as part of this set so it is not limited in play options. It is great for encouraging small motor skills as the shack needs fixing up but to be honest this was never a feature my children enjoyed. They prefer to use it for imaginative purposes for which it does a very good job. Read the complete review |
