My son forgot about it for a while but now has had some real enjoyment playing with this one

My son was really keen to get his hands on some of the kreo transformer sets which seemed to be all the rage last Christmas but as I wasn't sure how good they would be having no previous experience of the range I decided to purchase a couple of the smaller sets rather than one large one. I bought him the optimus prime set and the bumblebee set and I will review the optimus prime one today.

The set which I bought was one of the smaller sets available in the range but it still cost me around £7.50 when I bought it last Christmas. Having quickly checked amazon for a current price I can advise that you can purchase it for £7.36 at the minute should you be interested. Kreo sets are made by Hasbro and so they are made by a trusted manufacturer in the world of toys as far as I am concerned.

The set comes in a small cardboard box which features a picture of optimus prime both in his robot form but also in his truck form too as this set is a two in one set which will allow you to build the transformer as either form. You are told on the box that this set contains ninety pieces and that it is suitable for children ages six years plus which I do think it probably an accurate guideline as my son was able to tackle building and dismantling this particular kit independently for the most part.

Inside the box there was a small booklet which featured coloured illustrations and instructions on how to build both the robot and the truck forms of optimus prime. All of the pieces were in a plastic bag inside the box which was easily opened and once open I could see that it was similar to the parts found in the Lego hero factory range and felt this was certainly a similar sort of project to that.

My son opted to build the robot form first and he worked through the steps with relative ease. I would say that the instructions were clear and well presented and so they didn't pose any problems for my son in terms of him following them. An issue he did encounter though was the fact that parts would just pop off the robot as he was building it and once it was built after around half an hour or so it was basically unplayable with because of parts popping off here and there! The toy was shoved in a drawer in his toy chest for a good while until up until recently when he decided to dismantle the robot and have a go at building the truck version of the transformer. The truck version of the transformer took a similar amount of time to build as the robot but I have to say my son was much happier with the truck version as it did seem more stable and so he was able to play with it on the floor and he even went on to change his bumblebee transformer in to car form as well so he could play with them both together.

Whilst the kreo bricks are loose and not built in to either form I do think it is important to store all of the bricks together be it in the box or if you have thrown the box away like I did then a sandwich bag works well to store the pieces and the instruction manual safely. Obviously if you lose some pieces this toy is basically ruined and not all of the pieces are used for either the robot or the vehicle form and so you do need to keep them safe really for subsequent use.

Had you asked me just after Christmas what I thought of this toy I would have probably said it was a bit rubbish as my son soon became fed up with the falling off pieces and shoved it in a drawer but over the past couple of months he has revisited playing with the set and has had a lot more play out of it that I thought he initially would. The sets aren't big at all and they probably are a little over priced for the size of thing you end up with but I would say that all construction toys like this seem to have quite a high price tag and so I have come to expect it really. I know my son would be happy to receive other transformers in the range this coming Christmas and so for that reason I have to say I would recommend it.

Thank you for reading my review!
