Mega Bloks Blok Town Garage
Advantages: Easy to set up, large age range, imaginative play, no sharp edges, easy slot together pieces.
Disadvantages: It is a little expensive for what it is.
My son received this Mega Blocks set for his third birthday and we have only just passed it on to a friends little boy as my son now loves that blasted lego that is small and is so easy to stand on and so deceptive looking even though your foot throbs for days after standing on one. Anyway as this was a gift I'm not sure exactly of the price but it seems to be around the £10 mark and postage and packing on top, I think overall it is a little expensive for what it is but really here you are paying for the brand which is very largely recognised so it's not too bad a price really and it does make a lovely gift.
The box is nice and bright and definitely enticing to young children, the front of the box displays the toy set up ready for play and makes it very easy to piece together the various parts into something that is similar to the image on the box. There are also instructions within the box for an adult to piece together perfectly for young children however by the time my son received this he was of an age that he was able to build the garage and shop front pretty easily by himself, I have seen his younger friends also make a pretty good attempt at making the garage and they seem to do ok as well which I think in part is down to the fact that the pieces are large and it is easy to work out which pieces go where.
There are 43 pieces within the box of blocks however included within this is 2 large base pieces, a tower type thing, columns, a shop front, a truck, a stack of tyres and a man, there are other regular looking square and rectangular blocks some of which you have to apply stickers that come provided within the box, once these are on they are fairly durable, my son had had this set a year and none of the stickers were ripped or tatty looking despite regular play which I think is really good. There is the suggested way but of course there are plenty of other ways this set can be connected and my son has set this up multiple ways when he played with it which I think is really good for letting children use their imagination.
The bricks are a good chunky size but not so huge they make huge structures yet neither so tiny that young children may choke on the small pieces, my friends 1 year old regularly played with this set when he was over and although he couldn't put the pieces together he enjoyed the bright colours and the size was perfect for him to hold in his little hands. The colours have never faded on the bricks and neither have any of them become misshapen even though they have been subject to some rough and tough play on many occasions which is one of the reasons I really like Megablocks as they are very durable for all ages.
My son enjoyed creatively playing with this engaging the little man in all sorts of scenarios from taking the car to the garage to going for a drive to going to the shops to do some shopping. He has various other lego sets and so the smaller cars made an appearance at the garage to be fixed and sent on there way. Although my son could have got more play out of this set I think he was at the point he was loosing interest and it only seemed to be brung out when friends were over however this is no fault of the toy and rather my sons interests moving elsewhere, he was no longer challenged by building this set and I do think the 3 year old recommended age is a little old, I passed this on to a friend who has a one year old and although he isn't able to effectively use the set for the purpose yet it won't be long before he is able to build and play with the set and I would therefore say I would be more than happy to let children from around 18 months plus play with this as there are no sharp edges or any problems with the set itself. I do like that this does have a large age range and therefore is a long lasting toy that can be played with lots over the time period.
Overall I do think this set is excellent, it is up to the high standards that all megablocks toys are, there are no leaking or fading colours, no sharp edges, easy click together pieces, easy to set up together, lots of ways to play, it ignites imaginative play either individually or within a group and for that I think I can give it no less than 4 stars, I do think it is a little expensive for what it is but it's not ridiculous.
