Stickle Bricks Junior Super Builder Bucket
Advantages: hard wearing, easy for toddlers to build with, encourages creative building
Disadvantages: none really
I used to have stickle brick myself when I was a young child which I remember playing with a lot with my siblings, so when I had kids myself, I was keen my kids got to experience it too.
My eldest son was bought this official bucket of stickle brick round about his 2nd birthday and this was around the minimum age that this is recommended for.
This Junior Super Builder set is really quite a good set for providing everything a child needs to make some little models to play with. You get a base plate you can build a house on, short and long flat rectangular pieces, squares with a hole in the middle to be windows, solid squares, circles and triangles, and to make people there is one cube shaped piece, and two people's heads in this set. There are also a couple of sets of wheels on an axle piece which allows you to build cars where the wheels will actually turn.
The set might initially seem quite expensive. I have to say, I am sure this was only £20 a few years ago, but is now on amazon at over £30, so its worth looking around. Our set was from The Entertainer. You can get imitation sets far cheaper, which we have a couple of similar sized buckets to this set. However, when you compare the bricks, they might look quite similar in size and colour, but the imitation ones are really floppy and you can bend them, whereas these ones are very tough and rigid and it leads to a much more satisfying building experience for the kids.
My children really like building, and own many varieties of lego and bricks, however, they still come back to this set. The pieces stick together very easily so from a very young age they have been able to make models that look like what they are trying to make. They have a preference for the more male items like cars and guns, but we have made houses as well. The models mostly stay together well until the kids decide to take them apart again.
The container the sticklebricks come in is also pretty useful for storing all the bricks in when not in use. The lid fits very securely, but at the same time, little ones can take it off independently when they want to play with the toy. I have found this is a great toy to take with us when we are visiting grandparents or friends, and my two will willingly tidy the bricks back into the box. This is good as they can hurt if you stand on them with no shoes on.
The bricks are quite hardwearing. I find they do sometimes get a bit grubby but it is easy to wash them. When the kids were younger, if they did go in their mouths, it didn't seem to do much damage to the bricks. If the dog gets hold of them he makes quite short work of them though.
We have had a lot of fun with this set of bricks. The design may not have changed at all from me being a child, but it is still a lot of fun and something that has a lot of play value. The kids like the freedom they get from this set. It is a bit less prescriptive for them than the lego sets we have bought them. It may cost a lot, but if looked after it could even be around for your grandkids.
Summary: A toy that will still be popular in many years time.
