Optrex Dry Eye Drops
by lights84
I never had a problem with dry eyes before I became pregnant. In fact, I used to wear contact lenses on a daily basis, and was always able to put them in and remove them with ease. A few times I fell asleep with them in and upon waking a few blinks would moisten them so I wouldn't even need to take them out again.
So it came ... as a huge surprise to me when I became pregnant and my eyes started to feel dry and sometimes itchy. I thought this was just a normal pregnancy thing until I started eye pain from the dryness. A quick trip to Specsavers confirmed that my eyes were too dry and needed extra support, without which they might become damaged from the excessive dryness.
I stopped wearing my contact lenses for a while and too extra care to stay hydrated, and started using normal eye drops. After a while my eyes improved so I switched back to contact lenses, as I hate wearing glasses.. They give me a headache and I can never seem to keep them clean enough. But when I started again with the contact lenses I found that the eye dryness returned, and that was when my Optometrist recommended these Optrex drops for use with contact lenses.
The Optrex Dry Eyes Drops come in a small white plastic container which is squeezed to drop the clear solution directly into your eye. This is easy enough to do but I will say that the size of the container annoys me sometimes - I often lose it in my bag or even in the house because it is so small. The drops feel cooling when dropped into the eye and you only need 1 or 2 drops per eye each time. I found this sufficient enough to make wearing my contact lenses comfortable, so much so that a few times when I have forgotten to use them in the past I have been surprised by the discomfort my eyes experience.
My Optometrist has told me that it's not uncommon for women to experience eye dryness during and after pregnancy, however my daughter is almost 2 years old now and I still get dry eyes from time to time. So I always keep this bottle on me, in case I feel the need to use it. If I have an alcoholic drink or two when I am out or have had the central heating on full blast at home then I have to use the drops once or twice a day. Otherwise just a few times a week suffices to keep my eyes from drying out.
I have no doubt that these drops work at swiftly rehydrating dry eyes, whether caused by pregnancy or working at a computer for long periods of time. The bottle states that they are not suitable for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding but I used them throughout on advice from my Optometrist, who said the risk posed by the solution is small and significantly less than me losing my sight! As excessive dryness eyes can wear away your eyes and help the early onset of sight degenerative diseases.
So, although this solution costs me £4.50 per container from Boots, it's worth the cost to keep my eyes in shape and also I get points to spend in store so things could be worse. I give the Optrex drops 4 stars though because when I have had dire need of these drops I have not always been able to find them - Optrex please make a bigger container to house them in!!
