As somebody who suffers from extremely dry eyes, my optician recommended Lacri Lube to try and combat the problem.
This comes in a tiny tube and looks as though it would not last 5 minutes however looks can be deceiving and I find that one tube of Lacri Lube will easily last me for a month. I apply this product to my eyes last thing before I go to sleep. It is a very thick gel and I apply it under my bottom eyelid then immediately shut my eyes to keep it in. It has the consistency of melted Vaseline so can be a bit messy if you miss your eye. If you open your eyes after putting this in, you will find that your vision is blurred for a while however this is normal as the gel is coating the eye and getting to work.
I have been using this for many months now and find that when I waken up, my eyes are refreshed and comfortable instead of dry and irritated like they were before.
The first thing to mention about Lacri-Lube is that the packaging has changed since Dooyoo's image was added, it is now available in a very plain pink and white box but under the same name and by the same manufacturer. If you wish to use it you would need to ask a pharmacist for it and possibly answer a few questions about the eye problems you're experiencing as its stored behind the counter.
Lacri-lube is an eye ointment used to treat very dry eyes and after eye surgery or injuries, it lubricates the surface of the eye without making your eyes water! It doesn't come in drop form like most products for the eyes but is a small tube of clear gel. You apply it by pulling down your lower eyelid and squeezing a line of ointment onto the inside of it, just under your actual eye. Be careful not to touch your eye with the metal nozzle in order to prevent infection.
I used this product after a bad eye injury where I damaged my cornea, the doctor I saw at the hospital recommended I use it for six months after the injury, every night before bed to help my eyes heal and to stop my eyelids sticking to my cornea while I was asleep at night. I have to say its very effective, as when my eyes were feeling a bit dry and sore this really soothed them and on the few occasions when I forgot to apply the ointment I found that when I woke up the next morning my eyes felt scratchy and painful. Lacri-lube has no odour and has a slightly oily feel to it. I didn't experience any side effects but the leaflet states that you shouldn't use this product if you are allergic to lanolin alcohols.
There are a couple of downsides to this product. Unfortunately its one of those tubes where the product starts squeezing out as soon as you take the lid off and just doesn't stop, you know the type I mean! This lasted until about halfway through the tube and was definitely irritating, although not as irritating as the eye pain would have been had I not used this product! The other annoyance is that, after applying it your eyes your vision will be blurry for about 5-10 minutes, not that terrible but something to be aware of.
This product is good value for money, as one tube lasts me about four months, treating one eye every night. I would say that, if your eyes are painful enough that you need to use this product and there hasn't been an obvious cause, you should consult at least the pharmacist and maybe your doctor just in case there's something serious wrong or something more that can be done to help.
