Advantages: 2 60ml bottles each lasts a week, 2 cases, zip-lock liquids bag
Disadvantages: the cost
I wear contact lenses most of the time, and as such I get through a fair amount of contact lens cleaning solution. I've worn contact lenses since I was in my teens (I'm in my 30's now), and so I've had years of experience with both the lenses and the solutions. I wear both the monthly disposable contact lenses and the daily disposable contact lenses, I wear the monthly lenses most of the time, and I use the daily lenses for travelling.
I travel a lot with work and have just recently been away for a few days on a work related trip. The trip was arranged at the last minute and I'd completely ran out of daily disposable lenses and so I had to take my normal monthly lenses with me, which then caused me a problem as the cleaning solution that I use comes in 250ml bottles and the maximum limit on liquids in your hand luggage is 100ml. I nipped to Boots in my lunch hour the day before I left to see if I could get a small bottle of cleaning solution suitable to travel with.
I used to always use the Bausch & Lomb Renu solution (before swapping to the Sainsburys All-In-One solution), and so I got really lucky in Boots when I spotted this Special Flight Pack of the Bausch & Lomb Renu. This flight pack box set contains two 60ml bottles of Renu, two contact lens cases, and a brilliant little zip-lock bag suitable for carrying all your liquids through security at the airport. It was quite expensive at £5.35, especially when you consider that you only actually get 120ml of solution, and I buy 250ml of the Sainsburys solution for just £4.00. But they were on a 'buy one get one half price' offer, and so I picked up two packs as I figure that they will come in handy.
I was away for 4 days and I used around half of the 60ml bottle of Renu, so I would easily get a week out of one of the bottles. If you needed a two week supply of contact lens solution then you could just take both bottles. I like that they've packaged this as two 60ml bottles as it gives you more flexibility for holidays as each bottle seems to be a good weeks worth of solution.
The Renu solution is really easy to use, and you use it just like all of the other all-in-one solutions on the market; first of all wash your hands, then remove each lens in turn, place the lens in the palm of your hand and pop a few drops of the Renu solution onto the lens, gently rub each side of the lens with the pad of your finger taking care not to damage or nick the lens, rinse the solution off with either saline or a bit more of the Renu solution and then place the lens in the correct side of your contact lens case, which you've filled up with more of the Renu solution, repeat for the other lens, leave to soak for at least 4 hours or overnight, your lenses are then clean and ready to wear in the morning.
You can put your lenses in straight from the solution in the morning, but I normally find that more often than not contact lens solutions can make my eyes sting a little bit when I do this. I solve this problem by just giving each lens a quick rinse with saline before I put it in, this then makes the lenses instantly comfortable when I put them in. I have found that Renu seems to be the mildest contact lens solution that I've used, and it seems to be the one that I get the least irritation with. It is marketed for sensitive eyes, and so I guess that's why it feels so mild. Although it is quite a gentle solution I do find that it keeps my lenses perfectly clean and clear, and it continues to do so for the life of the contact lens i.e. a month.
The travel sized solutions come in little plastic squeezy bottles, you just remove the lid and squeeze the bottle to dispense the solution; a gentle squeeze will dispense a small amount of solution to use to rub your lens clean, and a hard squeeze will dispense a steady jet of solution to fill your contact lens case. The plastic bottles are see through which I like as normally contact lens solution comes in opaque bottles, I like being able to see how much I've used and how much I have left. The contact lens cases that you get in the pack are the regular Renu lens cases, flat cases as opposed to barrel cases, I much prefer flat cases as I always manage to nick a piece out of the edge of a contact lens in a barrel case.
Although I will always choose to travel with my daily disposable contacts lenses for the convenience, if I ever find myself in the position where I need to take my monthly disposable lenses then I will definitely purchase this little flight pack again. I'd definitely recommend this little pack for anyone that wears contact lenses and needs solutions for their holiday.
