A great cleaning and conditioning system for RGP lenses

As I have an eye condition called Keratoconus I am unable to wear glasses or soft contact lenses to correct my vision so for the last 2 years I have been wearing rigid gas-permeable (RGP) contact lenses to help stabilise my vision. As the RGP lenses have to be cleaned and left in conditioning fluid every day and the lenses themselves kept indefinitely it was essential to find a good cleaning system for my lenses. Bausch and Lomb Boston Advance Cleaner and Conditioner was the brand recommended by my consultant as the best on the market to maintain my lenses and I can't disagree with this.

The cleaner comes in a smaller 30ml bottle but as you only need a few drops per lens to efficiently clean the lens and remove protein and lipid build up from it the bottle lasts me for at least 3 months. The conditioning solution comes in a 120ml bottle and is used for storing your lenses in overnight, giving them a quick soak or re-wetting during the day and the bottle lasts me around 2 months as you do not use more than 2mls a day. The conditioning solution is designed to bind and coat the surface of the lens to help on insertion and enhance wettability throughout the day. The Boston conditioning solution also helps reduce friction against both the cornea and the eyelids which is a huge deal for me as the lens wearer as RGP lenses are rigid, hard plastic and in general not very comfy to wear unlike soft lenses. The longest you can wear RGP lenses is 12 hours and you need a good conditioning solution to help make these 12 hours bearable!

Boston is the name of the range for Bausch and Lomb for RGP lenses and they are maybe slightly more pricey than own brand products but having tried the cheaper alternative they just don't live up to the cleaning and conditioning system that Bausch and Lomb provide, my eyes became sore and dry very quickly and the preservatives used in some cheaper brands can cause discomfort when wearing the lenses. Own brand systems do not offer the comfort and reduced friction over the cornea which leads to the dreaded red eye meaning you need to remove your lens and allow your eye to heal for a day while unable to wear your lenses to correct your vision which is not ideal.

Boston packaging is inoffensive and bottles have different coloured tops for the cleaner and conditioning solution to avoid mix ups and instructions on the back are big enough to read easily with a clear use by date visible on the back of each bottle along with storage advice.

I would only recommend Bausch and Lomb Boston to people wearing RGP lenses as it offers an unrivalled cleaning and conditioning system leading to very comfortable contact lenses for prolonged use.
