I wear contact lenses most of the time, and as such I get through a fair amount of contact lens cleaning solution. I've worn contact lenses since I was in my teens (I'm in my 30's now), and so I've had years of experience with both the lenses and the solutions. I wear both the monthly disposable contact lenses and the daily disposable contact lenses, I wear the monthly lenses most of the time, and I use the daily lenses for travelling.
I used to always use the Bausch & Lomb Renu solution, as this worked for me and I didn't see any reason to change, however I have been also using supermarkets own solutions on and off. I've probably tried most of the contact lens solutions out there over the years, some are great, and some I don't like. At my last contact lens check up my optician recommended this fairly new solution by Bausch & Lomb - Biotrue. He gave me a full size bottle to try out, and I liked it so much that I've continued to purchase it
I do always look out for it on offer as my contact lens regime already costs me a fortune as I buy monthly disposable lenses, daily disposable lenses, saline, comfort drops and obviously the cleaning solution. I've just recently picked up two bottles of Biotrue from Boots where they're on a buy one get one half price offer. The full price of a bottle of Biotrue in Boots is £11.99, and it's a 300ml bottle.
I find that a 300ml bottle of Biotrue will last me around 2 months. I don't wear my contact lenses 7 days a week, probably 5 or 6 days a week on average, and I also wear the daily disposable contact lenses occasionally as well so I don't need to clean my monthly lenses every single night. The bottle states that you do need to dispose of any used solution 90 days after opening.
Biotrue is really easy to use, and you use it just like all of the other all-in-one solutions on the market; first of all wash your hands, then remove each lens in turn, place the lens in the palm of your hand and pop a few drops of Biotrue onto the lens, gently rub each side of the lens with the pad of your finger taking care not to damage or nick the lens, rinse the solution off with either saline or a bit more Biotrue and then place the lens in the correct side of your contact lens case, which you've filled up with more Biotrue, repeat for the other lens, leave to soak for at least 4 hours or overnight, your lenses are then clean and ready to wear in the morning.
You can put your lenses in straight from the solution in the morning, but I normally find that more often than not most contact lens solutions can make my eyes sting a little bit when I do this. I would normally solve this problem by just giving each lens a quick rinse with saline before I put it in, this then makes the lenses instantly comfortable when I put them in. I've found with Biotrue that it hardly ever stings my eyes when I insert my contact lenses in the mornings, just the odd time, and that only seems to be when I'm particularly tired and my eyes are a bit sore and tired anyway. Although Biotrue is a very gentle solution I do find that it keeps my lenses perfectly clean and clear, and it continues to do so for the life of the contact lens i.e. a month.
Biotrue comes in a plastic squeezy bottle, you just remove the lid and squeeze the bottle to dispense the solution; a gentle squeeze will dispense a small amount of solution to use to rub your lens clean, and a hard squeeze will dispense a steady jet of solution to fill your contact lens case. Each packet of Biotrue also comes with a contact lens case, it's a flat case as opposed to the barrel case which I like, as I always manage to nick a piece out of the edge of a contact lens in the barrel case. The little flat case that they give you is even colour coded with a green lid for one lens, which is handy for if your lenses are different prescriptions, but you should keep your lenses separate anyway for hygiene reasons.
I've not had any problems at all with Biotrue, in fact I prefer it as it feels like a milder and kinder solution on my eyes, hence the lack of stinging when I insert my contact lenses in the mornings. I find that it keeps my lenses perfectly clean and clear, and it continues to do so for the life of the contact lens i.e. a month (well actually up to 2 months sometimes as I don't always use a new pair every month if I've only had a few wears out of them). I will definitely continue to buy Biotrue even though it's more expensive than a lot of the contact lens solutions out there.
I have worn contact lenses for some years now but until I found Bio True solution have not had very much success. I, like an earlier writer, was given this product by my daughter who doesn't wear contact lenses and who had received it in a free pack from Tesco's. Before using Bio true I had to remove my contact lenses at about 7 pm each day because my eyes were very dry and the lens was becoming very uncomfortable and I was unable to see properly in them. My optician gave me drops to try but it didn't seem to help very much. Now with Bio true I wear my lenses from 8 am to midnight each day without any problem and unlike before, when I put them in each morning, they are immediately comfortable and I can see very clearly. In fact I now forget I am wearing them.
I must agree the price is very high in comparison to other solutions but the comfort and ease I feel when wearing my lenses now, goes a long way to compensating for the extra cost. Do shop around as there are some places selling it a little cheaper.
As you may see from previous reviews I have been wearing contact lenses for some years now. I recently reviewed Superdrugs Saline Solution as this is generally the brand I keep a bottle or two of as a spare in case the ones I get from my opticians runs out. However I was recently in my local Tesco when they had a promotional weekend at the pharmacy, they were giving away goodie bag type things which contained various health products, one of which was a large bottle of Bio True Multi Purpose Solution for contact lenses. I had never heard of this make before, but as it was suitable for my contact lenses I decided to give it a try.
The bottle of Bio True Multi Purpose Solution comes in a light green rectangle box with the name of the product written on the front of it. Unfortunately I cannot remember the exact details of the outer box as I threw this away once I started to use the solution as it makes the bottle less bulky to store. The solution itself comes in clear yet very slightly textured/ frosted plastic bottle, this allows you to see the solution inside the bottle. The bottle has a white plastic lid on top of it with a small white plastic dropper in the middle of it. The dropper does not have what I would call an actual lid but instead has a small plastic cap which clips over the top, it is just big enough to cover it to keep it clean and hygienic, to expose the dropper you simply pull the cap off and clip it back in place once finished. I did find the cap a little hard to remove to start with, however what I did find useful is that the cap is actually attached to the lid of the bottle with a piece of plastic so that when you remove it you cannot loose it.
The bottle has a clear plastic label wrapped around most of the bottle. The front section of the label contains the name of the product "Bio True Multi Purpose Solution" just below this is written "Inspired by your eyes" all of the information seems to be written above the previous piece like a list form. The next information on the front of the bottle is made up of 3 bullet points stating facts about the solution itself. All of the information on the front of the bottle is written in green and blue writing which I have to say is quite hard to read unless you get it in the right light, all of this information is repeated in a further two languages. The label on the back of the bottle is a little over whelming, it contains all of the relevant product information and is written in tiny blue writing, again I did find this a little difficult to read. This information includes ingredients, cautions, warnings and directions of use, again all of the information is repeated in a further two languages.
The Bio True Multi Purpose solution is basically a clear liquid and looks just like water, it also has virtually no smell to it at all. The solution is ideal for soft contact lenses which is what I use, it is also suitable for silicone hydro gel lenses. The Bio True contact solution is described as biology for your eyes and is said to work just like your eyes, it is Ph balanced to match healthy tears and is also designed to help clean and fight germs. This particular contact lens solution can be used to carry out all the necessary daily cleaning of your lenses including cleaning, disinfecting, removing protein, rinsing and storing, this basically does the same as my current contact lens solution which I get from my optician so I was more than happy to give this a go.
Directions for Use
On the back of bottle Bio True list 3 steps that you need to carry out in order to, as they put it, condition your contact lenses. The 3 steps include
* Place at least 3 drops of the solution on each side of the lens surface and rub gentle for 20 seconds
* Thoroughly rinse each side of the lens for at least 5 seconds with the solution
* Place the cleansed lens in the lens case and fill with the solution, soak for at least 4 hours
Whilst I think that having the directions of use on the back of the bottle is handy especially if you are new to using contact lenses, I do think that this is a bit precise. Personally when I use my Bio True Contact Solution is simply fill the two sides of my contact lens pot with the solution, I then remove the lens and squirt a small amount of the solution onto the lens in my hand and gently rub it clean and then place the clean lens in the case, I then leave them in the solution over night. I have found this to be just as good a method of keeping my lenses clean rather than precisely measuring out amount of drops I use.
The warnings listed on the back of the bottle are pretty standard for this type of product, the main warning that the information emphasises is to make sure you discard used solution and never reuse it, doing this can lead to contamination which in turn can lead to eye injury or in sever cases loss of vision. Using clean fresh solution each time you clean and store your lenses is very important, and it also states that you should never use plain water to clean and care for your lenses, again this can cause contamination leading to infection, injury or loss of vision. The warnings also state that your should discard any remaining solution 90 days after opening the bottle, personally I find that mine does not last that long.
Price and Availability
As I have mentioned I didn't actually pay anything for my bottle of Bio True Contact Solution as it was a freebie in Tesco, to be honest I cant say I have actually noticed this product being sold in my local Tesco since, however I have seen it sold in Boots. The bottle I received was a 300ml bottle and in Boots this exact same sized bottle is sold for £14.49, I have to admit I was quite shocked at the price of this product, I guessed it wasn't going to be the cheapest of contact solutions but I had no idea it would be this expensive. Whilst it does seem to be an excellent quality contact solution and lasts pretty well there is no way I would pay out that sort of money every time I wanted to buy a bottle of contact solution.
I have used this solution for a few months now as I actually ended up with two bottles of this as my Mum received one too and wears glasses rather than lenses so she gave me hers. The solution does an excellent job of cleaning and caring for my lenses, whilst it doesn't actually make any promises of being suitable for sensitive eyes it has not irritated me at all. After cleaning and storing my lenses in the solution they feel clean and comfortable in my eyes and any solution on the lens does not make them sting or itch at all. The solution is ideal for soft lenses which is perfect for me as this is what I wear. For me the only disadvantage of this solution is the very high price tag, whilst it is of an excellent quality and really does do what it says it will in my opinion it is very over priced at nearly £15.00 a bottle. I would recommend this on the basis of its performance and how well it cleans and stores your lenses but based on the price I wouldn't as I feel it is too much for a contact solution.
