Biofinity - freedom for your eyes
Member Name: sepinroth
Advantages: Comfort, safety, constant clear vision
Disadvantages: Price, thickness
I have been using Biofinity for the past 3 months. These are soft lenses that can be worn for up to 30 days without taking them out. The idea is that the user does not transfer bacteria from his/her hands by daily/overnight changes and the lenses stay in the eyes all the time.
Excellent durability. For the past 15 years I have been using Johnson's Acuvue and have accidentally torn or damaged a number of lenses. Biofinity are way better in this matter.
They do what they are supposed to, which is provide excellent vision without taking them out for the night. It is an amazing feeling to wake up in the morning and be able to see the time on the clock (-7.00 and -6.50 in my eyes! ) :):):)
No pain, 'sandy' feeling, itchiness, redness whatsoever even after 20 or more days of constant wearing. When the eyes got a bit dry, I put some moisturising drops (any would do - just check they are suitable for contact lenses wearers) and clear vision came back.
What is more, my eyes are slowly getting their 'whites' whiteness back, which was impossible with Johnsons Acuvue. I remember well enough that after 10 hours of wearing previous lenses I was often unable to finish work in the night due to red eyes. This is now a thing of the past and such a relief.
I also appreciate the comfort of Biofinity staying in place during showers/bad weather/dusty or smoky conditions (like in the disco). Holidays with Biofinity are excellent - no need to carry extra bag with the solution and other extra stuff.
Now, the not so good things. I guess nothing is perfect.
Price. They are way more expensive than Johnsons Acuvue.:
16.50 GBP for 6 at Lensway for Acuvue
39.00 GBP for 6 at Lensway for Biofinity
With the need to buy 2 boxes the difference in cost is massive :/
Thickness can be a problem for some users. It takes time to get used to something new in the eyes. Some people may find it irritating, some eyes will not tolerate different size of the lenses (they are slighly bigger than Acuvue) or might even be allergic to some of the components of the lenses.
Biofinity are silicon-based with 48% of liquid content, which is less than Acuvue with 58% of liquid and etafilicon A as a material.
In the end, I guess I am one step closer to have a laser surgery, as I am so used to the comfort of not having to perform the daily cleaning routine of changing the lenses.
Definitely worth trying, you may enjoy more freedom with your eyes sooner than you think.
