Cosmetically pleasing but a disastor for eye health

I have been wearing prescription contact lenses for over 5 years and I recently decided to get some coloured contact lenses. Having quite a dark brown iris I really wanted to know how changing the colour of my eyes would affect my overall appearance. The contacts comes in different colours such as green, blue, brown and grey. These are daily disposable lenses so the lenses are worn for a day and then they are thrown away at the end of the day. I choose the grey colour after trying a pair of trial lenses. They looked pretty good and so I ordered 10 pairs of them. They seemed to give a nice natural colour but this is probably because I have quite large pupils and my iris is quite dark so its not so obvious that I am wearing lenses. They really aren't suitable for those with a small pupil AND light iris because the true colour will still be seen. The diameter is very large of the iris colour on the contact lens and so those with larger pupils will get a more natural colour. I got mine from my local opticians for £20 and this seems pretty expensive but if you choose the monthly ones they are much cheaper. I don't like cleaning the lenses and prefer to have a fresh pair of lenses each day. When I tried the contact lenses for the day they instantly transformed my eyes and my face. The colour of the contacts seemed to brighten my face and my eyes. My eyes where defined and bright. There was a major problem though that I found with these lenses is that the material is hydrogel and has a high water content, so this means it dehydrates really quickly and as I have dry eyes this makes it worse. I find that the lens stick to my eye making it very difficult to remove the lenses and so subsequently I don't wear my contacts for that long. The main reason for getting coloured contacts was because I have brown eyes and think that this quite boring. The contacts did make my eyes brighter but the material is of poor quality and they exasperated my dry eyes. I did use drops to help with the symptoms but they didn't work very well. If the contacts where made from silicone hydrogel then I am certain that they would be more comfortable. The market for coloured lenses is not huge and this is the primary reason that these lenses have not been upgraded to a silicon hydrogel. I have stopped using them as they are unhealthy for my eyes but they may work better with those who have a better ocular surface. After recommendation from my optometrist that the lenses are making my dry eye worse I have discontinued use. For those looking for an occasional colour change then this is the best product but it does depend on your eyes, so ask your optometrist first.

Get yourself a fresh look with freshlook lenses

I am one of those people who is never happy with the way I look and always wanting to change something. It's just a good job I can't afford plastic surgery, as no doubt I'd end up looking like Pete Burns! Last year I convinced myself that I needed (not wanted, needed) to have brown eyes. My grey-blue eyes just weren't cutting it! I have pale skin and dye my hair dark and I figured that dark eyes would look much better on me. I wear contact lenses most days as I have really poor vision and set about trying to find some coloured lenses online. I wear daily disposables and although I have in the past used the washable lenses I simply don't like them, so looked specifically for daily disposable coloured lenses. The only make I could find were the Ciba Vision freshlook dailies. These are prescription soft lenses, so you will need to know what your prescription is before you buy them. Unfortunately the choice of colours available for the one day lenses was more limited than with the washable ranges. As far as I can tell there are only four colour options - Pure Hazel, Blue, Green and Grey. As I wanted brown eyes I went for Pure Hazel, although would have opted for a darker brown if there had been that option available. The lenses come boxed and you get 10 lenses per box (two strips of five), and obviously as you need to wear two at a time (unless you're going for the one eyed look!) then this will give you five days of wear. The lenses come in a blister pack like any other contact lenses would and they actually have a coloured eye printed onto each lens. Rather than being a solid colour it is printed to look like an actual iris, to make it look more natural when you're wearing the lenses. To be honest this actually looks slightly terrifying when you remove the strip of lenses from the box as it's like there's five little brown eyes staring up at you! When it came to putting the lenses in I found them to be very comfortable and they felt no different to wearing my usual lenses. They were in no way scratchy and nor did they become dry or irritated at any point. The colour was quite strong and they did make my eyes look like they were brown - there was no hint of the blue coming through. One thing I did notice was that the size of the coloured iris printed onto the lens, was slightly bigger than the actual iris of my eye. This meant that you could see less white of my eye, making my eyes look smaller. I guess this is just because different people have different sized eyes and I suppose it's better than having the coloured part be too small, as no doubt that would look even stranger. Other than that I did think that they looked fairly natural, although having gone 26 years with blue eyes, it took a bit of getting used to when looking in the mirror! I remember the first time I wore these I went out for an evening meal with some friends. The restaurant was dimly lit and I remember thinking that my vision was very slightly blurry. It happened the second time I wore them too, so I got on the internet and discovered the cause, which is actually quite obvious when you think about it... When you're in a dark place your pupil expands to let in more light. Obviously as these lenses have a pattern of an eye printed onto them, when your pupils dilate unfortunately it is possible for the pattern to actually cover the pupil very slightly which will obscure your vision. I must say this was only very slight and it didn't stop me from seeing completely, it was just that now and again things would seem to blur just a little bit. Due to this little problem, these are probably more suited to wearing during the day, which is a shame as I think most people would probably choose to wear coloured contact lenses for nights out. As these are one day lenses you simply need to take them out and throw them away when you're done. You can't sleep in them, and they can't be put in solution to re-use either. Like all daily disposables these are a bit more expensive than the washable lenses. They cost £13 for a box of 10 and I bought mine from www.contactlenses.co.uk. Although it's a site I've only used once I was impressed with the service and would recommend it. I do like these lenses and I do think that they are a bit of fun for when you fancy a change. The price is too high for me to want to wear them every day so I do keep them for special occasions. It's a little bit of a shame that they can obscure your vision a bit at night, but they're comfortable to wear and the fact you throw them away after one use makes them more hygienic too. They're not perfect but I would recommend them if you want to change your look.
