After several years of using Opti Free Xpress solution to clean my contact lenses, my optician suggested that I make the move and start purchasing the Opti Free Replenish solution instead.
This solution does everything that the Opti Free Xpress does, however it does what it says on the tin and works to replenish the moisture and the quality of your lenses whilst you sleep. Overall it should enhance the life of the lenses by preventing them from drying out or becoming brittle over the course of a week or fortnight, however long you wear them.
As with other solutions, I remove my lenses and give them a thorough clean with Opti Free Replenish before popping the lenses into a contact lens case, filling each well with solution, and leaving them to soak overnight.
To be honest, I notice very little difference between this and the Opti Free Xpress however I do feel that I am doing the best for my lenses and indeed my eyes by using this solution and would continue to do so.
Opti-free Replenish Multi-Purpose Disinfecting Solution
Searching for a contact lenses solution might be confusing due to the variety of products available in the market. The aim of these products is to keep your contact lenses clean from microorganisms and minimise the risk of eye infections. They also moisturise the surface for enhanced wearing comfort.
Depending on the type of contact lenses you use (soft or hard lenses) the appropriate solution must be selected. Usually the product should be proposed and approved by a specialist eye doctor according to the needs of each individual, since not all solutions are compatible with the different types of lenses.
Opti-free Replenish Multi-Purpose Disinfecting Solution was initially provided to me by my eye doctor as a free sample. I have been using it since then but I have occasionally tried other products too. To be honest, I rarely change a product that works perfect for me with another solution and when it comes to my eye health I tend to be very careful. Therefore, I have only used different solutions a few times and in special occasions where I need to sleep over to a friend. I have experienced a bad reaction only once with a product from a brand that was later discontinued, which caused redness and annoying irritation to my eyes. Since then I've been very selective with lens care products and I always carry my storage case in my bag, filled with my own solution.
Opti-free Replenish is a multipurpose disinfecting solution by Alcon, for silicone hydrogel and soft contact lenses. The multiple purposes include rinsing, cleaning, disinfecting and storing, all with the same solution. This practically means that you can use one product instead of two for the caring of your contact lenses.
First, it cleans lenses and improves comfort by retaining the moisture. Everyone who wears contact lenses knows that keeping them clean is the most important part of lens care. The cleaning step should be performed for the lenses and for the case, each time they are used.
Second, the remaining debris that deposit on the lens surface during wear are removed with rinsing. The proper cleaning and rinsing of reusable lenses can eliminate at least 90% of bacteria, therefore this step is recommended to retain the eye health and prevent infections.
The disinfecting agents kill the harmful microorganisms on the lens, including bacteria. This is performed during the storage time which should be enough for the disinfection process to be completed.
This product is a clear transparent liquid which is very gentle for the eyes. It moistures the lenses surface to avoid dryness and other irritations. It is a no-rub solution but my doctor recommended to always rub my lenses gently after rinsing to remove any protein or deposits.
The cleaning process is part of my daily routine and sometimes I do everything quickly, either because I am bored or because I am late. However, I have noticed that when I am dedicated to follow the proper cleaning steps I have clearer vision and I don't get that blurriness on my lenses at the end of the day.
"The Cleaning Routine" (How to use)
Multi-purpose solutions are the simplest and more convenient solutions. Contact lenses need to be cleaned and sterilised each time you remove them and before you wear them again. The following steps should become a part of your daily routine to keep your eyes safe and healthy.
- The first thing you have to do is to wash your hands thoroughly and dry them.
- Remove the contact lens and place it to the tip of your finger.
- To clean your contact lens after removing it, you should first apply a few drops of the solution to your lens and use your finger to rub the front and back surface gently to loosen dirt and other deposits.
- Rinse the lens thoroughly with the solution, fill your case with fresh contact lens cleaning solution and store them. Repeat the same procedure for your other lens.
Don't forget to clean the storage case regularly with the same solution and replace it at least every three months.
The minimum storage time to ensure disinfection is 4-6 hours.
"Packaging & Price"
Opti-free Replenish solution comes in a 300ml plastic white bottle with a security seal on the cap, which can be easily removed. The cap is a big flip top that stays in place even after multiple openings and closings. The front label contains all the details about the product and has an oversized blue contact lens in the background.
The bottom of the provided storage case is white and the caps have different colours to distinguish the right from the left lid. The right lid is green and it has a huge R imprinted on top and the left one is white with the Alcon brand logo.
The cost of 300ml of Opti-free Replenish Multi-Purpose Disinfecting Solution is £9.00 at www.contactlenses.co.uk and from £9.35 at Amazon.co.uk
You can stock up on the twin pack offer which is the most economical. For £16.00 you buy a twin pack containing 2 bottles of 300ml each and two storage cases.
There is a 60 ml bottle that you can carry when travelling and includes a free storage case. The travel size bottle costs £4.00.
The OPTI-FREE RepleniSH Multi-Purpose Disinfecting Solution contains a number of ingredients: buffering agents, a moisturizing agent, conditioning agents, disinfecting agents and a cleaning agent.
The buffering agents, sodium borate and sodium chloride maintain the neutral PH of the liquid. To keep the surface of the contact lens moisturized and supple and to prevent the surface from drying out, Opti Free Contact Lens Solutions contain the moisturising agent fluid propylene glycol. This ingredient keeps the contact lenses lubricated and makes them more comfortable to wear.
It also contains the proprietary conditioning formula TearGlyde. TearGlyde is a dual action reconditioning system (Tetronic 1304, nonanoyl ethylenediaminetriacetic acid). POLYQUAD (polyquaternium-1) 0.001% and ALDOX (myristamidopropyl dimethylamine) 0.0005% are preservatives and disinfectants against fungal and bacterial growth while being gentle on the eyes.
It does not contain toxic chemicals.
"Other Opti-Free solutions"
Alcon is the largest eye care company worldwide, dedicated "To help people see better". It produces a variety of products for eye health, including the Opti-Free Replenish Multi-Purpose Disinfecting Solution. Other products for soft and hard lenses are:
- Opti-free Pure Moist Contact Solution. It contains HydraGlyde® Moisture Matrix for extra moisture to keep contacts hydrated throughout the day, delivering comfort from insertion to removal. Gentle for sensitive eyes.
- Opti-Free Express Lasting Comfort Formula.
- Opti-Free GP Multi-Purpose Solution for Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) or hard contact lenses.

"What about "private label" products?"
As a parenthesis, I would like to mention the "private label" products that are available in the market. They look similar to the original products and they are much cheaper. These store-branded solutions are safe for the eye-health but they usually use older formulations and therefore they don't have the same advantages as the name-branded products. One other thing is that stores select those products based on the best offer and there is a possibility to change suppliers and product formulations if they find cheaper offers.
Multi-bottles are very popular due to the ease of use. They are more expensive than regular saline solution but the lenses care routine becomes much easier and faster.
The Opti-Free Replenish Multi-Purpose Disinfecting Solution offers cleaning, disinfecting, rinsing, and storing at the same time. Hence, with this solution no other lens care products are necessary. It reconditions the lenses to keep them hydrated for enhanced comfort without causing eye dryness.
This product works great for my needs and I would recommend it as a high quality solution for soft lenses.

I used Opti-free for around six years since I first started wearing lenses. The only reason is because I had them on direct debit from my optitions.
I would say this solution is pretty average. A 900ml bottle on average cost about £10-13 if bought seperatly from lenses. You can by them in most chemists and supermarkets. I have also used a supermarket brand solution that cost £1.97 and found absolubtly no difference at all apart from the label on the bottle. Since changing optitions and finding out I have sensitive eyes they changed my solution. This made a big difference in my lense wearing experience. My eyes no longer sting and water when I put my lenses in, where with opti-free they did. This could be because I have sensitive eyes. People with normal eyes may not find this a problem.
One advantage of opti-free is the bottle. It comes in a nicely branded green carboard box , which contains a contact lense holder.I really like this holder as it looks nice. The left hand lid is white and the right hand one is green so you can't get your left and right lenses mixed up. It is very slim and rounded and looks and feels nice. Better than your average.
The soultion bottle is nice aswell it has the same label wrapped around a plastic bottle. The bottle is round and the perfect size to comfortably put your hand around to squeeze. It is made from a shiny plastic which feels nice to touch. The liquid itself comes out of a small nozzle. It has the lid attached to it in a toothpaste sort of style so you can't loose it. If you've ever taken the lid off the bottle and put it down and then can't see it because you've just taken your lenses out you'll know what I mean.
Overall this solution is pretty average. Not good for sensitive eyes. Nice packaging.Quite expensive seeing as you can buy the same sort of thing for a £10 less.
I began to wear contact lenses at the start of this year and up until about two month ago never really had any issues with them. I was new to the whole experience so did not really notice that my lenses not being cleaned as well as they should have been by the solution provided by the optician I am with. I use the monthly disposables and have begun to notice after using the solution in a always clean case every night after about 2 weeks of the four week cycle the lenses were not being cleaned as well as I would have expected. A friend suggested trying a different solution as he had had si9mialr problems with the opticians own brand and the Opti Free Replenish was the first brand I came across and I have found it to be a very good product.
After only two days use I began to notice them cleaning my lenses and maintaining moisture in them much more effectively than before. They clean, disinfect, retain and moisturise the lenses superbly. My lesnes dry up far less quickly than using previous solutions and thus whereas before my lenses start to feel uncomfortable early into the afternoon now they don't start to be noticed until later in the evening if left in that long. Also at a mere glance they look far cleaner without as much build up of residue or anything which may have landed on the lenses during the day.
In essence after a night of soaking in the Opti Free Replenish solution it feels like putting in a new pair of lenses each time and the dry eye I felt I was developing before has seemingly gone and my eyes feel fresh all the time!
The first bottle has lasted two months and I will get easily another 4-5 out of it so its also good value for the £14 you may pay in high street chemists although I am now left with stacks and stacks of opticians own solution which I no longer use.
All in all this product has made my contact lens wearing far more comfortable, clean and generally easier than previous all because of the solution. If you feel like me your lenses aren't as clean as they should be, they are drying up to fast or your eyes feel dry then look no further than this product!

I have worn contact lenses for over twenty years and although I now wear continuous wear contact lenses and so don't use solutions on a daily basis, there are times when my eyes feel particularly dry or uncomfortable and need to be removed and cleaned.
Opti-Free Replenish is my first choice because of its ability to retain moisture by reconditioning the lense surface as well as doing the usual cleaning, rinsing, disinfecting and storing (the solution comes with a handy storage case to soak your lenses in overnight if you do not wear continuous wear). This solution also removes protein deposits daily which prevents a build up on your lenses which can diminish the quality of the lense and therefore the quality of your vision so this is a bonus as other methods can be quite time consuming needing separate solution.
This solution makes my lenses feel almost brand new again once they have been cleaned and/or stored in this solution. The lenses feel and look moist and my eyes immediately feel refreshed and no longer dry. My vision is clearer and the surface of the eye feels generally more comfortable than it did before and particularly if, in the morning my eyes feel tired, a quick rinse can make me feel instantly more awake!
The bottle comes with a security seal which is always reassuring and the solution lasts for six months.
I would say however (and this goes for all brands of 'no rub'solution) in my opinion, even though they say 'no rub' formula I think that gently rubbing the lenses with a few drops of solution on each side as opposed to rinsing them for around 5 seconds on each side (as advised) is a much more effective way to clean the lenses (as long as your hands are clean) not to mention a more economic way as you don't then use as much solution!
This solution is fairly expensive, retailing at around £12 for a 300ml bottle although Boots do sell a value pack of two of these sized bottles for around £22. You can buy a smaller sized 120 bottle for £6.99 which is handy for your handbag or holidays or if, like me, you don't use much solution.
I would highly recommend this product for any contact lense wearers.

I had been using Opti-free express contact lenses solution for a while when my local supermarket stopped stocking it in favour of the replenish version instead. I was quite disappointed as the replenish version is slightly more expensive and comes in a smaller 300ml size. However just like the express version, it comes in a white opaque bottle and you can see how much solution is left if you hold it up to the light. This is handy so you don't run out. One large bottle tends to last me about 5 weeks. You get a replacement contact lenses case with the solution and it's safe to use with silicone hydrogel lenses like mine. It's an all-in-one solution so you don't need any other contact lenses solution. It has a no-rub formula which is an added bonus. It is also available in smaller bottles which is handy for holidays. When I first started using it, I loved it. My contact lenses felt more moist than usual and I never got any deposits. However after about 3 months of using it my eyes started to sting a bit. I stopped using this solution and went back to my old one and my eyes are fine now. Obviously the solution didn't suit me but I'd still recommend others try it and see if they get on better with it, as it could have been just me!
This is by far the best contact lense cleaner. I've tried many others, but always come back to this.My lenses always feel 'fresh' and clean with opti-free,don't dry out like they do with other solutions. It cleans, reconditions, rinses and disinfects effectively. I'm happy :)
I have worn contacts since I was 16 and originally used the solution Boots gave out as standard - the all in one. I didn't always look after my lenses properly since I chose to wear the continuous wear and didn't take them out often. As a result I began to suffer from dry eyes. This solution didn't lubricate them as much as my eyes needed so i was told to try the opti free.
This is by far a much better solution and my favourite (iv tried some of the other lens solutions my sisters/friends use) it lubricates and it makes the lens very wearable and comfortable throughout the day. I work in a very dry atmosphere due to the air con but this doesnt seem to affect the dryness of the lenses too much unless i havent taken them out in a few days or the lenses are getting a bit old. The lenses iv been wearing are the Acuvue continuous wear. I find the prices at boots for opti free are okay but unlikely to be the cheapest. It is the preferred solution amongst my family but a lot more expensive than other brands. If you have problems with your eyes, this is a solution you shoud try.
I have used Opti-Free solution for years and find it's a good 'all-rounder' for storing and cleaning. This new Replenish doesn't seem to be much different if at all, from their original fluid but I think as all round value for money and it's up there in the top three solutions. I use it also to store daily lenses, which if you are using them on holiday putting them in in the morning then maybe popping them out while you swim, Opti-Free is gentle enough to store the dailies as they seem to be a bit thinner, this solution doesn't affect them in any way. You get a good supply of lens cases with each pack of fluid but it would be nice if they could offer smaller bottles of the solution in their packs, for the same price. Obviously they may argue it would cost more but I think I'd be willing to pay a little extra for more smaller bottle multi packs, rather than their ususal three larger ones. It would make it so much easier to pack or carry those small bottles on holiday, you can buy smaller bottles seperately but relatively speaking it's a one off and very expensive, aluxury to add to your long list of thing to buy before your hols. You can't decant from a larger one to the smaller one either to refill it and those supposed travel bottles you buy, are never completely leak proof. Nice solution though but only one draw back is sometimes I would like an extra cleaner in the pack that you could use as an extra boost when some days you feel the lenses could just do with a good 'scrub'!
i have used opti-free for over 10 year. i get the solution from my options with my contacts. i have tried other solutions as they were were cheaper but was faulse economy, found they didnt clean the contacts like opti- free. opti- free seems to clean the best leaving your contacts feeling like new. i also found when using other my options said i had alot of protien build up on the lense on my eyes. but going back to opt- free stoped this. i would recoment this solution as it simply is the best i have used and everyone in my family ( five others...i know a big familly) we all use it and wouldnt swap it for anyother solution. the solution is long dated and more then enough to last you over a month. so you never run short. the top is leak prof. you can also get really small bottles which are great for holidays or for the hand bag.
this simply is the best contact cleanser ever! i mean what more do you want. its cheap and wonderful. i love it and it produces immaculate results. my contacts can irritate my eyes really easily so having a contact solution that helps my eyes adjust to teh contacts so wondefully is amazing. i love it. i reccommended this product to my one friend who just purchased cotnacts and she said its amazing. she dropped her contact in the dirt and it did wonders for her. i dont think i have had one complaint about referring a friend to use this product. its like a miracle or a fairytale come true. if it doesnt adjust teh way you want it to then try one of the different types because there are numerous kinds that are best for your eyes and contacts. if your eyes are dry then just use the dryness solutin etc etc.
Opti- Free Replenish Solution
*WHAT IT DOES*
Opti-Free Replenish is a multi-purpose solution for disinfecting your contacts. It is suitable for silicone hydrogel and soft contact lenses.
The solution will clean, rinse and disinfect contacts of any protein (which your eyes produce naturally) or any dirt, dust or grime (for example make-up) which may get onto your lenses. The more protein present the quicker your lenses will wear. If you use this solution daily it will remove and loosen the daily build up of protein deposits your eye produces. This will leave the lenses fresher and more comfortable to wear. Any lens deposits will be removed leaving clearer vision.
It will also recondition your lenses to help retain surface moisture giving more comfort when the surface moisture is low, this is when it feels like your contacts are scrapping your eyes and makes them irritated. The solution allows a thin layer of moisture to be maintained on the lens surface throughout the day. The lens and eye develop a continuous shield of moisture keeping lenses moist providing more comfort and the appearance of white eyes, as the white in your eyes aren't red from irritation. This also leads to clearer vision.
Using the solution you can store your lenses in the container they provide you with, when you are not wearing them. It will destroy any harmful micro-organisms (germs) on the surfaces of lenses. This will mean germs will not come into contact with your eyes leaving them healthier. It is formulated to disinfect and store lenses for up to 30 days after disinfection.
* PACKAGING *
It comes in a white re-sealable bottle which has a dropper which lets you squeeze the solution out. The bottle is made out of plastic which means it can be wiped clean, if it gets dirty and it's waterproof so it's protected if it gets splashed with water. There is a label on the front which is mostly green, yellow, blue and 'replenish' is written in red. There is lots of writing all over the label telling you what the solution does and how to use it.
Also included in each pack you will get a small case which has two sides to it so you can put a contact lens into each. This is particularly handy if your contacts have a different prescription for your right and left. One lid is white and the other is green to help you identify the difference between right and left. The lids are easily opened and closed by a screw lid, keeping the contact lenses safe inside without solution leaking out. It means that you can carry them about with you, keeping a spare pare if necessary. Inside there us a small compartment to put solution and a contact lens into, there is also small groves. I'm assuming this is so it will be easier to lift the contact out. The bottle and the case have both been sterilized.

Use before the expiry date which is printed on the label and discard remaining solution 6 months after opening, Do not sure with heat (thermal) disinfection. Don't use the solution if the security seal is broken as this seal ensures freshness.
* MY EXPERIENCE *
I have worn soft monthly lenses now for 5 years and I have to say that I would fully recommend this product to anyone. I have never had a problem with it in 5 years. Every person's eyes are different so it may not agree with everyone or the type of lenses you are using. The solution stores my contacts and they are fresh and clean. It keeps them moist so my eyes feel refreshed when I put the contacts in. I like the way I get a nice small case which you can differentiate between the right and left. Plus the fact there is a dropper on the bottle as it means I can get the solution into the case with minimal spillage. Also when I am cleaning my contacts I can direct the solution, so it is going directly onto the lens making as little amount of mess and spillage as possible.
Clean, disinfect and recondition your contact lenses with Opti-Free to retain moisture for enhanced comfort.
