Advantages: Improve Speed, Increase Reliability

Disadvantages: no raid 5, ide interface now dated,

Raid is a wonderful idea, write data across several drives at the same time, to either increase speed or security.

RAID 0 (Striping) spreads the data across 2 drives, making accessing files faster.

RAID 1 (Mirroring) writes the data to BOTH drives at the same time, so if a drive fails you have a backup.

RAID 0+1 does both, so you have speed and reliability, but you need 4 drives.

This card ONLY supports these modes, it does not support RAID 5. It also only has an IDE interface, running at 100mbits/s. No 133mbit support.

This device is pretty easy to setup, but you must have the driver on a floppy disk when you load windows, theres no compatibility with using on a current windows system, you will have to reload.

This device is a little limited now, being that it is a very old card.

So why am I reviewing such an old card? Well for very little money you can pick one of these off ebay and it will bring added speed to an old system. I've still got one in a second computer acting as my TV server, and its doing a great job.

Summary: Cheap way of improving an old system

You plug the PCI card into your mainboard, then the drives into the IDE ports on the card just like you would on the mainboard. A quick look on ebay you should be paying under a tenner. Obivously you'll need to pick up another hard disk too.

So, do the drives plug into the card? What sort of price are we talking about?
