I do A LOT of baking, especially of the cake kind and I am always out looking for new recipes to try to please my family and friends as well my own sweet tooth. For Christmas last year my friend gave me this cupcakes and muffins recipe book as a sort of joke because It's clearly aimed at children and she knows I'm just a big kid at heart! And I'm sure it was also because she liked the idea of me slaving away in the kitchen for her so she could enjoy my baked goods! But nevertheless I find baking extremely pleasurable and an excellent stress-buster, so found it a joy to receive a new recipe book and was nice to receive one full of colourful, mouth-watering pictures instead of just pages and pages of text.
This cupcakes & Muffins recipe book is published by 'top that!', which is an award winning independent book publisher and app developer located in Suffolk, UK. Top That! books and apps cater for pre-school children to adults and are designed to promote child development, enrich relationships, and foster creativity and imagination.
~ Price & Availability ~
This cupcakes & Muffins recipe book is available to buy on the 'Top that!' website at a currently reduced price of £7.19 from £7.99, which isn't a huge saving but none the less these days any price reductions a good one! However, Amazon have currently got it for sale for just £5.99! I think both £7.99 and £5.99 are very reasonable prices for this recipe book and would be prepared to pay the full price for it as I feel it's definitely worthy considering how expensive recipe books are today.
~ Front, back & inside~
Top That's cupcakes & muffins recipe book is a hardback, free standing, flipchart book. The one I have been given is different from the one Dooyoo is displaying, however top that's websites image is also the same as Dooyoo's so perhaps there are different versions out there or their website is yet to be updated. However going from the one I have to hand, the cover of the book is very colourful using yellows, pinks and blues with images of the cupcakes & muffins you will find inside around the title. Beneath the title it says; 39 delicious recipes for you to make and create!
Inside the book you will find a contents page followed by a handy little introduction of what cooking equipment you will need, safety and hygiene tips and how to get started - which is extremely useful for children as everything is displayed clearly with pictures. The book starts off with 20 different muffin recipes, some traditional such as your chocolate or lemon and some a little bit different such as magical or valentines muffins. Each recipe is spread out between 2-3 sides, one page has the name of the recipe and a big picture of what it should look like and then if you flip the page over you will find step by step, numbered instructions of how to make them with clear cartoon style pictures along side with an ingredients list. On most pages there is a yellow bubble with either a top tip or a potential health and safety hazard written inside for your children to watch out for. Then in the same layout 19 cupcake recipes follow which are similar flavours to the muffins with a few added extras such as birthday, union jack and crackle cupcakes. Some of the cupcakes & muffins recipes have an extra page which gives you variation options, for example you may want to add in extra nuts or fruit. The last page is blank with the heading recipes and a box below to write in your own notes.
The back of the book gives you a short description of what's inside along with the publishers details in the same style as the cover.
~ Over all opinion ~
I can't fault anything about this recipe book, It's bright, colourful, durable, child friendly, easy to understand, clear, concise....the list goes on. I have made several recipes from this book with my children and each one has turned out fantastic and weren't complicated to make - which was proved when my children have made them again without my assistance. Another good point is that you only really need basic equipment to make these muffins & cupcakes, there's no requirements for any fancy mixers or blenders.
I would certainly recommend this book to adults and children, although it is clearly aimed at the younger generation and would make the perfect gift for a child who loves to bake and wants to learn to do it independently. But, if you're like me and act like a big kid most of the time and love baking cakes then you will certainly enjoy this recipe book too!
