I'll get straight to the point. I'm not a very good cook; the first 5 years after I left home I got by on microwaved food and takeaways. However now that I have got my first grey hairs I've started to look for more healthy options and even bought myself a few cook books along the way.
I was really pleased when this book was bought for me as I have admired Gordon Ramsay's TV shows and fancied having a go at a few of the recipes (I didn't like to ask about the price but I've seen them on sale for about £10).
The book is helpfully divided up into the different meals of the day, with a range of healthy options in each - recipe on one page and a photograph of the finished meal on the other. To be fair when we have made these they have been absolutely excellent. If there is any fault in the meal you can safely blame the chef and not the book! There are also the odd pages of useful tips including subjects such as 'getting the balance of your meal right' or '5 ways with oily fish' The instructions are very clear and easy to follow, dare I say it, idiot proof...I'm sure you can sense a 'but' coming here....
But what really disappointed me was the list of ingredients that you have to include. You are asked to buy so many ingredients for each meal, many of which only turn up a couple of times in the entire book, that it costs a fortune to make anything. Often you will be lucky and will know that you just need to pop to Tesco's to pick up some walnut oil or root ginger, but the other half of the time you will be left thinking "and just what the 'eck is that when it's at home??" ....yes I mean you 50g Japanese Panko Breadcrumbs....
We probably get this book off the shelf twice a year precisely because of that. Yes it's great if you are entertaining and don't mind spending a bit of money to show off, but if you just want to pull together a healthy meal for the family that doesn't cost the earth then you are better off looking elsewhere
In my vast selection of cookery books that I have bought through-out the years, I always by and love Gordon Ramsay books. I absolutely love his programmes and could watch them all day especially the F word as i find them extremly helpful and intresting especially the Janet Street Porter segments. So I was more than thrilled when this book arrived after i had pre-ordered it as soon as it became available.
Gordons recipes are always extremely easy to follow which is great because although I really love to cook and experiment, I am not a confident cook. Also, I enjoyed that a popular chef brought out a healty eating and puts these into sections which include breakfasts, Lunches, Suppers, Cooking for children and desserts. The pictures on their own just make you want to make all the recipes, it is a very inticing book and a great read, I could read this book over and over again and the way that Gordon has wrote the recipes and his paragraphs is beautiful.
My favourite recipes from the book - all tested by me and my partner and my family - which they all love and would eat again and again include -
Sticky Chicken drumsticks (i put these with wedges/chips and some salad)
Four Cabbage Coleslaw which is great as a side to a salad.
Spiced Apple Pie (except I cheat and put tin custard all over the top - Yum!!)
This is a must for any cookery fan, even if you do not like Gordon, Give this book a try, you will be pleasantly surprised.
