So what attracted me to this book? I was becoming vegan and was researching nutritional requirements and wanted some good basic meal plans that could be adapted for my husband who is not vegan.
The book did not appear in the search results for 'vegan cookbook' I found it on a review as a recommendation. Alicia is a compassionate woman who has been'successfully vegan for a significant amount of time and is creative and knowledgeable about food groups and nutrition. The blurb on the rear of this attractive book sold it to me. Bought it for a bargain and looked forward to learning more about the vegan requirements.
You could sit on my coffee table!
This book is very professionally presented. The hardback book is covered with a glossy jacket featuring the beautiful Alicia Silverstone. The pages are nice and thick and feel nice to touch - I really don't enjoy the rough texture on some book pages. Very impressed.
I was surprised to find a weighty amount of reading material that is presented before the food stuffs. I hadn't bought the book to read and was really surprised at how quickly I became engrossed in Alicia's own story as well as her knowledge about animal welfare and environmental issues. I felt comfortable reading this extra material and began to see the bigger picture - the formatting of the book is cleverly done and it flows well.
I warmed to Alicia and resonated with her completely. I developed respect for her and thank her greatly for producing this book - more than just a cookbook it empowers you with knowledge about our planet and all living beings that inhabit it.
Importantly by the time I had read the book from cover to cover - which was easily done as I found it so interesting and informative - I had 'clicked' with the planning of vegan meals. I had the confidence to create dishes with the reassurance that all of my nutritional needs where met. And - I could easily adapt or include them with my husbands meals.

The reality of the book...
It is one thing having a great looking cookbook that will look good on the kitchen shelf. What I wanted to know was 'how user friendly is the book?'. I worked from the book initially and now because I am experienced and confident I adapt and concoct to my hearts content. The recipes in both sections of vegan and superhero are really user friendly. Both sections have a good range of recipes to choose from, ingredients are sourced easily and the instructions are clear and concise. There are some images of the finished product which I found inspiring though not essential. I was drawn to the superhero recipes more than the vegan ones as I like to include grains such as quinoa in my meals. I tend to mix and match with both vegan and superhero meals. I have tried lots of recipes and they have worked out very well. Tasty, healthy, nutritious and hubby enjoys them as stand alone dishes too!
The main benefit of purchasing this book for me was the understanding of a meal plan. What to include from each food group when you have not got dairy or meat as an option. Alicia explained it so well that it was straightforward and really easy.
There is a meal planner included which includes breakfast, lunch and dinner. Also tips about making more than you need for an evening meal so that you have some to use for breakfast or lunch the following day. I had not thought about doing that before and have found it works very well.
This book was what made my vegan diet an easy transition. It sits on my bookshelf and looks good but it doesn't stay there long as I regularly access it for recipes and inspiration. It is more than a cookbook by a long way.

A final word...
This is not a traditional cookbook. I was surprised to find a large portion of reading content - much more than a regular cookbook would reveal. This was a pleasant surprise and I very much enjoyed reading Alicia's story and philosophy. I found the information empowering and insightful as I was not aware of some of the issues that she highlighted. Once I arrived at the recipe section I was pleased to find tips, advice and a step by step natural progression component which is very helpful for anyone who wants to try being vegan as it suggests sensible ways of beginning. Once the choice is made to be vegan help is at hand via the dedicated chapter which is very supportive - this is really beneficial. If you want to adapt the super foods into your vegan diet then that chapter is waiting for you and is full of tempting treats. This is a lifestyle book that is full of inspiration along your journey - like a mentor or coach. Nothing is rigid you can mix and match between the vegan and superhero sections as I have done. Alicia has produced an incredible resource for newbie vegans or anyone who would like to dip their toe in the water.
