      Splash away

When we had our kitchen fitted a few years ago we were given the option of having a glass splashback behind the cooker which at first I wasn't particularly keen on as we had just put tiles up and I loved the look of them, but now I am so glad that I was persuaded to have one fitted. We were given a few options by the kitchen fitters one of which was this Baumatic BSB61SS which we chose in black as I thought this would complement the colour scheme in the kitchen which is white and black with green accessories. I am really not too sure how much we paid for this as it was all in the price of the complete kitchen but I have had a look online and you can pick these up from £120 to £160 from various stores and online websites.

It measures 75cm by 90cm so it extends out from the cooker each side but you can get in various other sizes and you can also get them in clear glass if you want to see the tiles or wallpaper underneath. It is made of toughened safety glass so it is tough and very hard wearing and it has slightly curved edges. Ours is fixed to the wall with screws in each corner which have been capped with a black covering so you can't see them but you can use adhesive.

The main purpose of a splashback is to prevent the wall behind from being spashed with grease or any other cooking ingredients and from the times I wipe my splashback I realise I do tend to splash quite a bit! I find that it is generally easy to clean but obviously easier if it is cleaned straight away. If I wipe it as I am cooking I find that a kitchen roll dampened is usually enough to wipe away any splashes but if I don't do it straight away especially if it is grease or oil then it needs a bit of kitchen spray to help to clean properly.

It really has protected my tiles which are a cream colour and are a matte finish so that they are not the easiest to clean. Occasionally when food has splashed outwards or if I am stirring or mixing something on the worktop and it goes on the tiles I am reminded of this as they do need quite a bit of elbow grease to clean. If I changed my kitchen again I would definitely have another splashback, maybe a clear one next time just for a change. It really has kept the cooker wall looking cleaner for longer and I do recommend it.
