Ugly, but does the job of a cooker well.
Member Name: inkjet
Advantages: Cheap, compact, heats up quickly.
Disadvantages: Looks old fashioned, no timer or fan oven.
I first came across this electric cooker when my mother got a new kitchen. The builder asked her if she wanted a built in oven and hob or a stand alone cooker slotted into the run of units. We decided on a stand alone cooker to be slotted in, the reason being that built in oven and hobs are 600mm in width whereas the stand alone type are available at 500mm as well. This was ideal for a smaller kitchen as it allowed the saved 100mm to be used for larger units.
I remember saying "as long as it is not a Beko cooker". I think my prejudice was probably based entirely on the fact that the Beko cookers are the cheapest cookers in the Argos catalogue and my perception that Beko was not a very inspiring sounding name. Low and behold when the kitchen was finished it came complete with a Beko D531 cooker installed.
This cooker is not terribly inspiring in appearance. It is plain white and looks a little old fashioned. It is solid and doesn't have any see through doors which would be useful. It is not quite flush with the built in units as due to its depth it sits out ever so slightly. It has six cheapish looking plastic knobs on the front one each to control each of the four hobs, one for the grill and one for the oven. Sadly the cooker does not have a timer.
Ok, so I have run down this little cooker and you might wonder if it has anything going for it. Well, perhaps surprisingly yes it does. The first is cost, as at only around £200 it provides cheap cooking. Energy rating is a respectable B which means it is fairly energy efficient.
It is surprisingly quick to get up to operating temperature, much faster than our previous cooker. It has a separate grill and oven which many of the cheap cookers don't have. The grill is a reasonable size, the one criticism I would have of the grill is that the handle of the grill pan is a little awkward to operate.
It doesn't have a fan assisted oven, but I don't really miss having a fan oven as most things you buy or recipes quote times for heating in a conventional oven. The oven size is not massive, but neither is it small. It is suitable for a small family, but would not be big enough for a large family. Don't expect to be able to squeeze a large turkey at Christmas either!
Overall, I would say that this cooker does a good job at basic cooking without any fancy looks or functions.
Summary: Decent basic cooker.
