Ikea Trygg Serving Bowl
by MrsD76 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Don't break the bank! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This is a large glass serving bowl that I bought simply because I liked the look of it - and at £2 it wouldn't break the bank! It's a big, chunky glass bowl and although it is completely devoid of any design features or patterns, it is still a nice looking ... bowl. It flares out from the base up, so the base of the bowl is about the size of a large saucer, while the top is more like the size of a dinner plate. It has a depth of 15cm and is dishwasher safe. ~~~~~~~~~ Simple design ~~~~~~~~~ Despite the simplicity of the design, this is a nice looking bowl. Now I must admit it isn't something I use a lot but it is nice for serving salad in if you're entertaining guests - and it's also good for a barbecue! As it's a large size it is very versatile, and you don't have to worry about it matching anything as it's completely plain. This is also good if you have a quirky set of salad servers like I do - you can pop them in the bowl and show them off without them clashing! I think you could do other creative things with this dish too, and use it as a table centrepiece with dried flowers, candles, pot pourri, and so on. This is a very easy bowl to clean under the tap but you can pop it into the dishwasher too. It has a nice sturdy feel to it and it seems to withstand a fair bit of usage without getting cracked, scratched or chipped. Ours is still in excellent condition. You can also buy small versions of this dish for £1 in both plain and frosted versions, so you can get yourself a set of bowls for very little. ~~~~~~~~~ In summary... ~~~~~~~~~ Overall I have no complaints about this dish. It's really nice looking and it's very functional. The simplicity of the design is what makes it, I think, and at the price I would definitely recommend this to anyone who tends to pick up the old item impulsively in ikea! For £2 this is a great purchase - it's a nice looking bowl that I am sure anyone would get some use out of when entertaining guests. Read the complete review |

Ikea Snitsig Pot
by Holland1 I bought this pot (or pan as I would prefer to call it!) during one of our frequent Ikea shopping trips. I didn't intend to buy one, but when I saw it for £6.50 it solved the dilemma I'd been having of wanting a decent pan to make casseroles and similar items in, but without spending a fortune. It was about two years ago when I bought ... this, and although I'll be looking to replace it soon when funds allow, it has certainly served its purpose for the last couple of years. The pan has come in very handy for those occasions I'm making casseroles, stews, tagines and paella, which require cooking on the hob to begin with, and then transferring to the oven. It has a solid base, making it suitable for cooking on the hob, and the handles on the side and on the lid are plastic. It looks reasonably smart on first purchase, although I would mention that ours is looking well used now, with some burnt marks on the inside of the pot which can't be removed as the colouring has changed. The pan comes in three sizes, and costs £6 for a 3 litre pan, £6.50 for a 5 litre pan, and £14 for the 8.5 litre pan. For the sake of 50p extra, we opted for the 5 litre pan, as we are a household of two but occasionally we'll cook for four or batch cook and freeze portions. All the recipes I've tried in this pan, including a paella recipe which claims to serve 6, have fit in the 5 litre pan. The pan is recommended for use on all types of hobs, and it has a thick three-layer base comprising of stainless steel with a layer of aluminium, which prevents food getting easily burnt and stuck to the pan. Notice it says it prevents food getting "easily burnt", it doesn't claim to stop it getting burnt at all. The lid is also stainless steel, and is designed to reflect heat back into the pan, allowing the contents to be brought to the boil more quickly than conventional pans. I do find this pan really useful for cooking a variety of dishes, and we must use it around four times per week in an average week. The base is sturdy, but the rest is fairly lightweight, making it easy to get in and out of the cupboard. We actually keep ours in an overhead cupboard, because it's easy to lift. If I had a more solid pot of this size, I wouldn't risk lifting it above head height. It is also dishwasher safe but I find it takes up quite a bit of space and also it's easier to just leave it to soak after using and then give it a wash by hand, as the dishwasher can struggle sometimes with some of my burnt-on cooking. The main downside to using this is that I often forget the plastic handles at the side aren't heatproof. This means quite frequently I'll take the pan out of the oven, give the contents a stir, and forget to use oven gloves to pick it up again. I think if the handles were metal it would be more obvious that they will be hot when you touch them! Also, one of the screws which holds the lid handle in place has come loose, so we are constantly having to re-attach the lid handle to avoid it swinging around. It's not a massive inconvenience, but I am ready to replace this with something more sturdy now. In summary, this is a very reasonably priced pan which has lasted us a good couple of years. I would expect to pay around £30 for a decent pan of this nature, so I can't really complain about the small flaws for the price. Four stars is fair I think. Ikea Legitim Chopping Board
by purplekimmy I bought my chopping board from Ikea mainly because of the price, I don't often go to Ikea, it is not a shop I feel overly comfortable in and I would rather by online from them than actually go to one of their shops. I went just because I had never been before and I happened to be visiting another shop near to where the Ikea ... was. I bought other items from Ikea and in passing saw this chopping board and though why not! I had a glass board which I didn't like as I was worried about dropping it and it was too big and cumbersome. I saw this and thought it was ideal, it's a nice small size, and it has a handle so can be carried easily. It is white plastic and is about half a centimetre thick. I have used this board a lot and find it does mark very easily, it now has many scratches and digs in it as well as being slightly discoloured. If it is left in the sink (which I did) with any curry like substance, it does make the board the same colour! No matter how much cleaning, scrubbing, bleaching has brought back the original whiteness of the board. The level of germ collection was a worry which is why although I still have this board it is not very often used. I have only ever washed this in a bowl as I don't have a dishwasher, so I don't know how it reacts to being washed in one. Although the dishwasher would clean it better and rid germs better than a quick scrub in a washing bowl, that is one disadvantage with buying plastic boards. For £1 I cannot complain about its ability to be a chopping board, it doesn't have non stick bits so unless I put it on a damp tea towel, it does scoot around the kitchen worktop when chopping.
