I love cooking and would rather make a sauce from scratch than use a ready-made one from a packet or jar, as it's cheaper and healthier as I know what's gone into it.
We already had a metal whisk in the kitchen, but I didn't want to use it as I was afraid it would scratch my non-stick pans. So I found this Brabantia Nylon whisk for the bargain price of £3.34 on Amazon, which meant I could use some of my hard-earned Dooyoo miles!
I associate the brand Brabantia with good quality, although their rubbish bins are ridiculously expensive (but they're not actually rubbish, they're quite good!). So I had high hopes for this little whisk, despite its low price. Luckily I wasn't disappointed. The whisk I bought is the small size, but they also do a bigger one (which is strangely cheaper at £2.60 from Amazon).
However, this whisk is the perfect size for me at 20cm long, as I feel like I've got good control and it fits nicely into small pans which I find easier to use when making sauces. Making a sauce with this whisk was a breeze, as it quickly mixed the butter and flour together and each gradual little bit of milk that was added was easily incorporated. The result was a perfectly smooth sauce without any lumps.
You might think that 'a whisk is a whisk' and there's not much difference in their performance, but I have used some in the past which just move the ingredients around the pan and don't actually mix them.
The design of this balloon whisk is very sturdy, as the nylon is very firm and not flimsy like some whisks I've used in the past, so I feel that it will last me a good few years. The 8 loops on the balloon part are moulded from one piece of plastic so they don't fall apart and they're stiff so they won't get all bent out of shape like the old metal whisk. The balloon shape is nicely rounded with a slight flat edge, so when you're mixing you stir up whatever is at the bottom of the pan.
It is made from high grade heat resistant nylon and can withstand temperatures to a maximum of 200°C, so there's no fear of it melting whilst using it in a pan over a hot stove.
It was very easy to clean with a washing up brush as the loops are well-spaced apart, however it is also dishwasher safe. It also has a handy hanging loop on the handle for easy storage, however because it is a small sized whisk, I find it fits easily into the kitchen drawer.
So if you're looking for a cheap, but very well-made whisk then I highly recommend this one!
