When I split up with my husband I needed to pretty much set up the house completely from scratch as I didn't take much at all when I left. I was lucky that one of my friends offered to drive me to ikea as we don't have one all that close by and it was there that I bought the bulk of what I like to call "bitty" items. One thing that I bought, and have since bought again on another trip, was the trygg serving bowl and this is my review of it.
The ikea trygg serving bowl is a clear glass bowl which is thinner at the bottom than at the top and then it comes out to a wider top...I tend to think it looks a bit like an upside down simple light shade in shape to be honest. The bowl has a diameter of 28cm at the top and so it is a good sized bowl.
The glass that this bowl is made from is thick and feels of a really good quality and I was actually surprised when I bought it that it was so cheap! I seem to remember paying around a couple of pounds for the bowl but looking online I can tell you the current price is £1.75 but you can't buy this item online so you would have to look out for it in a store.
Now although this bowl is deemed to be a serving bowl that isn't actually how I used it on either of the occasions that I bought the product. Initially when I saw it in the store I just thought it would make an excellent fruit bowl and it does work really well for this purpose. I found it held plenty of fruit such as apples and tangerines but obviously it doesn't have somewhere for bananas to hang on it or anything. My reason for replacing the bowl was actually because I kept it near to my oven and it ended up looking quite a state as grease must have splattered on it and things. Seen as it was so cheap I decided to just replace it as opposed to wash it up! The second bowl I bought started off with the same use but then I emptied it one day so that I could make a cocktail and pop it in there for when I was having family coming to stay one night. The bowl worked well for this as well and held plenty of the drink. Unfortunately I dropped the bowl in my hungover state the morning after and ended up smashing it so I don't have one anymore but I would absolutely buy it again.
This bowl has so many functions I think. You could use it as a fruit bowl as I mentioned or for mixing up a cocktail, you could use it as a decorative item with some wicker balls in as a bit of a focus point in a room, you could use it to serve salad or perhaps make a trifle as well. It really is an excellent piece for your home and it is such good quality and value for the £1.75 you will pay in ikea. I would really recommend this item if you are looking for a cheap serving bowl or fruit bowl in particular because it is well made, a good size and offers great value for money.
Thank you for reading my review!
I love Ikea and will sometimes just go there for a mooch even if I'm not going to buy anything as I love the bright modern feel and find it just gives me ideas my house. I bought this Trygg serving bowl earlier this year and paid £2 for it, I can remember this as this was the only thing I bought on this occasion.
The bowl measures 15cm high and 28cm in diameter and is a plain clear glass which I think looks stylish and classy. It is the sort of style which is not faddy so will last a long time without going out of fashion, and it will also match any table setting and colour. It tapers out from the bottom and the glass is quite thick without being chunky and it looks and feels quite solid.
There is also a smaller version of this and this is only £1 and comes in I think different colours but for me this wasn't really big enough for anything other than crisps or nuts. I liked this one as it is big enough to put on your table as a serving dish. I have used it more often for salad which I think looks good as you can see the different colours of the salad through the glass but I have also used it for pasta and rice. When I have used it for hot food I have warmed it up in the oven prior to putting the food in it, and it has kept the food warm enough to serve. The sides are deep enough to place serving spoons without them tipping up and it does hold quite a lot of food. I have easily been able to feed six people out of it.
I am a lover of trifle and do make it a lot when we have visitors and I have often used this bowl. As it is plain glass you can see the layers of the trifle easily at the sides which makes it look even more yummy. Friends have commented on this bowl and have been impressed when I have told them that I only paid £2 for it. I would recommend this bowl as a handy serving dish which looks good on your table and I might get myself another one the next time I am in Ikea.
You can put it in the dishwasher but if I have only used it for salad with no dressing I will usually just wash it in the sink and it does come up clean and sparkling both ways. I would say that you could also use this for displaying pot pourri or pine cones or other decorative accessories for your house.
This is another of those little buys that made it into the trolley along with our flatpack furniture when we moved house, purchased initially as a fruit bowl, but called into service many times as a serving bowl, a table centrepiece, and a mixing bowl. I have the 28cm diameter one, but there are smaller 17 cm ones, available in clear, frosted, and dark blue, however this larger size is only available in clear glass.
This bowl has smooth edges, and a neat clean look to it, with straight sides. The glass is nice and thick, and is smoothly finished, with no visible trapped air bubbles. It has a nice flat bottom which makes it very stable on any surface. It has a diameter of 28cm, and is 15cm high, making it a nice size for fruits, or for serving salads. The glass is nice and thick, so this doesn't feel fragile. It's very clean and minimalist, which I really like, not being a great fan of cluttered designs.
The bowl is dishwasher safe. However, I don't have a dishwasher, so I hand wash it - it does come up a bit dull if I forget to rinse off the suds, but a quick buff up with the tea towel soon has it looking like new. The bowl costs £2, which I think is excellent value, although it is not available online and therefore needs to be collected from the store, for which I am deducting one star.
There isn't much one can say about a clear glass bowl really - it does the job I need it for, and thats that. Four stars.
Back in April my little boy was 1 and we had a party for him, well it was a BBQ and to be honest it was more for the adults but we decorated the garden with banners and balloons and were lucky the sun shone. I planned on doing different salads and pasta dishes to go with the BBQ food and had been looking around for some nice bowls that weren't too expensive. On a trip to Ikea I spotted the Trygg Serving Bowl and at just £2.00 each they were exactly what I had been looking for so I bought 3.
The Trygg Serving Bowl is made from clear plain glass and measures approximately 28cm's in diameter and is 15cm's high. The serving bowl is round and tapers out from the base giving it a nice modern shape. Its very plain design wise but I think it looks quite stylish, I like the simplicity of the design.
The glass isn't overly thick but then again its not ridiculously flimsy. The serving bowls are dishwasher safe if you have one.
As I mentioned I wanted the Trygg Serving Bowls for salad and pasta dishes and they were ideal, the high sides of the bowls meant guests could dig in with serving spoons without the food spilling all over the edges, the bowls hold a good amount so I wasn't refilling them all the time.
I liked the fact that they are made from clear glass meaning they will go with any colour scheme, this is important to me as I love things to be co-ordinate and match.
Since Jayden's party we have used these bowls many times, when we have friends around I fill them with crisps and popcorn, once more the deep sides mean the popcorn doesn't get spilt over the edge, I have also used one for a trifle.
The Trygg Serving Bowl is also a good shape and size for some floating candles and flower heads this would make a lovely centre piece to a table for a special occasion.
I wash my Trygg Serving Bowls in the dishwasher and they always come out looking as new.
As I mentioned I paid just £2.00 each for my bowls and in my opinion they were well worth the money. If you use serving bowls or want a nice simple bowl for snacks or even fruit these would be ideal
With moving flats in the past few months and me getting myself a really nice big kitchen I decided when I spotted this range of bowls in Ikea to get myself one. These particular bowls come in a small size and a large size and in different colours such as dark blue as and range in price from a pound per bowl for the clear glass to £2.00 for the one I have which is clear glass and large. Its dishwasher safe though not safe for the fridge/freezer and its 28cm in diameter and 15cm in its height.
I bought mine to use originally as a fruit bowl to go on my dining table however I soon got to using it for various things to use as its intended, as a serving bowl, mainly for when I have guests.
It is made of glass and is a modern design being round to the base of it but almost almost a triangle in shape. The glass is thick and robust and very clear on mine and quite heavy and it looks great as a large serving dish for salads, rice, pasta and in fact I use this an awful lot and it has turned out to be a nice little piece for my kitchen. It washes up easily (I have no dishwasher sadly!) and it comes up as good as new. You can buy the smaller dishes to use alongside this should you want to, in fact I may invest in a set of four of those as well at just a pound a dish!
This is a great, versatile and modern looking buy with it remaining entirely functional too and it gets the thumbs up from me, I can't believe still I only paid a couple of quid for such a nice quality dish!
Only available from Ikea stores.

I have quite a few of the Trygg clear glass serving bowls from Ikea. They're cheap and they have a multitude of uses, what more could you want!
The Trygg glass serving bowls come in 2 different sizes; a large glass serving bowl - 28cm in diameter and 15cm high which costs just £2. And a smaller glass serving bowl - 17cm in diameter and 9cm high which costs just £1. The large bowl is just available in the clear glass, however the smaller bowl is available in 3 colourways; clear glass (£1), blue glass (£1.50), and clear glass with frosted horizontal stripes around the bowl (£1).
I have 3 of the large Trygg serving bowls, and half a dozen of the small clear glass Trygg serving bowls. Both sizes are dishwasher safe, and all of mine have been in the dishwasher many many times and they are all absolutely fine.
The shape of the Trygg bowls is a bit like an upside down flying saucer my husband thinks! I like that the design of the bowls is just very simple and very plain as it means that they will match any crockery and any furnishings and decor. I've used them in a modern place setting, and in a retro place setting and they've been perfect in either.
The bowls themselves are actually very heavy as they are made from very think and substantial glass. The large bowl weighs about 1 and a half kilos, it's certainly something you wouldn't want to drop onto your toe! The smaller bowls obviously weigh less, but they're still quite heavy for small bowls, around a half a kilo. I'm really impressed with how sturdy and substantial these are for the low price.
I use my large Trygg serving bowls for various things; as fruit bowls - I sometimes use 2 or 3 in a row on my long dining table with fruit in, as salad bowls at dinner, for serving big bowls of pasta to share at dinner with friends - sometimes I'll do 2 or 3 different types of pasta and so will use these, for large party desserts such as trifles, as punch bowls - again I can do different flavoured punch in different bowls, at bbqs for burger buns hotdog rolls and salads etc, as display bowls with Christmas baubles fircones or lights inside. The list is endless really, I've used these for all sorts of things, both as practical serving dishes and as display bowls.
I use my smaller Trygg serving bowls for various things as well; as individual desert dishes - especially if I've served a large desert in my large Trygg bowl, for accompaniments at the dinner table or at a bbq, as serving dishes to accompany the larger Trygg bowls, as display bowls with coloured lights or candles in. Again the list is endless, these have so many uses.
These are really good quality for the very low price, and they have absolutely loads of uses, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.
Don't break the bank!
This is a large glass serving bowl that I bought simply because I liked the look of it - and at £2 it wouldn't break the bank!
It's a big, chunky glass bowl and although it is completely devoid of any design features or patterns, it is still a nice looking bowl. It flares out from the base up, so the base of the bowl is about the size of a large saucer, while the top is more like the size of a dinner plate. It has a depth of 15cm and is dishwasher safe.
Despite the simplicity of the design, this is a nice looking bowl. Now I must admit it isn't something I use a lot but it is nice for serving salad in if you're entertaining guests - and it's also good for a barbecue! As it's a large size it is very versatile, and you don't have to worry about it matching anything as it's completely plain. This is also good if you have a quirky set of salad servers like I do - you can pop them in the bowl and show them off without them clashing!
I think you could do other creative things with this dish too, and use it as a table centrepiece with dried flowers, candles, pot pourri, and so on.
This is a very easy bowl to clean under the tap but you can pop it into the dishwasher too. It has a nice sturdy feel to it and it seems to withstand a fair bit of usage without getting cracked, scratched or chipped. Ours is still in excellent condition.
You can also buy small versions of this dish for £1 in both plain and frosted versions, so you can get yourself a set of bowls for very little.
Overall I have no complaints about this dish. It's really nice looking and it's very functional. The simplicity of the design is what makes it, I think, and at the price I would definitely recommend this to anyone who tends to pick up the old item impulsively in ikea! For £2 this is a great purchase - it's a nice looking bowl that I am sure anyone would get some use out of when entertaining guests.
