      Very helpful

looked good - failed to deliver

I spend a fair bit of time in the kitchen and enjoy cooking, and I am a bit of a OXO Good Grips fan - they tend to make kitchen tools and accessories designed to make those fiddly tasks that bit easier, through good design. All the designs are especially conceived for those with reduced mobility in their hands, whilst being suitable for all.

When I saw this 500ml measuring jug in Lakeland for £5.99, I thought it would be a great replacement for a recently dropped pyrex jug, for smaller quantities. Like a conventional jug it has the measurements up the side, but it also has an inner rim, as you can see from the picture, which allows you to see how much is in the jug more accurately, without holding the jug up to eye level.

The jug is made of plastic, and also comes in a larger side. It has a decent sized grippy handle, which works well and is comfortable to hold, there's an indentation on the top of the handle for your thumb, which means you intuitively hold it very steady. Because the handle is as big as the jug it does mean that the jug is steady and grips to the work surface to some degree when not in use. It pours extremely well too, and being small is easily stored and handy for smaller amounts.

However, I do have a couple of gripes with this product. Firstly, the packaging gave me absolutely no idea as to whether this item may be dishwasher safe. I always like to use the dishwasher where possible, having checked on the company website it appears that it is, and I have washed this with no ill effect, but I do think the item could have been labelled.

My other gripe is the actual markings on the jug which comes marked with a ml and UK fl.oz - the American version is marked in cups. The angled part does work as intended - there's no need to fill up with water, check, and re-measure and this is a plus, but the scale is not very helpful. If you can bear with me whilst I explain, as it is pretty crucial to its use, basically it is marked out in 10ml up to 100 ml, and then after that by increments of 50ml. If you enjoy cooking as I do you soon realise that this isn't very practical. I have favourite recipes (eg bread rolls) that require 140ml of water, or 225ml of milk, quantities which aren't in convenient rounded numbers as per this display. If I use this jug I can't gauge 140ml correctly, it becomes guess work - which is kind of against the idea of using a measuring jug. Before anyone points it out to me, I realise I can measure 100ml and then 40, which is what I end up doing if accuracy is needed, but it is just a faff and I can see no reason why the scale is as it is, unless it is supposed to be easier to read maybe? In terms of ease of use for more than basic cooking it is an oversight.

Apart from this, as I have already mentioned the jug pours well, and is otherwise of good quality, but I do find I don't use it as much as my previous small plain-old pyrex jug, for the reasons I have given.

The other Good Grips products I have bought have all been excellent, so this is a little bit of a disappointment. I can see that it might be very good for someone who struggles to hold a normal jug, but for me it hasn't been a great buy. Objectively, I feel I can award this item no more than 3 stars - after all if a measuring jug isn't good for measuring in whatever clever way I kind of think it falls at the first hurdle, don't you?
