Advantages: Tough. Thermal resistant. Dishwasher proof. Good size.
Disadvantages: No grips.
I was recently looking around my house for products I hadn't yet rated, and it was only when I started going through my cupboards that I truly appreciated how many Pyrex products I have! Obviously, Pyrex is a household name and yet I was completely aware that practically all of the glass dishes in my cupboards (and there are many!) are manufactured by Pyrex!
This Pyrex dish is probably the one I use the most often - infact I would go as far as to say that I probably use it every day. It is the kind of size that can be used for any baking - and it's a good enough size to be able to fit family size portions in it almost regardless of what I'm cooking. It's a rectangular dish which measures 40cm x 25cm and so it's big enough to cook a joint of meat, a roast chicken, roast potatoes, a family size lasagne.....you get the drift. It is very useful because of it's universality.
As with other Pyrex dishes, this dish is made of glass which is thermal resistant and therefore it can be used in the oven, the microwave, the fridge and even the freezer. In my experience, this dish is incredibly resilient and really does work well in all of these different environments. I used to always use metal dishes when roasting because for some reason I just thought that this would produce a better roasting effect - but having started to use this glass dish for roasting, I have found that it roasts incredibly well......with the advantage of being easier to clean afterwards. The only negative I find is that the dish is harder to hold when hot because there are no proper grips on the side of it.
I have some Pyrex products that have a 10 year guarantee - and for some reason this dish only has a 5 year guarantee. Having said that, I have had it for more than 5 years and it's still good as new with no chips or scratches. It can go in the dishwasher - although I do find that it often needs soaking for 10 minutes before putting it in the dishwasher if it's going to some up sparkling clean.
I can't remember how much I paid for the Pyrex 232B000 Excellence Roaster but I have seen it online recently for between £12 - £15 - which seems a great price considering it's going to last a long time.
Overall, I really think this is a great cooking product and it's one of those basic dishes that really should be a staple in any kitchen. Its true that it's not a sexy product, but it is probably something I use when cooking more than anything else.
Summary: Recommended.
