Pyrex Rectangular Roasting Dish
35cm x 23cm approx.
Pyrex is a brand name of a toughened glass used in cooking. I personally, have a lot of Pyrex, some bought, some given and quite a lot inherited.
The appearance is of thick clear glass and according to Wikipedia was first trade-marked in 1915 having been developed by German engineer Otto Schott and is actually called Borosilicate.
Pyrex dishes are safe up to 300 degrees centigrade, wash up well and are great for oven to table use. From a cooks point of view a selection of Pyrex dishes are surely a must have. They are clear glass, quite thick and weighty, with a solid appearance. The dishes clean up well and are dishwasher and scourer proof.
As mentioned some of my Pyrex is old, the rectangular dish I am reviewing is one I was given about 20 years ago.
When you get your Pyrex home, first remove any labels and wash in warm soapy water, then it is just a case of getting on and using them. All items can be used in the oven, under the grill or in the microwave and they are useful for any number of different household uses.
I simply love my Rectangular Pyrex Dish and it is by far the best dish for cooking homemade Lasagne in, the making being extra special as you can look in and see the food bubbling away through the clear glass sides of the dish. I do find a good tin is best for roast potatoes and Yorkshire Puddings, but the Pyrex dish is adequate for most other roasting requirements and many fancy potato dishes. I tend to make Shepherd's Pie or Lasagne in mine every week and it is used for a whole host of other items too. I use it for tray bakes and larger pies, especially if I am making a "pie" with a top only. It is always the first item I reach for if I am making dauphinoise or gratin potatoes. I also enjoy making a turkey, ham and vegetable potato topped pie in the dish. Now there are only two of us at home full time, I tend to still make a recipe using this dish and we either get two meals from the dish or occasionally if it is a vegetable laden meal we eat most of it first time, leaving enough for a vegetable side dish another day. The dish is truly versatile, left-overs store well in it and cling film works well on the Pyrex for storage, travel or microwaving.
My Rectangular dish certainly gets a great deal of use, is easy to grease, easy to dish up from and can go from oven to table without any worries.
If any bits stick to the surface, cleaning is a doddle, I find a good soak will usually dispense of most if not all stuck on food, remaining tougher sticks can easily be removed with any type of scourer. They drip dry or towel dry and tend to come out of a dishwasher if you use one sparkling. Making Pyrex an ideal oven to tableware choice.
What PYREX Say:
"Why is the Pyrex Glass Cookware unique?
Pyrex glass cookware offers a wide range of high quality products, identified by an azur tint glass. Its heat resistance (up to 300°C) allows you to use it safely in the oven and micro-wave. Its non porous and stain resistant features will keep your products hygienic and transparent for a long time. This range is very versatile (fridge, freezer, oven, micro-wave, dishwasher) and is also elegant on the table."
CONCLUSION & STARS:
I would definitely recommend the Pyrex Rectangular Roasting Dish to anyone, they are so versatile and represent excellent value for money due to the quality and they should last for many years and generations. They are tough and robust and actually quite difficult to break. I find Pyrex products truly versatile and they are a valued resource in my kitchen. Ideal for family's singles and couples.
5/5 highly recommended.
PRICE AND AVAILABILITY:
At the time of writing (December 2013) the Dish is £7.41 from Amazon which is a really good price. Also available from John Lewis, larger Supermarkets and lots of other outlets. Make sure you get the real deal though as I have found any other glass cookware is just not as good.
I hope you found my review helpful and informative?
When I moved into my house my mum gave me quite a few different kitchen items as she has loads of them and didn't use most of them.
One of the things which I inherited from her was a Pyrex roasting dish.
The roasting dish is rectangular in shape and measures 35x23cm in size. The first thing that I noticed about the dish is that it is so solid and heavy and I could tell this wasn't some cheap glass dish as it just feels like it is a quality one. The glass is really smooth and thick and I wouldn't be worried about it chipping and cracking unless it got dropped from a height onto a hard surface. Not that I have tried it but I would be confident of this falling off the worktop and landing on the floor and not breaking because it is so solid.
The dish is a good size for roasting meat. It isn't huge but it can fit in a chicken with some potatoes easily enough around the sides and I find it more than large enough for me personally. It goes in my oven on the shelf with plenty of room and it isn't too high either so I could actually if I wanted bake something in this and then also bake something on another tray on a different shelf.
This is great for roasting meat as the glass actually helps with the cooking of the bottom of the meat too and helps to slightly brown it so it doesn't look so anaemic when it comes out of the oven. I do think it isn't the best dish for cooking some items such as chips as these tend to stick to the bottom of the glass but I have a liner and a shallow metal tray for those sort of things so I don't need to use this one.
Because it is such a nice dish I have also used it as a serving dish straight from the oven where I have put the food on the middle of the table in this for everyone to help themselves and it looks good.
Also because this is glass it gets very hot so you really need to be careful when getting it out of the over and make sure that you use some protection on your hands. It has nice easy grip handles on the sides which are comfortable to hold even when there is something heavy in the dish so it isn't awkward to carry.
Washing this up afterwards is so easily and most food just comes off with little effort from it with a cloth and some fairy liquid. It is also dishwasher safe as well as being freezer and refrigerator safe too. It comes with a 10 year guarantee which you probably won't need as my one is years old now and still in perfect condition but it is nice to know that Pryrex is so confident about it that they are willing to offer it.
I bought this roaster because the one that I had at the time was very heavy and bulky and I really struggled when it came to lifting it out of the oven, especially when it had a big chicken or joint of meat in it.
When it came to buying a new roaster, I decided to buy this one from Pyrex. Pyrex products are well known to be good quality and I have been pleased with all of the products that I have bought from this brand over the years.
The first thing that I liked about this roaster was the handles - there's nothing worse than a roaster without handles, trust me! I also liked the cool design of it - it is clear glass, which looks much nicer than the huge black metal one that I'd been using previously.
I particularly like this because I am able to see the food through the glass so I can tell if it is starting to burn at the bottom of it or if it needs turning over, which I find especially handy when I am cooking roast potatoes with a chicken as these often burn easily but I am able to keep an eye on them without having to lift the foil off of the chicken.
The roaster is very solid and well made but it is still easy for me to lift up without struggling and I can easily get hold of the handles when I have oven gloves on. When I am holding it by the handles it feels sturdy and the handles never feel like they might break off or anything like that. Although this is a roaster I also use it to bake cakes in because it Is the perfect size and it is a very versatile item. It can be used to cook anything really - veggie pasta bake is one of my current favourites but I did a lovely fish pie in it a few days ago.
It measure 35cm by 23cm and I am able to fit a lot of food in it - a large chicken fits in it easily as does a large joint of meat. It is very easy to clean and after around five months of me having it and using it very regularly it is still in good condition with no marks, scratches or chips. I bought mine from amazon and I paid £10 for it which at the time did seem a little pricey but it is worth it because of how versatile and how good quality it is.
All in all I give the roaster five out of five stars and I highly recommend it.
Since becoming a mummy, and my daughter now being 3 and more into eating adventurous dishes I have been trying to cook more different dishes (I'm also a tad addicted to watching Barefoot Contessa on the cooking channel!) and so I know I needed to buy some additions to our kitchen essentials. I already have a few pyrex dishes, but for roasting a chicken in I had nothing big enough. I spotted this 35cm by 23cm rectangular roaster on amazon for only £9.49 so using some vouchers into the basket it went!
I love Pyrex dishes as they are uniquely made from Borosilicate Glass giving high thermal shock resistance. This means I can put my chicken/lamb/turkey etc in the oven and the glass will not shatter/break and is ideal for roasting all kinds of dishes. They are good quality, as I have even dropped this on a few occasions and it is really resistant! Once cooled down, I can even leave the chicken in this dish and put it in the fridge overnight so it is really good for all temperatures.
The dish is easy to clean, and I find just some hot water and washing up liquid is enough to give it a good scrub, although for those fortunate it is also perfect to go in a dishwasher so saves some time! My only small niggle is that the other day I was on the phone and accidentally burnt some chicken in this roaster and it took me a good week with some boiling water, a brillo pad and endless scrubbing/soaking to get all the burnt residue off! Around the rim it has started to tinge a brown colour from frequent use where the glass has slightly burnt in our high powered oven but it has not ruined the roaster in any way.
Another good feature is that this roaster is designed with two handles on either side which make for easy gripping the dish when placing and removing from the oven. However, with my oven mitts on sometimes it is not as long as I'd hoped and my thumb accidentally goes into the dish so I can get a solid grip on it without it slipping.
The roaster is also microwave safe, (not that I can fit mine in there!) so that's another bonus. Pyrex products come with a 10 year guarantee which I think is excellent. However, I am not so sure what can go wrong with this dish within 10 years which will allow me to complain about the product. So far it is faultless and does exactly what I need it to do!
Overall I love this roaster, it's big enough to fit my chicken and other meats in for a good roast and is another welcome addition to my pyrex collection! It gets 5 fab stars and I cannot recommend this dish enough!
I will begin this review by saying that I don't know what I would do without my selection of Pyrex. Almost every time I cook I use something from the range - measuring jug, casserole, roasting dish, plate or mixing bowl.
Pyrex is well known for its durability and quality. In fact I have had some of my pieces since I first got married in 1981 - that's how good it is. It is suitable to use in the microwave and can also be put into the dishwasher. I have been to known to fetch mine out of a hot oven and, once the food has been removed, put them into a bowl of cool water with no ill effects.
The only way that I have spoiled any of my Pyrex is by actually dropping it onto a solid floor - being glass it breaks!
The piece that I am reviewing today is my Pyrex Rectangular Roaster. It is made in clear Pyrex with a stain resistant finish and measures 35cm by 23cm and currently costs just £6 in Matalan.
When you buy your roaster it will have a piece of thin cardboard inside it which will give you a bit of information about your Pyrex including a care and cleaning guide. This item also comes with a ten year guarantee.
I have used my roaster for roasting joints, chops, and roast vegetables and also for making lasagne and shepherd's pie. It is easy to use as it has two small integral handles on the two narrower sides of the roaster. This makes it easy to hold as I lift it in and out of the oven.
Once I have finished whatever I am doing with the roaster it is also easy to clean. If it is fairly clean to begin with it just needs a quick wash in the washing up bowl. If it has any food burnt on to it, as it invariably does when I make shepherd's pie, I just leave it to soak in some hot water with Fairy Liquid whilst we eat the meal and then any food and marks just wash off easily.
Once dry the roaster always returns to its original shine and is can be put away ready for the next use.
As with any of my Pyrex I would recommend this roaster without hesitation - as I said at the start I just don't know what I would do without my Pyrex!
"Finding the right dish is half the battle in making delicious roasts so now you can relax with this classic rectangular roaster. Traditionally styled with two wide glass lips it's easy to move in and out of the oven while a depth of 60mm leaves plenty of room for vegetables and meat juices. Distinguished by an azure tint glass this is high quality cook-to-tableware. Heat resistant to 300°C you can use this roaster with confidence in any oven or microwave fridge freezer or dishwasher - while its non-"
