Pyrex Round Pie Dish 1.1 L
Pyrex is a brand name of a toughened glass used in cooking. I personally, have a lot of Pyrex, some bought, some given and quite a lot inherited. I have even managed to break some, not on purpose, but I did seem to go through a phase of dropping items on the floor and not all of it survived.
The appearance is of thick clear glass and according to Wikipedia was first trade-marked in 1915 having been developed by German engineer Otto Schott and is actually called Borosilicate.
Pyrex dishes are safe up to 300 degrees centigrade, wash up well and are great for oven to table use. From a cooks point of view a selection of Pyrex dishes are surely a must have. They are clear glass, quite thick and weighty, with a solid appearance. The dishes clean up well and are dishwasher and scourer proof.
As mentioned some of my Pyrex is old, the pie dish I am reviewing is newer and one I bought myself about 12 years ago, so it is nearly new!
Most weeks the dish is utilised to cook flapjack and I am creating lots of new variations at the moment. I also tend to use this dish mostly for making apple pies, especially this year when we had a bumper crop. I also utilise the dish for turkey and vegetable pie after Christmas and various sweet and savoury pies throughout the year. As well as various crumbles and more recently an oat and nut roast, which was a great success. The pastry cooks well in the dish and if a thicker pastry is used, with care it is possible to get the pie out whole and the edges are nice and evenly baked. Due to the fluted pattern at the top of the dish, it is simple to create nicely crimped pastry and if removing it whole the pie does look professional due to the shape at the top. When making pastry remember to use slightly more ingredients than you would require for a 7" pie dish as this is slightly broader than most, but my results have always been excellent when using this dish.
When you get your Pyrex home, first remove any labels and wash in warm soapy water, then it is just a case of getting on and using them. All items can be used in the oven, under the grill or in the microwave and they are useful for any number of different household uses.
Although not the most glamorous of gifts a Pyrex Pie Dish along with maybe a rectangular dish would make an excellent wedding gift that would last for years or for the cynics out there longer than the marriage in some cases!
My pie dish certainly gets a great deal of use, is easy to grease, easy to dish up from and can go from oven to table without any worries.
If any bits stick to the surface, cleaning is a doddle, I find a good soak will usually dispense of most if not all stuck on food, remaining tougher sticks can easily be removed with any type of scourer. They drip dry or towel dry and tend to come out of a dishwasher if you use one sparkling. Making Pyrex an ideal oven to tableware choice.
What PYREX Say:
"Why is the Pyrex Glass Cookware unique?
Pyrex glass cookware offers a wide range of high quality products, identified by an azur tint glass. Its heat resistance (up to 300°C) allows you to use it safely in the oven and micro-wave. Its non porous and stain resistant features will keep your products hygienic and transparent for a long time. This range is very versatile (fridge, freezer, oven, micro-wave, dishwasher) and is also elegant on the table."
CONCLUSION & STARS:
I would definitely recommend the Pyrex Pie Dish to anyone (or cake dish as called on Dooyoo), they are so versatile and represent excellent value for money due to the quality and they should last for many years and generations. They are tough and robust and despite what I have mentioned before are actually quite difficult to accidently break. I find Pyrex products truly versatile and they are a valued resource in my kitchen. Ideal for family's singles and couples. The dish is flexible in usage to allow your choices to be flexible.
5/5 highly recommended.
PRICE AND AVAILABILITY:
At the time of writing (December 2013) the Pie Dish is £5.19 from Amazon and £5.99 in Argos. Also available from John Lewis, larger Supermarkets and lots of other outlets. Make sure you get the real deal though as I have found any other glass cookware is just not as good.
I hope you found my review helpful and informative?
One of my favourite foods ever is banana cake, I make this quite regularly and I also enjoy baking a variety of other flavoured cakes. Up until a few months back I had been using a square shaped oven dish to cook my cakes in, but then I decided it was about time that I bought a proper cake dish because I was sick of them not cooking properly as it was much too deep. I chose this cake dish mainly because it's from the brand Pyrex.
I already have loads of Pyrex products in my kitchen and they're all really good quality and durable. I paid just under £7 for the cake dish and bought it from amazon. A discount store which is local to me sells cake dishes for 99p each but they're the cheap aluminium ones. I was tempted to buy one of those, however by buying this Pyrex one I knew that it wouldn't need to be replaced after a month or so like the cheap ones no doubt would, and I knew that by spending that bit more I would be investing in a product that will last for years and be good quality.
The cake dish is round which was a novelty for me at first as I was so used to baking square shaped cakes! The edges are fluted and is large enough to make a large cake. There is only one size available as far as I know. It is deep enough to keep cake batter securely in the dish and the dish has got two handles, one on each side which are easy to grasp. I find this much easier and more comfortable to transfer from the kitchen side to the oven than I did with the product that I'd been using to bake cakes in before which is thanks to the handles.
Even when the dish is full to the brim with cake batter the dish doesn't feel too heavy or like the handles are going to break. The material of the dish is glass. The glass is very thick and strong and like all of the other Pyrex products I have this dish feels excellent quality. After a few months of fairly regular use (1-2 times a week usually) this hasn't got any stains p, cracks, chips or visible marks on it.
I use the dish mainly for making cakes but it can also be used to make pies, quiches - almost anything really. I'll admit that I've also used this as an oven tray a couple of times when my proper oven trays were in the wash and I just placed the food in it and it cooked the food fine. It can be used to cook anything really and I have cooked pasta bake in it a couple of times and I am going to do a lasagne in it at some point.
The dish is dishwasher safe which I find really handy, food does stick to the bottom of the dish and it can be stubborn to remove so the dishwasher gets any stubborn bits off. Bits of cake can also stick to the sides of the dish especially if the food/cake has been over cooked and burnt a bit. It takes up almost the whole of the bottom shelf of my dishwasher though.
The dish is also freezer safe and microwaveable safe which I'm sure some people will find handy but I personally haven't put mine in the freezer or microwave. The dish all in all is very good quality and it feels durable and good quality. All of the cakes I've cooked in this dish have turned out fine and I recommend it.
The only downside to it is that it is fairly big so if you have limited kitchen storage space like me it can be a bit awkward to try and fit it in the cupboard. This is the only disadvantage though and it is not actually a fault with the product, it's just that my kitchen is very small.
When it comes to buying cookware for my kitchen I don't mind spending out a decent amount for items I think I am going to use. My Mother always said/says you need the right tools for the job anyway and I happen to agree with that sentiment and because of that I have to admit that I do own alot of Pyrex as I find it all so reliable and all good quality.
This cake dish I bought a long time ago now and I paid about a fiver for it in some supermarket or other though a quick look around online tells me that this is still an item that sells and the cheapest that I have found this to retail at £6.49 from Amazon and as far as I am aware they come in different sizes and mine is the 1.1L option.
Made from clear Borosilicate glass this is a chunky and rather deep dish, with slightly scalloped handles. It is shock resistant and can take a fair amount of knocks and it doesn't retain flavours or stains so even after using this quite a lot over the past 4-5 years it really does appear as good as new thankfully and it does come with a 10 year guarantee against manufacturer defects too....so confident thoese people at Pyrex are eh?!
This is suitable for using in the cooker, in the microwave and it is fridge, freezer and dishwasher safe...it really is fabulous quality and very versatile indeed.
You can of course use it as its meant to be used....to make cakes in though I have made pies in this too and various other things, I've used it in the cooker and in the microwave to reheat things up in and shoved it in my freezer for a good few days and I have to admit that I really do like this and happily use it often!
Recommended from me, its a great item for any cook or chef to own and it doesn't only have to be used for baking in as its versatile so don't let its name put you off adding to your collection!

Pyrex cake dishes are made from glass and are toughened to help them be long lasting and durable. They can withstand extreme hot or cold temperatures and they are fridge, freezer, oven, microwave & dishwasher safe which makes them ideal for pouring desserts in and then cooking them straight from the fridge or freezer and you can just throw them in to the dishwasher after use. Because these are glass no matter what you put in them they will not stain or mark in any way and they do not hold any odours or change colour over time. There are two handles and the edges are fluted for making pastry or similar desserts.
These are currently available from Amazon for around £10.00 but shop around as you will find that these are available far cheaper in stores such as Robert Dyas and I would expect to pay around £5.00 for this cake dish.
I have used this dish for a couple of years now and it still looks brand new. It looks just as good as when it was brand new without any stains or chipping occurring and is extremely hard wearing and can take plenty of knocks without any damage occurring. I think that this is a great addition to cake making or pastry bases desserts whether it's for flans, tarts or just for storing mixture in the fridge. Also, this cake dish will not scratch or chip at all and I'm known for being clumsy but it's lasted my wrath well!
I am rating this dish 5/5 as it does just what I need it to do the handle is a very useful addition for getting it in and out of the oven and just for general ease of use if you want to put this dish straight on to the table.
