Pyrex Classic Basic Bowl 1.0Ltr
Advantages: Durable, versatile
I'm very health concious and eat healthily. As a result, 99.9% of the meals made and consumed in my household are made from scratch as I hate the thought of eating food with added chemicals or unnecessarily large amounts of sugar/salt. One of the main meals that I make is simply a large salad with fish or meat mixed into it, although I do also make various other dishes that need to be put together in a bowl and mixed up to either enchance the flavour (eg salads) or mix them together (eg cakes and sauces). Up until last year I just managed with a large plastic container however earlier this year I decided to buy a few kitchen must-haves with an Amazon voucher and this was one of my purchases - the pyrex 'classic' bowl.
I chose this bowl firstly because it's a Pyrex product, and i've been familiar with this brand for absolutely years. I have found all of their products that I have owned to be long lasting and durable. I also bought it due to how cheap it was - I bought mine from Amazon and paid around the £6 mark which considering the quality I think is reasonable. Places like Ikea, Wilkinsons and supermarkets also sell these and the RRP is £7.49 for a 3.0 litre bowl. There are also other available sizes which are half a litre and 2 litres which I think is a good idea as it will appeal to either small or large families. I opted for the largest option as there are a few people living in my house (mum, siblings etc) as well as regular visitors who often stay to eat. I also often make intentionally large portions and then freeze the remainder as it's a quick and easy meal.
The bowl came with a little green sticker on it with the brand (Pyrex) and product name clearly listed on it. I peeled it off as I didn't see the point of it, but it doesn't take up much space on the bowl, so some people may choose to keep it on - it doesn't matter either way really! The bowl is not very special to look at. Like all of Pyrex's other products it is simply clear glass. I like this as it will not clash with my kitchen decor or with any of my other kitchen appliances. The bowl is large but doesn't take up too much room on my work surface. The bowl is a little awkward to store as there isn't a large amount of storage in my kitchen and it's quite wide, but we sorted it in the end.
The bowl is made of borosilicate glass which is strong, durable and very sturdy. It is thermal shock resistant, stain resistant and does not retain flavours or smells. It's oven proof, dishwasher safe and microwave safe - although I struggle to fit it into my microwave to be honest! The bowl has a wide opening so it's easy to use whisks, hand blenders and so on and it's easy to transfer ingredients into it. I have the 3 litre one and it's really big, I can make a ginormous amount of cake mixture in it which is nice for a change because before I got it I was always limited to how much I could mix in a bowl at once, where as with this I don't worry about it overflowing. Another use I have for it is for washing vegetables - it's very handy.
The bowl is very sturdy and because it's solid, it doesn't move about when I whisk whatever it contains. I have an electric hand blender which has a strong vibration and the bowl doesn't budge. The bowl gets a little heavy when it's full of cake mixture etc but not so heavy that it's uncomfortable/awkward to lift. It's easy to get a grip on it as the rim is slightly raised. However, when lifting it out of the dishwasher it can be a little awkward but even when I dropped it a week or so ago after losing my grip it didn't break - it almost bounced!
This bowl is a little too large to fit into my compact microwave however smaller bowls would be handy for melting butter, chocolate etc or warming up soup and so on. I haven't used it in the oven either although Pyrex state on their website that it can withstand temperatures of 300 degrees. It can also be placed into the freezer as long as it doesn't reach minus 40 degrees. This is a versatile bowl and I really reccomend it - in my opinion this is an essential item to have in the kitchen cupboard if you make a lot of meals from scratch or are an avid baker.
Summary: A great bowl
