“ Brand: Pyrex / Product Type: Casserole „
I have lots of Pyrex in the house and I regularly use it - not just for cooking. The one I use most often is this casserole dish.
Holding 2 litres, this is the dish of choice for preparing casseroles which I often do in the winter especially. I favour it over others we have because it has a nice close fitting lid through which you can easily see how the casserole is doing just by pulling out the oven shelf a little. Also, because it has a lid, it stops your food from drying out. We have had many a nice casserole served straight from this pot plonked on a mat in the centre of the table. The lid has a little raised knob on the centre as well s having the standard lipped ears on the sides so it looks really nice as well as offering you a choice for lid removal.
I have also used it as a tureen, transferring cooked goods from the oven into this warmed dish and then keeping it warm via the lid. Without the lid I have used it to make large fruit trifles and then plonked the lid on to keep the flies off. Of course, Pyrex is so durable it is as at home in the fridge as it is in the oven so it is really versatile. It has been used in the garden to keep a mixed dressed salad fly-free when we are having a barbecue.
A quick soak in the sink and any food residue is easily cleaned off without undue scrubbing. Pyrex is a hit with me. There probably isn't a week when I don't use this dish for something.
It has to be 5 stars.
Pyrex is such a renowned make. I can't even think of another make off the top of my head which makes oven safe dishes and glass. I know there are others out there, but always, the first one I would think of, is pyrex.
Pyrex are makes of oven proof glass, which can also go in the microwave and is dishwasher safe. They make a huge variety of shaped dishes, pudding basins, ramekins, roasting trays and casserole dishes. I often make dishes like casseroles when I have people round and so I wanted something nice and practical for when people came round. The Pyrex elegance caught my eye. It had this rounded casserole dish for around £10 in my local Tesco, it was reduced by a couple of pounds. I have had many pyrex dishes in the past and know they last along time (unless I drop them on my hard tiled floor!) so I wasn't worried about spending the price as I thought (hoped) it would last me a long time.
The dish came in a cardboard box, with quite a classy design on it, it would even make a nice present. The packaging is 100% recyclable which I think is really good. The dish is round, with a flat bottom, which makes it sit securely on the surface, no wobbling here! It has a lid with a lip over the edge which makes it easy to take on and off. This is good as it can be quite dangerous with oven gloves and steam and hot cooking. You could end up smashing the lid on the floor. The lid is has a sort of rounded dome shape, with a small bobble on the top, so you could also lift it off by that.
The casserole dish does a great job in the oven. It cooks dinner safely, without getting damaged. It is also easy to clean, which is the bonus of it being clear glass so you can see it is clean, not like some of the cast iron bits I have, where you can't see if they are clean or not.
To wash this dish I normally leave it to soak in hot soapy water for 15 minutes then put it in the dishwasher. Over time, with many uses, the dish doesn't get discoloured or scratched, so looks as good as new, even though it isn't!!
We've got LOADS of Pyrex cooking stuff in the house but the main thing that gets used is this casserole dish because we all love stews and it's wicked for cooking stuff like chicken breasts in too. The one we use most often is a 2 litre casserole dish but you can get them in smaller and bigger sizes.
The casserole dish is made of glass so you have to be mega careful when you take it out of the oven, sometimes it gets that hot that even a doubled over tea towel isn't enough to stop it burning your fingers a bit. I remember years ago when I was at school my mate touched a glass casserole dish in cooking class, it had just come out of the oven and her fingers actually STUCK to the hot glass so from then on this sort of stuff scares me a bit.
As long as you're careful though you'll get a proper nice stew out of one of these Pyrex casserole. Because of it being glass it conducts the heat good so you don't get any patches of stew that have cooked better because it will all cook through at the same time.
The lid is glass too and so is the knob on the top, that seems a bit stupid actually because the dish gets so majorly hot that I reckon Pyrex should make the knob out of something that won't get so boiling! The lid fits good on top of the dish and doesn't slide off all over the place when you take it out of the oven, it's not a mega tight fit but I suppose that doesn't matter that much when you're cooking stew in the oven.
Another good thing about this casserole dish is that you can put it in the fridge or freezer. We don't do that very often but it's good because just before Xmas I spent all day making a chicken stew and the minute the timer went off on the oven my uncle phoned to invite us all to a party. I didn't want to waste the stew so ended up leaving it to go cold while we was out and then putting the whole thing in the freezer for a few days later! Perfect and it meant we had got a yummy stew all ready made and ready to eat after it had took as many hours to defrost as it did to cook! lol
Recommended... looks wicked and makes it easy for you to create a delish and hearty stew!!!
