Another day, another Pyrex dish to review, sorry!!
Just to make the review a bit more interesting I will add a bit of history about Pyrex that I have found on the internet. Pyrex is a brand name for glassware, introduced by Corning Incorporated in 1915. A Corning executive gave the following account of the etymology of the Pyrex brand name:
"The word PYREX is probably a purely arbitrary word which was devised in 1915 as a trade-mark for products manufactured and sold by Corning Glass Works. While some people have thought that it was made up from the Greek pyr and the Latin rex we have always taken the position that no graduate of Harvard would be guilty of such a classical hybrid. Actually, we had a number of prior trade-marks ending in the letters ex. One of the first commercial products to be sold under the new mark was a pie plate and in the interests of euphonism the letter r was inserted between pie and ex and the whole thing condensed to PYREX."
So, there you go, some interesting history.
This time its time to review my oval casserole dish. Casseroles are so easy to make and a great way of getting my husband and kids to eat their vegetables that I tend to make quite a few during the week. At the moment I have been using those chicken in a bag casseroles where you get a mix with a plastic bag and you just add all the potatoes, vegetables and chicken together, add the spice and bake in the oven for an hour or so. This is great but you do need a dish to make it in as well. Sometimes if you are not careful some of the mixure will spill out of the bag so you want something to cook it in so it does not go all over your oven.
That's where the oval casserole dish comes in handy. It holds 4.5L so is quite big and will fit a whole casserole for a whole family of 4. It comes with a lid which I use if I make my own casserole, not one of the bag casseroles as these always come out better if you cover them up so the sauce and ingredients at the top of the dish do not get burnt or over cooked. The dish as handy handles at the side which makes it easy to hold and get out of the oven. The lid also has these handles so when you do grab onto the dish you get a really sturdy hold and are not afraid that the top will fall off whilst getting it out of the oven.
A cheap, practical dish.
