Black & Decker Cordless Screwdriver
by Vialdana
This is another tool that's landed up in my tool collection rather than my husbands. It was his, but since he bought his latest cordless power drill which doubles up as a screwdriver as well, this has been handed down to me. For this reason, I can't actually tell you what we paid for this, but I can say we've had it for quite a few ... years and it's lasted pretty well, so if you can find one at a good price then it's probably worth going for.
As you've probably gathered from what I've said above, my husband does most of the DIY around our home, but that being said I'm not totally useless and can handle a drill, wire a socket (yes I said socket not plug), and have even tried my hand at plastering when we were doing this place up a few years back - trust me that's not a DIY job it's an art form and all plasterers are artists!
This is quite a handy little power tool, easy to use because there are no leads to get in the way so you don't need to worry about where to plug it in etc. and also really useful when you've got the power switched off while you're doing something too being cordless. It's also not as big or unwealdy as the power drill is to hold so easier for smaller hands or people who struggle with larger power tools, and not too heavy which is good for me as lifting the big power drill up to shoulder height can be a pest of a thing to do.
In terms of how powerful this is - well honestly, not very! I would say this doesn't have anything like the grunt that my husband's power drill does when in use as a screwdriver. It needs charging waaay more often and can do maybe fifty-sixty screws on one charge whereas the drill can do a couple of hundred easily between charges. It's also much slower and packs a lot less punch. Its fine when you've a pre-drilled hole to pop the screw into, but pretty poor if you're trying to direct drive the screw in as it just clutches out and doesn't have the oomph to do the job. This makes it sound like I don't think much of it, but actually I find it a very useful thing to have around, and I don't think it's any worse than most power screwdrivers.
For me, this is a useful tool. It means I can easily re-screw something that's come loose or undo a tight screw by putting this into reverse (check the title if you find it hard to remember which way to go for doing up and undoing). I don't need to wait till my husband is home to borrow his tools or ask him to do it. However, I don't think I'd want to tackle a big job with this as I don't think it would stand up to it well and would probably run out of juice and need charging before I was finished.
In other words this is handy if you want to put a screw in occasionally but wouldn't be suitable if you were using this all the time for work, or even if you were perhaps doing a lot of work doing up a house or something. Read the complete review |
