      Advantages

      Disadvantages

A decent cough syrup from Asda.

Recently I have had the works...! A bad cough, sore chest, sore throat, painful ears, runny nose etc. As we have just got ourselves a mortgage we've got enough outgoings as it is without me spending a fortune on expensive medicines and products. When I needed some cough syrup recently I sent my husband off to Asda to buy me some, as he had to go to a shop next door anyway, and he brought me home this 300ml Asda chesty cough syrup. This syrup comes in a 300ml bottle and costs £2.47 making it fantastic value compared to 100ml of Lemsip chesty cough syrup at £3.69 and 150ml of Benylin mucus cough syrup at £4.27. As money is super important to us for the next few months as we decorate our place and get tenants in it a small saving of money soon adds up.

The cough that I have been suffering from recently is a chesty cough and of course I have had a chest that hurts and feels full of phlegm and other nasties. This is never nice and when I have been having to go to work at the same time it has been important for me to have lots of medicines to hand to try and get me through the working day.

This cough syrup comes provided in a glass bottle with a non child proof cap. Now this isn't a problem for us as our medicine cabinet came complete with a lock on the door in our home so we can keep medicines and cleaning products away from our nieces and nephews when they come to visit. This bottle is brown in colour and nothing about this cough syrup really looks appetising or nice at all, but then I'm not too worried about that as if it tasted like tar I would still drink it if it made me feel better.

This chesty cough syrup states that it is cherry flavoured but when I poured some of this thick gloopy liquid in to my mouth from a 10ml spoon (I took 2) I could not really notice cherry much. This was a plus point for me as I am not really a fan of cherry but you shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth so I didn't moan at my husband. 20ml of this cough syrup was just enough that I was getting sick of the taste and I would say that this doesn't take very nice at all. The consistency of the cough syrup is thick enough that it does not pour everywhere and spill off the spoon right away which is always good as cough syrup gets everywhere sometimes and can be really sticky.

I find that after using 20ml of this cough syrup that I don't need any more for at least 3 or 4 hours. This is much longer than previous cough syrups have lasted and they have often been more money also. This dose is the ideal dose for me as if I just take 10ml in one go I don't find that it makes much difference and I am soon hacking away again in no time. I will use this last thing at night, first thing in the morning then at lunchtime and dinner time and usually this is enough for me. Within a moment or two of using this the taste has gone from my mouth and my throat and chest start to feel softer and more soothed.

Overall I would rate this 4 out of 5 stars. I would like something that tastes a little bit nicer, especially considering that this is clearly quite sugary (there is a warning to avoid if you have a sugar intolerance) but it does work very well. My chest and throat start to feel soothed within just a few minutes and the price of this is very reasonable for its longevity and the effect that it had on me. I would definitely recommend this cough syrup if you are on a budget and it worked very well for me.

      Advantages

      Disadvantages

      Works great

Before christmas everyone in my house had a cough and we all had it for weeks, I ended up getting fed up of being up coughing all night and so when I went into our local Asda store I decided to see what I could get to help me out. The medicine comes in a 300ml bottle and it costs about £2.50 which I don't think is bad value when you compare it to the price of the likes of Benylin.

The medicine comes in a brown bottle which is made of glass, I personally would think plastic would be better to make a bottle of medicine out of incase it is dropped, the top is a white screw top which is childproof. On the front of the bottle there is a label which is white and pink in colour, it has the outline of a body drawn on it in yellow with a white bit in the chest as if to tell you it is for a chesty cough.

      The doseage information is,

For adults and children over 12 1 or 2 5ml spoonfuls to be take,
This medicine can be taken every 2-3 hours,
You must not take more than 4 doses in 24 hours,

When I was using this medicine I took a 5ml spoonful every couple of hours so that I could take 8 doses rather than 4 in 24 hours and get the relief from the medicine more regularily.

      The ingredients are as follows,

Guailenesin 100mg per 5ml, Glucose, Methylhydroxybenzoate E218, Citric Acid, E330, Sodium Citrate E331, Sodium Saccharin E945, Carmoisine Red E122, Caramel E150c, Cherry Flavour, Ethanol and Purified Water.

The medicine isn't great tasting but then I don't think adults medicines generally taste good, the liquid is a deep red - pink in colour and it smells sweet, rthe medicine is quite sticky when you get it on your hands which I always manage as I always overfill the medicine spoon.

This medicine may not taste good and I may get sticky from it but it does the job well so it is worth the bad points, the medicine seems to coat the throat as it goes down and I feel a warming feeling in my chest after taking it. I would say the medicines effects last 3-4 hours so taking it every couple of hours through the day helps to hold off the cough and taking it before bed helps to give you a good nights sleep. I will give the medicine 4 stars as it loses a star for the taste.

I have bought this every time I have had cough, this time it hasn't worked couldn't understand why. but it is because my cough is caused by a virus and it's not for viral infections so had to go get a presciption from Drs and I think because i've always gone for it every time I get a cough its started making me feel nausea. it is not right to keep going back for same as it says on bottle if symptoms persist seek medical attention this I did this time and found I had taken it to no avail.

      Advantages

      Disadvantages

great stuff... shame about the taste.

I am very prone to getting ill in the winter and my biggest problem is chesty coughs. I hate when I am sitting in public and suddenly you hear by ugly, chesty cough and everyone looks at me as if I smoke too much. I had a lot of lung and chest problems when I was younger, and this is what causes me to catch colds and flu way too easily. I am entitled to a free Flu jab because of my chest condition, but I am so scared of needles that I couldn't put myself through it. I normally wouldn't have picked up an own-brand medicine, but I was going through such a hard time financially, I decided to buy a cheap one until I could get to he doctors.

You can buy the medicine in a 300ml bottle for £2 which is very cheap and can last you a whole winter. This is very good considering you can pay up to £5 for a cough medicine and they all do the exact same job anyway so there's no point dishing out for an expensive one when you can just buy a perfectly good own brand. You can take this medicine fairly often, although you can not give it to children under 12 years old.

I took a 5 ml spoonful twice a day when I felt my cough was getting pretty bad. I poured out two table spoonfuls when I took my dose as I don't actually have any measuring spoons in my house. The medicine is easy to pour as it is a brown coca-cola colour medicine and it is a very thick consistency. This means that you don't have to slowly move the spoon to your mouth without wobbling and spilling it everywhere like what happens with come medicines. It isn't a sticky medicine either which means if you do dribble a bit on your skin, t is easy to clean off.

The taste is absolutely vile and it gives you that awful shiver down your back when you take it, making the experience extremely unpleasent. When you first put it in your mouth you can't taste very much, but when you swallow it and it touches the back of your tongue you actually want to shiver and be sick. I always end up taking a huge gulp of coke after taking this medicine as the taste is just unbearable. It is supposed to be a fruity taste, but it isn't it's just a strange, strong, mediciney taste that is hard to explain.

Despite being an awful taste, the medicine really does work. I took this for three days and my chesty cough that I had for three weeks had turned into just tiny little coughs now and then. It felt really great when taking it and you could feel all the mucus being dragged down with it into your stomach, making your throat and chest feel clear again. Once I did cough this back up because I took it at a bad time, but apart from that I've never had an issue and this has helped me get through quite a few good coughs.

I always took it before I went to bed and I managed to sleep through the night without coughing and waking everyone up. I love this medicine and if it wasn't for the awful taste, I would have given it a 5 stat. But unfortunately it's a 4 star for now!

      Advantages

      Disadvantages

      Not recommended.

I recently had a cough - as everyone seems to have at the moment - and I've been going through cough syrup like water! One such cough syrup I've used is Asda Chesty Cough Syrup which has been in my cupboard for a while and I found it one night when I'd run out of the Benilyn I'd been using. The medicine comes in a glass bottle and contains 300mls of the syrup solution. It has a screw cap which is easy to remove and replace, but unfortunately the lid area does get pretty grubby and sticky once you have poured the syrup from it once or twice - although you can hold it under the tap to keep it clean! There are directions on the back of the bottle and also in a leaflet that is inside the box that the bottle comes in. There is a little plastic spoon that comes with the bottle - but I never used this as I used my ordinary household spoons.

The syrup is cherry flavour and tastes fairly pleasant, although it is thick and gloopy. It is not a chore to take it. As per the instructions, I took 10mls (2 teaspoons) ever 3 hours (as needed). In theory, I expected that, as the syrup was thick, it would coat my throat and be soothing, alleviating my symptoms somewhat. I am yet to come across a cough syrup that does anything by "take the edge off', and so I wasn't expecting miracles.

To be honest, I would say that the effects of this cough syrup was minimal, at best. Although it slightly soothed my throat (which was sore), it didn't really suppress my cough at all - and I found myself coughing as much as ever! Like I said, although I didn't expect miracles, I was very disappointed in this product. There were no side effects from taking it (as there was little effect at all). I really cannot recommend this product for use by anyone. Cheap - but pointless.

      Advantages

      Disadvantages

      An excellent cheap cough syrup

Whenever I am suffering from a cold I always end up with a cough to go with it and it always ends up being a chesty one. I think having whooping cough when I was young means I am prone to getting the chesty cough rather than the tickly one. After watching a programme several months ago about medicines and the ingredients in them I learnt that the own brand drugs are just as good, if not batter than the named ones. Therefore I had no problem in buying the Asda own brand cough medicine.

The medicine comes in a 300ml bottle which is made from glass and a very dark brown colour. There is a white screw top on the bottle but this is not child proof. The label on the bottle is a white and deep pink colour and it has the Asda logo and the product name on the front and the directions and warnings on the back.

The medicine is supposed to be cherry flavoured, there is a faint hint of cherry but no where near enough to make this actually taste nice. I know they say what tastes bad is good for you but this really is bad! The dosage for children over 12 years of age and adults is 1-2 5-10ml spoons every 2-3 hours. No more than 4 doses should be taken in every 24 hours. Children under 12 should not take this medicine.

I have found that the stated does is good. I have 2 5ml spoonfuls at one time and I am finding that this dose will last me for about 5 hours and only then am I needing to take more. Hubby has had the same results and he sometimes does not need to take another dose for even longer. I find that this is ideal for taking about half an hour before bed as it means I get a good nights sleep and am not waking up from coughing all of the time.

The medicine is very easy to take, the liquid is a good consistency so very easy to pour but it is not overly runny so it all dribbles off the spoon. The smell is slightly off putting but if you try not to think of this you should be able to take the medicine with ease. I do instantly feel is putting a smooth coating down my throat as it goes down and this does actually feel quite nice for the few seconds it is there before I have to have a drink to get rid of the taste!

The ingredients for the medicine include:-

Guailenesin 100mg per 5ml, Glucose, Methylhydroxybenzoate E218, Citric Acid, E330, Sodium Citrate E331, Sodium Saccharin E945, Carmoisine Red E122, Caramel E150c, Cherry Flavour, Ethanol and Purified Water.

The bottle does contain several warnings and some of these include not giving this to children under 12, not to be used if you have a sugar intolerance or alcohol problem. Pregnant and breast women should seek advise before using. I do strongly recommend that you fully read the back of the bottle if you suffer from any medical condition before using this cough medicine. There can be side effects from using this medicine which may include gastro-intestinal discomfort, nausea or vomiting and if you do suffer from any of these then you should see your doctor.

The bottle does last for a good amount of time and the one which I last bough a few days ago has just under 3 years on the best before date. The medicine is an Asda own brand so it is only available to buy in their store. You can buy this on the shelf and not have to go to the pharmacy. The 300ml bottle will cost you £2 and it currently is the only size they do.

I a happy to give this product the full 5 stars despite the taste. It works extremely well and after only a few minutes of taking it, it means I can get a good nights sleep, and I can just about put up with the taste. A great cheap alternative to the branded named medicines.
