~Rub a dub dub!~
Having had a dreadful cough and cold for almost 2 weeks now I have had to replace some of the health care products I have been using as products become used up. One of the items that I have used and had to discard along the way is my small tub of Bells Vapour Rub which had been lurking at the back of the medicine cabinet for some time until I needed to use it. The tub that the product came in was small and compact yet easy enough to hold in one hand whilst taking off the lid with the other when wanting to use it. The lid had a neat twist on and off action that is simple to get to grips with and I found that it closed down with ease when I had finished using the product.
The product has a similar consistency to that of other vaporub products I have bought and it does have the ability to ease congestion and help breathing problems when you have a cough or cold. When in use care should be taken as this can sting the skin around the eyes and nose and it should be used with care at all times. I have found that if applying this as a chest rub it can stain clothing, as it has a oily greasy feel that when used too thickly will mark anything that is in close contact with it. This is something I have found with all these type of products, which is why my preferred way to use this is as an inhalation mixed into hot water which gives off plenty of soothing steamy vapors.
The tub/ jar that the product came in had a smooth finish that was easy to handle with a paper label that carried details about the product which were easy to understand and read. The colours used on the label made the presentation look neat and minimal with them giving the product a slight budget look. The expiry date for the product was neatly displayed on the side which made it easy to see when the product was ending its usable life span and I found the contents of the tub had a very similar fragrance and consistency to that of other similar products I have bought. The tub was easy to open and close when wanted and just as easy to store away after use.
~Ease of use~
The mix of ingredients within the product gives off a good vapor action when in use and I found that the best way to get the most from this product was to use it as an inhalation mix that could be placed into hot water and used to help clear the airways when wanted. I found that doing this once a day has been of some help in keeping my airways as clear as they can be bearing in mind that fact that I have had a very nasty cold type illness. I have found that when using the vapors to help clear my blocked nose the combination of the steam and the ingredients within the product have been of help to ease my symptoms with them being easy and quick to use when needed.
The product has a mix of menthol, camphor and eucalyptus oil in it which all help to ease a congested chest and nose when used with care and whilst I used up the remainder of the tub I had as described, I know it can be of use as a chest or muscle rub when needed and I have found it gives similarly good results. The downside to this and many similar products is the fact that it can sting the eyes if it comes into contact with them, so care should be taken when using it and I find the best way to apply it as a chest rub is to place some onto a clean tissue and use that to apply it to the skin rather than by using my hands.
~Price and rating~
The cost of a small 50g tube of Bells vapour Rub is rather good and the last time I bought some it cost me just £1 to buy with it having been in use for a few months which I feel is good value for the amount of use it has given during that time. I found the product helped to ease breathing and open the airways a little when it was in use and the combination of ingredients worked well with no ill effects that I noticed. If I compare this product to Vicks Vaporub I do feel that the Vicks product wins in terms of its fragrance and effect in use, although the price is far higher than the Bells version. The Bells product is a good stand by if you are on a budget and want to cut costs as if does work as it should and offers a good substitute for more expensive branded products. As such my rating for this product is 4 stars.
Summary: Works well
