      Advantages

      Disadvantages

I will continue to buy this particular cough linctus

I hate coughing, drives me mad and the rest of the household (I get no sympathy in this house) so need a good cough mixture. I don't buy anything that just soothes I always go for cough medicines that have an active ingredient, rather than just a soother.

I mostly go for Boots as find them to be helpful. I ask for the cheapest and am always recommended to buy their own brand goods.

I like Boots cough suppressant Pholcodine which I am pleased with therefore I was more than happy to purchase it's opposite- cough expectorant. Not cheap though I think I paid around £3 the last time I bought it and now on their web-site it's £3.50 for only 150ml. This is available behind the counter.

Unlike Pholcodine this comes boxed. It's a grey box with a red bloke on the front, it says it's 'Nirolex Chesty Cough Relief linctus', also that it's 'Non drowsy, Soothes and relieves chesty coughs'. The bottle is small, plastic and has a tricky lid. The cough mixture itself tastes alright and has a nice consistency.

It comes with the usual info- directions, dosage, ingredients etc

Active ingredient: (per 5ml of) Guaifenesin 100mg.
contains: purified water, liquid sugar (sucrose), glycerol (E422), citric acid, sodium citrate, hyetellose, potassium sorbate (E202), acesulfame potaaium, flavours (cream, blackcurrent, menthol)

Boots Chesty Cough Linctus contains Guaifenesin which is an expectorant medicine, which loosens and relieves phlegm on the chest. This particular cough mixture is just the Chesty Cough, there is one available with added decongestant but I'm yet to try that version.

      How to Use

Adults and children over 12 are to take two 5ml spoonfuls every 4 hours, up to 4 times a day, and should be swallowed.

      My experience:

There's nothing worse than a congested chest, you can tell the difference between this type of cough and a dry cough because a dry cough is just that dry- nothing comes up, it doesn't feel better after a good cough and it's tickly. However a chesty cough is different I actually get breathless with this type, I feel like I'm trying to cough something up, rather than just a horrible hacking. Obviously stuff (phlegm) does come up but not easily or quickly. Taking this medicine definitely helps with this, straight away the syrup itself soothes my throat and gives me a cough break. I am always wary about taking expectorants as I fear they might make me cough more, but it doesn't increase coughing. It helps lessen a cough I suppose because it helps bring stuff up by loosening it without the need to cough so hard. It definitely loosens a tight congested chest, within days of taking it I feel much better. I don't go around coughing up phlegm everywhere, what it seems to do is thin and clear it- probably most of it gets swallowed (I know).

I would definitely recommend this for wet coughs.

      Disadvantages

A very good product by boots, worth a try if your not very well :)

I have recently been suffering from a cold, this then turned into a full blown cough, soar throat and congested nose! I hate being under the weather, I'm a really active person and when I feel rubbish I tend to be grumpy and a pain to be around (according to my mum and girl friend). I went to town to get some cough mixture and I was advised by a lovely lady behind the counter at boots to try this stuff.

      Price/packaging:

I only paid £3.25 for this which was good value compared to other branded mixtures. I was told that this was just as good. You receive a 120 ml bottle. The bottle comes in a cardboard box with information about the mixture, you can only buy this from behind the counter, you must also answer questions such as - are you taking any other medicines, and I this for your own use. It's easy to get and no fuss. The bottle is a hard plastic and it comes with a safety lid that you must press down and then turn, this is to stop children from having access. I like this feature as you can feel save about leaving it alround the house.

      Instructions:

You are told that you are allowed two 5ml tea spoons up to 4 times a day if you are over the age of 12. If you are from the ages of 6-11 you can have one 5ml tea spoon 3 times a day. You can't use this if you are under the age of 6. You must also not store this in temperatures that exceed 30 degrees! Do not leave it on a window sill or in direct sunlight. You are also told that this relieve chesty coughs and starts to de congest the areas that are effected. Overall it's a good set of instructions that are clear to see and follow.

      Did it work?:

It worked really well on me! I took the recommended doses that I was told and I felt my cough start to go. It didn't take long. I found that after a few mins you felt a bit better. It also worked well as a decongestant and it started to clear away. I only used it for 5 days and my cold slowly went away. It has a strange taste that isn't to nicest, if giving to kids you may find that hate it and spit it out. It has that typical medicine taste that I hate. I'm not too bothered about taste though, I just want the dam cold to go. If you spill any of this then it will cause some stickiness which is hard to get rid of! I got it on my desk and it took forever to get off. It worked better than things I have tried before. Its not too cheap though, it's similar price to others on the shelf.

      Overall:

I found that this worked for me, it didn't take too long after using this for my symptoms to subside. I have a lot left in the bottle so it will come in handy for the next cold I get. I am pleased with this and it gets 5 stars from me. I would recommend this to anyone with a cough and cold, adults would prefer this buy kids may like it. It's the best stuff I have tried for a while.

Thanks for reading my review, hope it helped you out! Josh.

      Good cough & congestion reliever

If you're suffering from a chesty cough and congestion and take a trip to Boots chances are you'll end up with this product!

Part of their own range, it is an all in one cough medicine and decongestant and costs £3.05.

There are loads of similar products on the market but we went for this based on price and that being a liquid, the medicine is absorbed more quickly into your body than by tablets.

The packaging is very good and the instructions on taking the medicine (How much to take, how often. how long for etc) are very clear. Like many decongestants the product is not suitable for people with certain pre-existing medical problems such as high blood pressure.

The medicine is bright red and it's got to be said that it doesn't really taste very nice at all - it tastes quite strong and isn't sweet-tasting like some other cough medicines are. As my Nan would say "It tastes like it's going to do you some good"!

If you get over the initial phase of a cold (sneezing, aches and pains etc) and are left with a chesty cough and congestion I think this medicine is worth a go.
