This is not a subject I would normally talk about but, forgive me if you are eating whilst reading this, I had a lot of horrible thick catarrh over the weekend so went to choose something over-the-counter rather than take up my doctor's time.
After hunting around for a something to clear it I found this Covonia product at our local chemist for £2.50 for 100ml which seemed pretty good value compared to other makes. It comes boxed and has a clear, easy to read leaflet which tells me I only need a 5ml spoon 3 times per day. I am also told the ingredients, the fact that it is not suitable for children and that it is non-drowsy.
The mixture itself is easy to measure out because it is fairly thick but I find the bottle needs a VERY good shake before use. The liquid is brown and it reminded me of my childhood - I think the smell is very distinctive but could not put my finger on what it was - on reading the ingredients I think it is the burdock (always loved dandelion & burdock drinks!)
It is not unpleasant, in fact I rather like the taste even though it is medicinal, and did not dread taking my 3 x times per day dose. I made the mistake of eating straight after taking my first spoonful but I would advise waiting to have food or coffee etc a while after dosing because the taste is quite strong and lasts a while interfering with the taste buds.
It is well protected from children because it has a screw top which keeps the liquid fresh and there is none of that stickiness around the top which I have noticed with other similar products which is good.
My catarrh is all but cleared up now thank goodness which is why I am recommending giving this Covonia a try because it does what it says - brings relief from catarrh.
5 stars from me for efficacy, packaging, price and taste.
I bought some of this Covonia Catarrh Reflief Formula the other day as I had had blocked sinuses and my ear kept popping all the time and feeling blocked up inside my head.
I looked on the shelves to see what there was on offer for this kind of thing and saw this bottle and immediately the name made me think of that advert they have on the telly where the bloke sings out the name. I think I bought it in Wilkinson but I can't remember how much it was in there, but they sell it in Tesco and at the moment it is £3.18 a bottle as its on offer but it is usally £3.88.
On the box it says it is a rapid impact effective relief for nasal and throat catarrh and that it is Non Drowsy. On one side of the box it has braille so that people with sight difficulties can tell what the medicine is for as well.
Adults and the elderly can take one 5 ml spoonful up to three times a day and if you want to give it to children over 12 then they can have it once in the morning and once in the evening. You shouldn't give it to under 12's though as it is not suitable unless told to do so by your doctor.
The active ingredients in the mixture are liquid bone set (sounds disgusting), liquid extract blue flag, liquid extract burdock root, and liquid extract hyssop.
The mixture smells like I remember our doctors used to smell like years ago when I was a kid, it is a nice smell like most cough medicines smell of but I don't know which of the ingredients give you this smell or whether it is a combination of them all together. The liquid is quite thick and tastes quite sweet when you take it plus it has a warmth about it that makes you feel like it is working straight away. It does leave quite an after taste on your tongue for quite a while after but it is not a bad taste, just mediciney.
I found that taking this for 3 or 4 days did help and I started to feel a lot better. Whether this was due to the medicine or whether it was just clearing it self up I don't know but it did seem to help especially at night when going to bed, it seemed to make me sleep better.
I would recommend you to try this out if you feel you are blocked up and see if it works for you.

I had a horrible cold over Christmas and it has left me with nose and throat catarrh - not a nice subject I know so I won't go into details as I am sure everyone knows how unpleasant it can be.
I am not a great advocate of cough mixtures and cold remedies as I am of the opinion that they are usually more palliative than cures. However, on this occasion I had tried all my usual home remedies - honey and lemon, inhaling with Vicks and Obas Oil and in desperation went into Boots for some inspiration and, hopefully, relief.
I picked on the Covonia Catarrh Relief Formula because it seemed to be for exactly the problem I had, nose and throat catarrh. A lot of the other medications were more for coughs and I didn't really have a cough. I have also heard other people say good things about Covonia so I picked it up to read a bit more about it.
It comes in a glass 100ml bottle without a child proof cap (not a problem for me as I do not have young children) and costs around £3.50. The bottle is inside a box which is mainly red and green and clearly states that it is a non drowsy formula. I did nearly put it back on the shelf at this point as if I take anything "non drowsy" no matter what time of day, I can't sleep at night. I guess I must be over sensitive to the ingredient that makes it "non drowsy". However, on closer inspection I founds that the reason this particular medication does not make you drowsy is because it contain herbal ingredients and whilst some herbal medicines can make you sleepy this medicine doesn't contain any of those!
So having sorted that one out I had a closer look at the leaflet inside the box. The medicine contains extracts of boneset, blue flag, burdock root and hyssop herbs. Boneset and hyssop are specific anti-catarrh herbs, drying up the catarrh and nasal secretions.
The medicine does contain 11.5% volume ethanol (alcohol) ie up to 453mg per does which is equivalent o 12ml beer or 5ml wine per 5ml dose. Whilst this isn't a problem to most peoplei t is advised that it should be taken into account by those suffering from alcoholism, and children and high risk groups such as patients with liver disease or epilepsy.
After a bit of deliberation I decided to buy this medicine and give it a try.
**The Taste & Dosage**
The medicine is a dark brown colour and is one of those things that initially tastes disgusting but once the first dose goes down it isn't so bad. It is quite strong and as it slides down it warms and soothes the throat which is quite a nice feeling. The does for adults is one 5ml spoonful three times a day, children over 12 years one 5ml spoonful morning and evening and shouldn't be given to children under 12 unless advised by a Doctor. The warm soothing feeling doesn't last all that long, possible 15 minutes maximum but it is nice while it lasts.
I took this medicine as directed for a week and felt that my catarrh was improving, there seemed to be less of it in my throat which had been the most annoying bit. I stopped taking it after 10 days because I felt I had improved sufficiently, however, within a couple of days I was back to square one. I was really disappointed by this but started taking the medicine again. However, every time I stop the symptoms begin again and I feel that it isn't really clearing up my problem just making me feel better while I take the medicine and obviously I can't take it forever!
I decided to pop into the local chemist and spoke to the pharmacist and he recommended good old steam inhalation but to continue with it for some time, I think I had given up too quickly before. I was quite impressed as he could have sold me another medication at more cost to myself.
Overall, this medicine is good at improving the symptoms while you take it but, in my experience, didn't clear up the catarrh as it had suggested on the packaging. A bit disappointing after a good start.
